The kernel is the core component; a Linux distribution packages it with the other software needed to make a usable system. By the 25th anniversary discussed in 2016, Linux’s significance extended beyond desktop computers into collaborative development, distribution providers, companies, foundations, and projects building shared infrastructure.
What does “Linux” mean?
In everyday conversation, “Linux” can mean a complete operating system, but technically it is the kernel: the core software that manages hardware and provides services to applications. The kernel alone is not a complete system to install. The Linux Kernel Organization directs new users to obtain a Linux distribution, which combines the kernel with other components into a usable system. Distributions may be general-purpose or tailored to particular uses. The Linux Kernel Organization’s FAQ explains this distinction.
Kernel and distribution
A kernel revision can be incorporated into many distributions. Distribution providers select and package software, and they are responsible for the customer-facing experience. That is why two products described as Linux systems can present different tools and workflows even though both use the Linux kernel. Eric Knorr made this point in his InfoWorld feature published August 22, 2016.
Why the 25th anniversary was a milestone for collaboration
The 2016 anniversary framed Linux not as the work of a single author after its beginnings, but as a continuing collaborative development project. In its 2016 release of a report covering development through kernel 4.7, the Linux Foundation said that more than 13,500 developers from over 1,300 companies had contributed since detailed tracking began with Git. These are cumulative historical figures reported in 2016, not current participation totals. The Linux Foundation’s report announcement describes the study and its scope.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That release also reported an average of 7.8 accepted changes per hour, or 187 per day, during the period studied, with kernel releases spaced 63 or 70 days apart. It reported that unpaid developers accounted for 7.7% of contributions, compared with 11.8% in 2014. Those measurements describe the report period; they should not be read as a present-day snapshot.
Jim Zemlin, then executive director of the Linux Foundation, said in the 2016 release: “Even after 25 years, Linux still serves as an example of how collaborative development can work, which can be applied to other open source projects.” The anniversary feature’s broader point was that this model involved more than the kernel’s code: companies employed contributors and supplied code, distribution makers delivered systems to users, and supporting organizations helped projects coordinate and grow.

What makes Linux an ecosystem?
The ecosystem is a set of connected roles and projects, not a synonym for one operating system package. The 2016 InfoWorld article used several examples to show how those layers fit together:
- The kernel: the core project, developed through contributions from individuals and companies.
- Development tools: Git, created by Linus Torvalds to manage software development, was part of the tooling around collaborative work.
- Distributions: providers integrate the kernel and other software into systems, then take responsibility for the user or customer experience.
- Companies and foundations: organizations can employ developers, contribute code, fund work, or support collaboration across projects.
- Adjacent open-source infrastructure: the feature named the Open Container Initiative, Cloud Native Computing Foundation, Kubernetes, and networking projects including OpenDaylight, ONOS, OOP, OPNFV, Open vSwitch, and OpenSwitch.
These examples document the article’s 2016 view of the ecosystem. They are not a current assessment of any project’s status, activity, or organizational structure. The important distinction is that Linux can act as a base for shared infrastructure while separate projects and organizations build around it; not every project in that surrounding landscape is itself part of the Linux kernel.

When is Linux’s anniversary?
There are two dates because “Linux began” can refer to the announcement or the first kernel release. The Linux Foundation says the community often marks August 25, 1991, as the date Torvalds announced Linux, while October 5, 1991, marks the first kernel release. The 2016 InfoWorld feature appeared on August 22, just ahead of the announcement anniversary. The Linux Foundation’s anniversary post distinguishes the dates.

The anniversary is useful for understanding how Linux came to be discussed as a platform and a collaborative ecosystem rather than only a desktop operating system. Its figures and project examples are historical evidence from 2016, not a measure of Linux adoption or the roster of active projects in 2026. A contemporaneous Canonical anniversary post captures one industry participant’s perspective: CEO Jane Silber described Linux as having grown from a platform for researchers and developers into a production platform across computing environments. That is a vendor executive’s characterization, not an independent adoption measurement. Canonical’s 2016 anniversary post presents her view.
