The Linux Foundation Cloud Engineer Bootcamp was an online training-and-certification pathway announced in 2020 for people beginning a cloud career. Its documented curriculum started with Linux administration and progressed through DevOps, containers, and Kubernetes. That description is historical: available sources do not confirm whether the beginner bootcamp is currently open or what it costs or includes today.
What was the Cloud Engineer Bootcamp?
The Cloud Native Computing Foundation and The Linux Foundation announced the program on June 3, 2020, as a structured route from foundational Linux skills toward cloud-native tools and practices. The launch announcement described a bundle of online courses and certification exams, rather than a scheduled, classroom-based course. CNCF’s launch announcement is the primary source for its original design.
What did the historical curriculum cover?
The five listed courses moved from Linux administration into networking, containers, delivery practices, and Kubernetes:
- Essentials of Linux System Administration (LFS201)
- Linux Networking and Administration (LFS211)
- Containers Fundamentals (LFS253)
- DevOps and SRE Fundamentals: Implementing Continuous Delivery (LFS261)
- Kubernetes Fundamentals (LFS258)
The 2020 announcement also listed the Linux Foundation Certified System Administrator (LFCS) and Certified Kubernetes Administrator (CKA) exams. A Linux Foundation badge record on Credly describes self-paced coursework and the LFCS and CKA exams. These sources document the program at that time; they do not establish that a current offering has the same courses or exam inclusions.

How much time did it take?
At launch, CNCF said participants could complete the program in about six months by studying 15–20 hours per week. That was a launch-era estimate, not a guaranteed completion time or a current workload commitment. The announcement also described an online learner forum and weekday video office hours with instructors; those are historical support details, not a promise about current services.
Was it self-paced, or did learners need to attend a class?
A September 2023 reply from the Linux Foundation team in its forum discussion “New to here” told an enrolled learner that courses and exams were asynchronous and directed them to the Logistics course for office-hour information. This supports a self-paced, asynchronous description of the learner experience, with logistics available in the learner area; it does not verify the current program’s schedule or support arrangements.
How did the beginner bootcamp differ from the advanced option?
In a March 2022 article, The Linux Foundation described the Cloud Engineer Bootcamp as suitable for “complete newbies” and distinguished it from an Advanced Cloud Engineer Bootcamp for IT professionals with experience outside cloud. Its cloud-skills guidance also pointed readers to a cloud career roadmap and free introductory courses as ways to explore the field before committing to structured training.
The advanced bootcamp was a separate program. Its July 2020 announcement described six courses on containers, Kubernetes, service mesh, monitoring, logging, and Helm, plus the CKA exam, with 12 months of access and a $999 standard fee at that time. Those are launch-era details for the advanced program, not terms for the beginner bootcamp and not current pricing. See The Linux Foundation’s announcement of the advanced bootcamp.

Is the bootcamp available now, and what should you verify?
The sources cited here do not establish whether the beginner bootcamp is currently open for enrollment, its current price, curriculum, exam attempts, access duration, or support terms. Before buying, confirm those details directly with The Linux Foundation. In particular, check whether LFCS and CKA exam attempts are included, whether retakes are covered, how long course and exam access lasts, whether instruction is asynchronous, what support is offered, and what weekly study commitment the current program recommends.
If you are comparing it with another training route, assess the assumed Linux and IT background, topic coverage, included certifications and retake terms, teaching format, access window, current total price, and realistic weekly workload. Historical launch details alone cannot establish current value or employment outcomes.
