LibreOffice runs on Windows 11, and you do not need a Microsoft 365 subscription to use Writer, Calc, Impress, Draw, Base, or Math. Most Windows 11 computers need the Windows (64-bit) build; Windows 11 ARM devices need the separate Windows (Aarch64) installer.
As of August 7, 2026, the current stable release shown on LibreOffice’s download page is LibreOffice 26.2.4, released on June 5, 2026. This guide explains how to choose and install the right package, associate Microsoft Office files, add offline help, and troubleshoot common installation problems.
Check which LibreOffice version your Windows 11 PC needs
Windows 11 is 64-bit only, but Windows 11 computers use two main processor architectures:

To check your system type, open Start > Settings > System > About. Under Device specifications, read System type. An Intel- or AMD-based PC normally reports an x64-based processor; an ARM computer reports an ARM-based processor.

The current LibreOffice 26.2 Windows x86-64 package requires Windows 10 or newer, so it meets the Windows 11 requirement. LibreOffice requires administrator approval during a standard installation.
Download LibreOffice from the official website
- Open the official LibreOffice download page.
- Choose Windows (64-bit) for an Intel or AMD PC, or Windows (Aarch64) for a Windows 11 ARM device.
- Confirm the language. Choose a different language if the page selected the wrong one.
- Click the main Download button for the LibreOffice package.
- Save the installer when your browser asks where to store it.
Download from libreoffice.org for the official build from The Document Foundation. A donation is optional; LibreOffice remains available as a free download.
Which download should you avoid?
- SDK and source code: intended for developers, not for installing the office suite.
- Portable versions: designed to run from a folder, USB drive, or cloud location rather than install normally into Windows.
- 32-bit Windows: deprecated and unnecessary on a standard Windows 11 PC.
The Microsoft Store version is a separate distribution. It can be useful if you prefer Store-managed applications, but the normal official desktop installer comes from the LibreOffice website.
Install LibreOffice on Windows 11
- Open File Explorer and go to the folder containing the downloaded installer, usually Downloads.
- Double-click the LibreOffice installer.
- When the Installation Wizard opens, select Next >.
- Choose the installation type. For most users, keep the default installation and destination.
- If the wizard shows Custom Setup, use it only if you need to change the installation folder, components, dictionaries, or other optional features.
- Continue until you reach the File Type dialog.
Choose Microsoft Office file associations
LibreOffice does not select Microsoft Office file associations by default. If you want LibreOffice to open compatible Microsoft files when you double-click them, select the four Microsoft Office file-type checkboxes in the File Type dialog.

This changes which application Windows uses for those files. It does not convert the files or remove Microsoft Office. You can change the defaults later in Settings > Apps > Default apps.
- Continue to the shortcuts and startup options.
- Leave desktop shortcut selected if you want an icon on the desktop. The wizard also offers an option to load LibreOffice during Windows startup; leave that disabled unless you specifically need it.
- Click Install.
- Approve the Windows User Account Control prompt by clicking Yes. Administrator rights are required for the standard installation.
- When the wizard says installation is complete, click Finish.
Open LibreOffice after installing
Use Start > All apps > LibreOffice, or open the desktop shortcut if you created one. LibreOffice opens to the Start Center, where you can launch:

- Writer for documents
- Calc for spreadsheets
- Impress for presentations
- Draw for diagrams and page-layout work
- Base for databases
- Math for formulas
Java is not required for ordinary Writer, Calc, Impress, Draw, or Math use. Some features, particularly Base and certain wizards, may require Java.
Install LibreOffice offline help
LibreOffice can display online help without another installation. If you need help documentation while offline, download the separate package:
- Return to the LibreOffice download page.
- Select the same Windows architecture and language as the main installation.
- Click Help for offline use.
- Run the downloaded .msi file.
- Follow the installer prompts.
The offline-help package must match the installed LibreOffice language and architecture. Installing LibreOffice does not automatically install every language’s dictionaries, thesauri, hyphenation rules, grammar tools, or offline help.
Update LibreOffice
To check manually, open LibreOffice and select Help > Check for Updates. Installing an update requires administrator rights.
To review automatic-update settings, go to Tools > Options > LibreOffice > Online Update. In some interface layouts, open Tools > Options first and then select LibreOffice > Online Update.
Do you need to uninstall an older version first?
Usually, no. The official LibreOffice installer can overwrite the previous installation while preserving existing preferences. Close all LibreOffice windows before starting the upgrade.

To remove LibreOffice deliberately, use Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps. Find LibreOffice, select the three-dot menu, and choose Uninstall. If it is not listed there, open Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features, select LibreOffice, and choose Uninstall or Uninstall/Change.
Fix common LibreOffice installation problems
The installer will not start or Windows blocks it
First confirm that the installer came from the official LibreOffice download page. Windows Defender SmartScreen, Smart App Control, or another security product may warn about a downloaded installer. Do not disable Windows security globally to bypass the warning. If the download is genuine but incomplete, download a fresh copy from libreoffice.org.
Windows reports a corrupt cabinet file
This usually indicates a damaged or incomplete installer download. Delete the installer, download it again from the official site, and run the new copy. Avoid switching to an unverified third-party mirror while troubleshooting package integrity.
Error 1303 says you do not have sufficient privileges
Error 1303 commonly means the installer cannot write to a folder such as C:\Program Files\LibreOffice. Sign in with an administrator account, run the installer again, and approve the User Account Control prompt. If this is a managed work computer, your organization may need to perform the installation.
The installer asks for an older MSI file
This can happen after a previous failed installation or after a registry-cleaning utility removed cached Windows Installer files. Do not use another registry cleaner. Restart Windows first, then obtain the matching older installer from the LibreOffice archive if the installer specifically requests it.
A previous LibreOffice installation cannot be removed
Restart Windows and try Settings > Apps > Installed apps again. For broader Windows Installer problems, use Microsoft’s Program Install and Uninstall troubleshooter.

An update says LibreOffice is still running
Close every LibreOffice window, including documents that may be open in the background. Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc and check for remaining LibreOffice processes. End a remaining LibreOffice process only after saving your work, then run the installer again.
LibreOffice installs but will not open
A damaged user profile or incompatible extension can prevent startup. If LibreOffice opens far enough to show its menus, select Help > Restart in Safe Mode…. In the Safe Mode dialog, disable extensions or reset the user-profile settings, then restart normally.
Check the installed version from Command Prompt
Advanced users can check the installation from Command Prompt. The standard executable is normally under C:\Program Files\LibreOffice\program:
“C:\Program Files\LibreOffice\program\soffice.com” –version
The command prints the installed version and exits. LibreOffice’s documented command format is “{install}\program\soffice.com” {parameter}. Use soffice.exe instead of soffice.com when console output is not needed. The –help parameter lists supported command-line options.

Which LibreOffice version should I download for Windows 11?
Use Windows (64-bit / x86-64) on a normal Intel- or AMD-based PC. Use Windows (Aarch64 / ARM64) on a Windows 11 ARM device. Do not choose the deprecated 32-bit build for a normal Windows 11 installation.
Is LibreOffice free to download?
Yes. LibreOffice is free to download from libreoffice.org. Donations are optional.
Do I need Java to use LibreOffice?

Normally, no. The new installer overwrites the existing installation and preserves preferences. Close LibreOffice before upgrading.
Where is LibreOffice installed on Windows 11?
