LindowsOS 4.5 was a late release of the original Debian-based Lindows project, but a current official, authorized download has not been verified. Historical reports document free access offers in 2004, including a Developer 4.5 promotion. Those offers do not prove that an installer found online today is genuine, licensed for redistribution, or hosted by the original vendor.
What LindowsOS 4.5 was
Lindows began in 2001 as a Debian Linux-based operating system. Its Click-N-Run service was intended to make installing software easier for desktop users. The Lindows.org project history identifies version 4.5 as one of the final releases made under the original Lindows name.
“Lindows 4.5” therefore refers to a historical commercial Linux distribution, not a current mainstream release with an established download channel. The version number also does not identify the newer Lindows 5 project described on Lindows.org.

On July 19, 2004, Microsoft announced a worldwide settlement of trademark-infringement cases with Lindows. In that announcement, Lindows CEO Michael Robertson said: “Over the next few months Lindows will cease using the term Lindows and transition to Linspire globally as our company name and primary identifier for our operating system product.”

The company’s SEC-filed disclosure provides additional details about settlement obligations and discontinuing use of the Lindows marks. This explains why later product references use the Linspire name rather than treating Lindows 4.5 as an ongoing product line.
Were free Lindows downloads ever offered?
Yes, but the documented offers were historical and limited in scope.

- KDE.news reported on January 13, 2004 that Lindows.com was offering major LindowsOS versions as free downloads to KDE developers.
- OSnews documented an interview and promotion involving free access to LindowsOS Developer 4.5.
These reports establish that free-download promotions existed at the time. They do not establish that the same image is still hosted by Lindows, that a copy on an archive site is authentic, or that redistribution is permitted today.

Is an official Lindows 4.5 download available now?
Current official availability is unresolved. The available evidence does not verify a present-day LindowsOS 4.5 image, an authorized mirror, or current redistribution terms. As a result, this article cannot responsibly point you to a “huge download” as an official or safe installer.

A file carrying the Lindows 4.5 name may be an original image, a modified copy, or simply mislabeled. Without a vendor-published checksum, provenance, and license information, downloading or installing it carries avoidable security and legal uncertainty.
Do not confuse Lindows 5 with LindowsOS 4.5
The current Lindows.org history describes Lindows 5 as an independent community project inspired by the original Lindows effort and based on Debian 13. It is not presented as the original commercial LindowsOS 4.5 continuing under a new version number.

If you find an archived installer
Treat it as historical software, not as a verified current operating-system download.

- Confirm who published or preserved the image and whether that organization is authorized to redistribute it.
- Look for a contemporaneous checksum or signature published by a trustworthy source. A filename alone is not authentication.
- Review the license and settlement-era terms before copying or redistributing the image.
- Test legacy software only on isolated hardware or a disposable virtual machine. Do not connect an unsupported historical operating system directly to sensitive networks.
- Keep a modern, supported operating system for everyday use; LindowsOS 4.5 should be approached as an archival artifact.
Bottom line on “Lindows 4.5 for free”
Free LindowsOS offers were real in 2004, including access associated with Developer 4.5. However, no current official download or authorized mirror is verified here. LindowsOS 4.5 belongs to the original Lindows product line that transitioned to Linspire, while today’s Lindows 5 project is an independent, inspired-by project rather than a continuation of that release.
