The Linux Foundation announced the Jupyter Foundation on November 19, 2024, at its Member Summit in Napa, California; the Linux Foundation’s announcement article was published on November 21. The new Foundation gives organizations a way to fund and provide sustaining engineering for Project Jupyter. It manages funding and Foundation resources—not Project Jupyter’s technical decisions.

What the Jupyter Foundation is for

The Jupyter Foundation is a directed fund of the Linux Foundation 501(c)(6). Its purpose is to raise, budget, and spend resources in support of Project Jupyter and its mission. The Linux Foundation described the initiative as a way for organizations to support sustaining engineering and the project’s continued, vendor-neutral technical advancement. Project Jupyter’s governance page explains the Foundation’s role; the November 21, 2024 announcement describes the launch purpose.

Project Jupyter creates open-source software and standards for interactive computing, data science, and research. The announcement said possible support areas under consideration included engineering, release management, community management, documentation, accessibility, marketing, and events. That wording described potential areas, not a commitment that each would receive funding. The Foundation’s About page identifies security, accessibility, release management, documentation, and broad participation among its support priorities. Jupyter Foundation: About.

Does the Foundation control Project Jupyter?

No. The Foundation’s board governs the Foundation’s resources; Project Jupyter’s technical governance is separately described. The Foundation Governing Board controls those resources, approves an annual budget, and approves changes to the Foundation charter. Its composition includes all Project Jupyter Executive Council members, one representative from each Premier member, and between one and three representatives collectively for General members. Project Jupyter Governance.

#1 Best Overall

Project Jupyter says its Executive Council is ultimately responsible for all dimensions of the project, while its Software Steering Council has jurisdiction over software decisions across projects. The Foundation’s own About page states that joining does not give members influence over the technical projects. Membership or a board seat in the Foundation therefore should not be read as authority over project code or technical direction. Project Jupyter: About Us; Jupyter Foundation: About.

Who joined at launch—and how the roster has changed

The Linux Foundation’s November 2024 announcement named these launch members:

Launch category Organizations named in November 2024
Premier AWS, Google, Meta, Bloomberg
General Anaconda, Quansight, QuantStack
Associate MD Anderson Cancer Center

This is the launch roster, not a claim about current membership. The Foundation’s member directory lists a later roster that includes AWS, Apple, Bloomberg, Google, Meta, Snowflake, and Uber as Premier members, and Anaconda, Databricks, JetBrains, and OpenTeams among General members. Membership options and published fees

The Foundation’s Join page describes three organizational membership categories. The terms below are those published on that page and can change; confirm the current schedule and eligibility directly before making a decision. The page also says organizations need at least Silver Linux Foundation membership and distinguishes Foundation fees for organizations already in the Linux Foundation from those that are not.

What the launch statements said

The launch release presented the Foundation as a long-term sustainability measure. Jim Zemlin, Executive Director of the Linux Foundation, said, “The Jupyter Foundation is a critical step forward in ensuring the long-term sustainability of this transformative open-source ecosystem.” This is the Linux Foundation’s characterization of its initiative, rather than an independent evaluation.

Brian Granger, Senior Principal Technologist at AWS and Co-Founder of Project Jupyter, said, “Over the past decade, Project Jupyter has thrived thanks to its vibrant, innovative, and welcoming community of contributors and users, making it critical infrastructure for data science, AI/ML, computational science, and education.” He also said, “We are proud to support the Jupyter Foundation and are committed to its mission.” Amin Vahdat, Vice President of ML, Systems, and Cloud AI at Google, said, “Jupyter is essential to the AI development ecosystem and has helped millions of people in the fields of data science and machine learning.” These are statements in the launch release, not independently verified usage measurements. What this means for Jupyter users

The Foundation is an organizational funding and resource mechanism, not a new Jupyter application, paid software edition, or change to the project’s technical governance. Project Jupyter says its software is free to use under a modified BSD license. The intended benefit for users is indirect: sustained support can help maintain the software and standards ecosystem, but the announcement does not specify that every listed potential support area has already received funding.
