The right Linux certification path depends on what you want to administer: choose RHCSA for Red Hat Enterprise Linux, LFCS for practical vendor-neutral administration, LPIC-1 for administration skills common across distributions, or Linux Essentials for an introduction to Linux and open source. Start with the credential owner’s current objectives, then build hands-on practice around them.
Which Linux certification should you get?
These credentials serve different starting points and goals. Their providers describe scope and training, but the available information does not establish a reliable ranking of employer preference, salary impact, or job outcomes. Match the credential to the systems and duties relevant to your intended work.
| Credential | Best suited to | Scope | Starting point |
|---|---|---|---|
| Linux Foundation Certified System Administrator (LFCS) | Learners seeking practical Linux system-administration skills without a single-distribution focus. | Vendor-neutral administration; the Linux Foundation describes its certifications as hands-on. LFCS overview | Administration-level preparation; the provider’s suggested curriculum begins with introductory courses, which are not prerequisites. |
| Red Hat Certified System Administrator (RHCSA) | Learners whose goals involve Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL). | Red Hat-specific system administration. Red Hat says EX200 validates foundational administration skills across its products. Red Hat training and certification | Red Hat’s official sequence includes an introductory overview before administration courses. |
| Linux Essentials | People new to Linux and open source who want foundational coverage. | Linux and open-source context, plus basic Linux use. LPI Linux Essentials | Beginner level; the cited objectives say no prior certification is required. Check the current objective version before relying on exam details. |
| LPIC-1 | Learners pursuing broader Linux administration skills across distributions. | Distribution-common professional Linux skills; the cited version 5.0 objectives require both exams 101 and 102. LPI LPIC-1 | Administration level; check the current objective revision before planning study. |
Choose by distribution and work
If the role you are targeting centers on RHEL, RHCSA aligns directly with that environment. For cross-distribution administration, compare LFCS and LPIC-1 against their current objectives and the tasks you expect to perform. Linux Essentials is a foundation rather than a substitute for an administration credential.
Choose by learning style
The Linux Foundation characterizes LFCS as hands-on. The sources cited here do not provide enough current, verified detail to compare every exam’s format, permitted resources, or delivery rules side by side, so do not assume the exams work alike. Review each credential owner’s current candidate instructions before booking.

How to prepare for a Linux certification
Use the current exam objectives as your checklist. Build practical command-line ability alongside the theory; a course or book can organize study, but it cannot replace doing administration tasks in a lab.
- Assess your baseline. Check whether you can use the shell, navigate files, manage permissions and users, inspect processes, install packages, configure networking and storage, and manage services. Use the chosen credential’s current objectives to identify gaps.
- Set up a practice environment. Use a virtual machine or another suitable Linux lab. This is general study advice, not a requirement stated by the credential providers. Practice tasks repeatedly so you can complete them without relying on step-by-step instructions.
- Follow a credential-specific path. Use the official sequence and materials relevant to your target, described below.
- Check alignment before booking. Confirm the live exam code, objectives, delivery rules, scoring, allowed resources, price, regional availability, and any validity or renewal policy on the credential owner’s site.
Official learning paths and materials
Linux Foundation: LFCS
The Linux Foundation’s official LFCS learning path recommends starting with courses including Introduction to Linux (LFS101) and Introduction to DevOps and Site Reliability Engineering (LFS162), with additional introductory courses in its suggested curriculum. It lists LFS207 or LFS307 administration training as optional preparation; the courses are not prerequisites. The Foundation’s 2024 curriculum PDF estimates three to six months of preparation depending on experience. Treat that as its estimate for this curriculum, not a guarantee or a general timeline for other certifications. Read the LFCS curriculum PDF.

The candidate instructions retrieved in 2026 state that 67% or above is required to pass and describe PSI Bridge online proctoring. These are changeable exam details: verify the current candidate page before booking. Check LFCS certification information.
Red Hat: RHCSA
For learners new to Linux, Red Hat’s stated sequence is Red Hat Enterprise Linux Technical Overview (RH024), Red Hat System Administration I (RH124), Red Hat System Administration II (RH134), then the RHCSA exam (EX200). Review the Red Hat RHCSA training information for current course and exam details. Formal courses provide structure; whether they fit your needs depends on your experience, study preferences, and budget.

A book or other independent study guide may be useful as an optional supplement, but check its edition against current EX200 objectives. A particular guide’s current edition and availability are not established here, and buying a book is not a stated exam requirement.
LPI: Linux Essentials and LPIC-1
Use LPI’s Linux Essentials objectives or LPIC-1 objectives to focus study. LPI also describes free learning materials consisting of lessons, assignments, and answer guides: LPI learning materials. Make sure the material’s version matches the objectives for the exam you plan to take.
Version-specific figures need particular care: the retrieved Linux Essentials version 1.6 objectives describe exam 010 as 40 questions in 60 minutes, while version 2.0 objectives also appeared in search results. Do not treat the version 1.6 figures as current exam specifications without confirming the live exam details.
