To administer a printer on a Linux or UNIX computer running CUPS, open http://localhost:631 in a browser on that computer, then select Administration. To manage a CUPS server from another computer, use the server’s hostname or address on port 631—but remote access must be enabled and permitted by the server and network configuration.

Open the CUPS administration page

CUPS (the Common UNIX Printing System) provides a web interface for managing print destinations, queues, and jobs. On the computer that runs the CUPS service, enter http://localhost:631 in a browser. The localhost name refers to the computer where the browser is running. You can also go directly to http://localhost:631/admin/, the administration path documented by the OpenPrinting CUPS project.

Once the interface loads, choose Administration. If the page does not load, CUPS may not be installed, running, or reachable on that machine. CUPS package availability and the web interface’s controls depend on the distribution and installed version; consult your distribution’s documentation for service and package details.

Add and configure a printer

  1. Open the CUPS web interface and select Administration.
  2. Select Add Printer, then follow the prompts to choose and configure the printer or connection.
  3. When prompted, provide credentials accepted by that system’s CUPS administration policy. Debian’s trixie cups(1) guidance says to use the login username and password or root credentials; OpenPrinting describes the requirement more generally as an administration password for an authorized administrator. Which credentials work depends on the distribution and configuration.
  4. After the printer queue has been created, set its default options as needed. The Debian procedure treats this as a step after adding the queue.

The setup choices shown depend on the printer, the installed CUPS version, and the distribution’s available configuration options. Do not assume every printer requires choosing a vendor driver manually: some configurations support driverless printing.

What you can manage in the browser

CUPS administration covers more than adding a physical printer. A destination can be an individual printer or a printer class, which groups printers and can distribute jobs among them. Depending on your permissions and configuration, the interface can be used to add, modify, or delete destinations and manage print jobs and the printing service. The available controls can differ across CUPS versions and distributions.

Administer a CUPS server remotely

For a server on another computer, replace localhost with that server’s hostname or address. Red Hat Enterprise Linux 10 documents this browser route for printer maintenance and administration: https://<hostname>:631/printers/. Use the scheme and address supported by the server’s configuration.

Remote administration is not automatically available just because you know the server address. The CUPS server must be configured to accept connections from your client, and the network and firewall must allow access to port 631. The server’s authorization rules must also permit your account to perform the requested task. Ubuntu’s CUPS server guide describes changing cupsd.conf to allow local-network access; follow the instructions for your own distribution and review the access policy before exposing administration on a network.

When to use command-line tools instead

If the web interface is unavailable or unsuitable, CUPS also supports command-line administration. Its documentation identifies lpadmin for managing printers and classes, lpinfo for listing available devices or information, and cupsctl for configuring the CUPS server. These tools operate under the same general constraint as the browser: the user and server configuration must allow the requested administrative action.

Why the page may not open or allow changes

  • The browser cannot connect at localhost: Confirm that you are using a browser on the computer running CUPS. If you are on a different computer, use the CUPS server’s hostname or address instead.
  • The page is unavailable locally: CUPS may be absent, stopped, or not listening where expected. Package names and service-management steps vary by distribution.
  • The remote page is unavailable: Check whether the server is configured to listen for remote requests, whether port 631 is reachable through the firewall and network, and whether the URL scheme matches the server configuration.
  • You can view the page but cannot administer printers: The requested action may require an authorized account. Use credentials accepted by the local CUPS policy; do not assume a username or group is universal across distributions.
  • The printer setup options differ from instructions: CUPS versions, distribution configuration, and printer capabilities affect the available controls. Check documentation for the system you are administering.
