Sometimes—but only on a removable fabric grille when the speaker’s manufacturer allows it. Yamaha says to lay a removed fabric grille flat and gently pass a lint roller over it; Sonos specifically warns against using one on the fabric grilles of the Playbar and Beam (Gen 1) because it may leave adhesive residue. Those instructions are not interchangeable: check the exact speaker model before cleaning. A lint roller is not for an exposed cone, tweeter, or other driver.
Why does the answer depend on the speaker?
A speaker grille and the driver behind it are different surfaces. A grille is the protective covering—often fabric, metal, or plastic—over the sound-producing components. Instructions that permit cleaning a removed fabric grille do not mean it is safe to touch the exposed cone or dome underneath.
The maker’s guidance also matters because “fabric grille” does not describe one universal material or construction. Adhesive tack, pressure, and stretching may affect different fabrics differently. Yamaha’s general cleaning article allows a lint roller for a removed, supported fabric grille, while Sonos forbids one on two named products. Sonos gives a specific reason: adhesive may remain on the fabric. Yamaha’s cleaning guidance and Sonos’s product-cleaning instructions should therefore be read as model-specific directions, not competing universal rules.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteBefore choosing a tool, identify what you are looking at: removable fabric, fixed fabric, a metal or plastic grille, the cabinet, an exposed driver, or a microphone opening. If you cannot tell whether the grille is removable or whether a roller is allowed, do not pry it off or assume the method applies. Consult the manual or the manufacturer’s cleaning page for that exact model.

Which cleaning method is appropriate for each surface?
Use the manufacturer’s instructions for the specific speaker and surface. This quick guide distinguishes the cases supported by the cited makers’ guidance.
| Surface or situation | Supported approach | Limit to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Removable fabric grille | Yamaha permits a gentle lint roller or soft vacuum brush on a removed grille laid flat. | Use this only when the model’s instructions permit removal and the method. |
| Sonos Playbar or Beam (Gen 1) fabric grille | Sonos specifies a hose or non-moving bristle vacuum attachment; it also suggests a lint brush for visible lines. | Do not use an adhesive lint roller; Sonos warns of residue. |
| Fabric grille on a listed Roku soundbar or wireless speaker | Roku describes a non-moving, soft vacuum-brush attachment. | That guidance applies to the devices named by Roku, not every speaker. |
| Removable metal or plastic grille | Yamaha describes a soapy sponge, a second sponge with clean water, and drying with a soft towel. | Clean the removed grille only; do not wet the assembled speaker, drivers, or openings. |
| Cabinet or suitable hard exterior | Start with a dry, lint-free microfiber cloth; use a damp cloth or mild soap only if the model’s instructions allow it. | Do not spray cleaner directly or let liquid enter openings. |
| Exposed cone, dome, or other driver | Leave the lint roller and other contact-cleaning tools off it. | Touching a delicate driver can damage it. |
| Microphone area | Keep the area clear of cleaning tools unless the product instructions say otherwise. | Sonos says not to vacuum its microphone area or apply air pressure. |
The guidance comes from Yamaha, Sonos, and Roku. Their recommendations are not blanket permission to use the same method on another model.
How do you clean a speaker grille safely?
Start with the manual for your exact model. If it permits grille removal and a lint roller on that fabric, support the grille flat and use the roller gently; otherwise use the maker’s recommended soft vacuum attachment or lint brush, or stop if the instructions are unclear.

- Identify the model and find its cleaning instructions. Check whether the grille is designed to come off and what tools the maker permits. Do not infer that a removable-looking grille is user-removable.
- Turn the speaker off and disconnect external power. Apple advises disconnecting power before cleaning, and Yamaha likewise directs users to unplug equipment. Follow your speaker’s own safety directions if it uses batteries or has another power arrangement. See Apple’s cleaning guidance and Yamaha’s article.
- Check which surface needs attention. Isolate the grille from the cabinet, driver, and any microphone opening. If a driver is exposed, do not roll over it or press on it.
- Remove the grille only if the instructions permit it. Follow the model’s removal directions. For a permitted fabric-grille treatment, place the grille flat on a clean, stable surface so it is supported.
- Use only the approved method, with minimal pressure. If the manufacturer allows a lint roller, make gentle passes without pressing hard or stretching the fabric. If it does not, use the specified soft vacuum brush or lint brush. Do not substitute an adhesive roller simply because a brush seems less convenient.
- Wipe suitable exterior surfaces separately. A soft, dry, lint-free microfiber cloth is a conservative starting point for an appropriate hard cabinet. Use a slightly damp cloth or mild soap only where the product’s guidance allows it; never spray liquid directly onto the speaker.
- Let cleaned parts dry before reassembly or reconnection. If a grille was cleaned with a method that uses moisture, keep it off the assembled speaker until it is dry. Do not put moisture near drivers or openings.
Stop if the grille resists removal, the fabric seems delicate or loose, or dust is on an exposed component rather than the grille. A model-specific manual is a safer next step than escalating to tape, cleaning gel, canned air, or a stronger vacuum.
What should you use instead of a lint roller?
For a fabric grille where the manufacturer disallows adhesive contact or does not mention a roller, use the alternative it specifies. A soft vacuum brush attachment is named by both Sonos and Roku for particular fabric grilles; Sonos also names a lint brush for visible lines on the Playbar and Beam (Gen 1).
These tools are not identical. A vacuum attachment removes loose dust without adhesive, but should be soft and non-moving where the maker specifies that type. Check that the attachment fits and follow the speaker maker’s instructions; avoid forceful suction or pressing the tool into the fabric. Keep the attachment away from microphone areas—Sonos says not to vacuum that area or apply air pressure. A lint brush is also different from a sticky lint roller: Sonos’s recommendation of the former does not amount to approval of the latter.
For a suitable cabinet or other hard exterior, begin with a dry, lint-free microfiber cloth. Sonos cautions against certain solvents, while Apple warns against direct sprays and moisture entering openings. Use cleaner or a damp cloth only where the exact product’s instructions allow it. These exterior-cleaning directions should not be extended to a bare driver.

