Linux kernel 5.16 was released upstream on 10 January 2022. Its notable changes included the futex_waitv system call, memory folios, hardware enablement for newer Intel and AMD platforms, Raspberry Pi Compute Module 4 support, and Btrfs updates. These are selected highlights—not features guaranteed to be enabled on every device or included in every distribution’s kernel.

When Linux 5.16 came out—and what “release” means

The Linux Kernel Archives date the initial 5.16 source tarball to 10 January 2022. The archive also lists stable maintenance releases through Linux 5.16.20, dated 13 April 2022, while Linux 5.17 is dated 21 March 2022. These dates distinguish the initial mainline release from subsequent fixes in the 5.16 series. See the Linux 5.x archive.

Linux 5.16 was an upstream kernel release, not a promise that every distribution would ship an identical kernel. Distribution kernels may include their own suffixes, patches, configuration choices, and support policies. The kernel release FAQ says that a version string with text after a dash can indicate a distribution kernel; users who rely on a distribution-provided kernel should contact that distribution’s support channel rather than treating the upstream version number as the whole story. Read the kernel release FAQ.

The FAQ describes a typical development rhythm of a two-week merge window followed by about seven weeks of bug fixing and stabilization, generally with weekly release candidates. It estimates roughly nine to ten weeks between mainline releases; this is a typical cadence, not a fixed schedule for every release.

What were the main changes in Linux 5.16?

Futex waiting for gaming and other applications

Linux 5.16 added futex_waitv, a system call that allows software to wait on multiple futexes. Contemporary coverage discussed its potential usefulness to Windows game compatibility layers such as Wine and Steam Play. It is an application-facing capability: a game or compatibility layer must make use of it. Its presence does not guarantee faster gaming or a system-wide performance increase. See contemporaneous Linux 5.16 feature coverage.

Memory folios

Memory folios entered the mainline kernel in 5.16 as a memory-management building block. Their introduction is a kernel-internals change, not evidence of a universal speedup; any practical impact depends on how software and kernel subsystems use them.

CPU, graphics, and Apple Silicon enablement

The release’s hardware work included Intel AMX support associated with Sapphire Rapids, graphics changes involving Intel Alder Lake and DG2/Alchemist, and additional enablement for AMD Ryzen 6000 mobile processors. Work on Apple Silicon also continued. These are enablement milestones, not guarantees that a particular component will work out of the box: applicability depends on the exact hardware, firmware, kernel configuration, and distribution packaging.

Raspberry Pi Compute Module 4

Contemporaneous coverage identified mainline support for the Raspberry Pi Compute Module 4. That specific upstream support should not be read as a statement about which kernel version, configuration, or defaults are present in Raspberry Pi OS.

Zstd and other hardware work

The release overview also noted a newer Zstd implementation and other hardware improvements. These are pointers to areas of kernel development, not proof of a particular compression, speed, or compatibility outcome on every system.

What changed for Btrfs users?

Btrfs’s kernel-version notes describe several 5.16 changes in filesystem behavior and internals. The work continued subpage support, including making defragmentation and compression writes work; added zoned namespace support; and adjusted zoned allocation and reclaim, filesystem logging paths, and error handling. See Btrfs changes by kernel version.

The Btrfs project’s 5.16 notes report sample results of 3% higher throughput and 11% lower latency on a sample dbench workload for small-inode logging improvements. They also report bulk-creation runtime reduced by 4% and deletion time by 12% for bulk insertion changes. These are results attached to the project’s described changes and workloads, not guarantees for other filesystems, machines, or Btrfs workloads.

Who was most likely to notice Linux 5.16?

  • Game and compatibility-layer developers: futex_waitv matters when software is written or updated to use multi-futex waiting; merely installing a kernel that includes the call does not change every game.
  • Hardware owners: the Intel, AMD, Apple Silicon, and Compute Module 4 work is relevant only when the specific device and its software stack support the corresponding enablement.
  • Btrfs users: the filesystem updates concern particular Btrfs features and workloads. The sample benchmark figures should not be generalized beyond their stated context.
  • Administrators and distribution users: whether 5.16 is available, supported, or appropriate depends on the distribution’s kernel packaging and support policy.

Should you upgrade to Linux 5.16 now?

Linux 5.16 is a historical kernel series, not a current-version recommendation. The archive records later mainline series and ends the 5.16 stable updates at 5.16.20 in April 2022. If you are considering a kernel change today, use the kernel supported by your distribution and its upgrade guidance; the upstream 5.16 feature list alone cannot determine whether another kernel is suitable for your hardware or workload. The versioned Linux 5.16 documentation remains available for reference.