If you are looking for a soft vacuum brush attachment for speaker grilles, treat that as a tool category rather than a universal solution: attachment type, vacuum strength, and the speaker’s own cleaning rules still matter. Roku’s and Sonos’s instructions cover specified devices, not every speaker grille.
Can you clean an exposed speaker cone with a lint roller?
No. Keep adhesive rollers, tape, brushes, and fingers off exposed cones, domes, and other drivers. A grille-cleaning method does not apply to these delicate components: Roku warns that touching an exposed cone risks damage, and Genelec describes its MDC coaxial driver as sensitive and not to be touched.
Do not improvise with compressed air, either. Genelec’s instructions for its products illustrate why one maker’s technique is not a general rule: it permits carefully applied canned air at least 40 cm from its Acoustically Concealed Woofers, but says not to touch or use compressed air on its MDC coaxial driver. That 40 cm distance is specific to the Genelec case; it is not a lint-roller distance or a general endorsement of compressed air. If dust is on an exposed driver, check the exact model’s instructions or ask its manufacturer for guidance rather than trying to lift it with an adhesive tool. See Genelec’s speaker-cleaning guidance and Roku’s instructions.

What are the common mistakes to avoid?
- Assuming every fabric grille can take adhesive: Sonos explicitly advises against a lint roller on the Playbar and Beam (Gen 1) because residue may remain.
- Stretching or pressing the fabric: Yamaha’s permitted method is gentle and warns against stretching the removed grille.
- Removing a grille without permission: Not every grille is user-removable. Check the model’s instructions rather than prying.
- Confusing the grille with the driver: Clean only the approved grille or exterior surface; stop at exposed cones, domes, and tweeters.
- Spraying cleaner directly onto the speaker: Liquid can enter openings. Apple cautions against direct sprays and moisture in openings; use a cloth only as directed.
- Vacuuming a microphone opening: Sonos says not to vacuum its microphone area or apply air pressure.
- Assuming one manufacturer’s advice applies to another brand: Yamaha’s conditional approval, Sonos’s prohibition, and Roku’s vacuum guidance apply to their stated contexts.
Does a lint roller improve sound quality?
The manufacturer guidance cited here concerns cleaning, not measured sound changes. It does not establish that using a lint roller improves sound quality or that dust on an intact grille causes a particular audible problem. Clean to remove surface dust when appropriate, not as a promised performance upgrade.
At the decision point, the rule is straightforward: use a lint roller only if the exact model’s guidance permits it on the relevant removable fabric grille. If not, use the named non-adhesive alternative or leave the surface alone until you can confirm the instructions.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can adhesive from a lint roller permanently stain speaker fabric?
Sonos warns that a roller may leave adhesive residue on the Playbar and Beam (Gen 1), but that guidance does not say every residue mark is permanent or describe a universal removal method. If residue appears, avoid adding solvents or water unless the manufacturer approves them; contact the maker for model-specific advice.

Can I use a lint roller on a speaker grille while it is still attached?
The Yamaha method cited here is specifically for a grille removed and laid flat, and it should not be treated as approval to roll an attached grille. If the grille is fixed or the manual does not explain removal, use only the cleaning method specified for the assembled product.
Is compressed air safe for cleaning speaker dust?
There is no general yes: Genelec’s guidance distinguishes between its Acoustically Concealed Woofers and its MDC coaxial driver, with different instructions for each. Do not apply that product-specific guidance to another speaker without checking its manual.

Should I clean my speaker grille often?
The cited manufacturer instructions do not prescribe a universal cleaning schedule. Clean when dust is visible or otherwise warrants attention, and use the exact model’s directions rather than a fixed interval.
