For most teams, the easiest way to integrate web scraping is a hosted API over HTTP: your application sends a request and receives a result, while the provider manages much of the proxy rotation, JavaScript rendering, retries, and access handling. Choose an SDK when it fits your language and workflow, not because it removes the need to test the target site. For JavaScript-heavy pages, confirm the service actually supports rendering or browser actions; for structured records, check whether it returns extracted data or just page content.

What a scraping API or SDK does—and what it does not do

A scraping API is a managed service your application calls to retrieve information from websites. Depending on the provider and options, the response may be raw HTML, extracted fields, or another result format. The API may also manage proxies, retries, browser rendering, and some anti-bot challenges. An SDK is a language-specific wrapper or workflow around an API; it can make requests more convenient, but it does not automatically make a target accessible or guarantee that the returned data is correct.

This distinction matters when selecting a tool. A static page may need only an HTTP request and parsing. A page whose content appears after JavaScript runs may need a rendering-capable service or a headless browser. A request returning successfully is not the same as a successful extraction: the page could contain a challenge, a consent overlay, an empty state, or a changed layout rather than the records you wanted.

Hosted services trade infrastructure work for vendor dependence and service pricing. Building your own browser-and-proxy setup gives you more control, but you take responsibility for the browser, proxy capacity, retries, access failures, and ongoing maintenance.

How to compare services before choosing one

Compare the whole collection workflow, not just the language of the SDK. A provider that is easy to call may still be a poor fit if it cannot render your target, return the structure you need, or operate within your rate and cost limits.

  • Integration: Is there a straightforward HTTP API, an SDK for your application language, a Scrapy workflow, browser automation, a crawler, a structured-data endpoint, or an MCP entry point?
  • Rendering and actions: Can the service execute JavaScript? Does it offer a scriptable headless browser or browser actions when a page requires more than loading?
  • Access handling: Check what is documented about proxy rotation, geographic targeting, retries, ban handling, and CAPTCHAs. Do not assume that “anti-bot” means every site or challenge will work.
  • Output: Determine whether you receive raw HTML, parsed fields, JSON, or a custom schema. If the API returns page content, your application may still need to parse and validate it.
  • Operating limits: Verify concurrency, rate limits, monitoring, support, data retention, and available controls for legal and privacy compliance.
  • Billing unit: Find out whether charges accrue per successful result, request, credit, bandwidth, or subscription, and whether rendering or particular domains change the rate.

Hosted scraping API comparison

The vendors below document different integration models and billing units, so their prices are not directly comparable as a single per-page rate. Published figures cited here are the vendor figures identified for 2026; check each provider’s current pricing and plan terms before committing.

Oxylabs Web Scraper API API-based collection with target-specific quotas, geographic access, integrations with developer and automation tools, and separate ordinary and JavaScript-rendered result categories. Oxylabs’ pricing page lists a free trial of up to 2,000 Amazon results, a Micro plan of up to 98,000 results, and a Starter plan of up to 220,000 results. Regular rates shown are $0.50 per 1,000 Amazon results, $1.00 per 1,000 Google results, $1.15 per 1,000 other non-rendered results, and $1.35 per 1,000 JavaScript-rendered results. Figures are from Oxylabs, accessed 2026; confirm current quotas and rates. Consider it when target breadth, geographic access, rendering, and result-based accounting matter.
Zyte API An all-in-one scraping API with built-in headless-browser rendering, automatic proxy rotation, ban handling, and extraction. Its developer material includes Python/Scrapy tooling and a scriptable headless browser. Zyte’s page displays $1.01 to $16.08 per 1,000 requests, with tiers based on site complexity. Figures are from the vendor’s published page; check current rates and how your target is classified. Consider it when browser actions and extraction should sit behind an API, or when an existing Scrapy workflow needs managed rendering and access handling.
ScraperAPI HTTP access to pages, API endpoints, images, documents, PDFs, and other files; also documents structured-data endpoints, a crawler, and an MCP server. Its billing FAQ states that the free plan provides 1,000 API credits per month and a maximum of five concurrent connections (ScraperAPI documentation, 2026). Anti-bot or premium domains can consume more credits, according to its credits page. Consider it for straightforward HTTP integration, prototypes, or smaller services that want managed proxies and rendering without building that infrastructure.
Bright Data Web Scraper API API and control-panel workflows, with a Web Scraper API library, bulk request handling, data discovery, automated validation, residential proxies, and JavaScript rendering described on its pricing page. Bright Data’s pricing page describes plan and feature pricing, but no comparable numeric rate is stated here. Confirm current plan thresholds, feature charges, and pricing with the vendor. Consider it when a project calls for broad proxy capacity, discovery and validation features, or enterprise collection workflows.

Billing definitions can change the economics. Oxylabs says a billable result is successfully scraped content: 2xx and 4xx responses count as successful, while system 5xx and 6xx failures do not. It also distinguishes target-specific quotas and ordinary versus JavaScript-rendered results. ScraperAPI, by contrast, uses credits, and its documentation warns that anti-bot or premium domains may consume more than a basic request. For either service, estimate spend using the provider’s billing unit—not merely the number of URLs your code submits.

Choose an SDK for the workflow you already operate

If your service already uses Python, Zyte’s developer material offers Python and Scrapy-oriented tooling. ScraperAPI documents several entry points—HTTP, structured endpoints, a crawler, and MCP—so the relevant choice depends on whether you are making individual calls, collecting structured data, running crawl jobs, or connecting an AI agent. Oxylabs and Bright Data emphasize API integration; verify the language support and examples available for the particular integration you intend to use.

There is no universal “best SDK” independent of the application. A small service that makes a few requests may be simpler with direct HTTP calls. A team with an established Scrapy project may prefer a managed integration that fits that workflow. Browser automation is more appropriate when the task needs browser actions, but it adds a different operational burden from calling an API. Before adopting an SDK, check its supported language and runtime, how it exposes provider options, how it reports errors, and whether it is actively maintained for your deployment environment.

A practical evaluation process

  1. Define the result you need. Write down whether the job needs raw page content, a stable set of fields, a file, or browser-rendered information. Specify what counts as a valid record so a challenge page or empty response is not mistaken for success.
  2. Select representative targets. Include a static page, a JavaScript-heavy page, pagination, and any consent overlay or access condition you expect to encounter. Do not infer site-wide reliability from one successful URL.
  3. Test the smallest integration first. Make a basic request or SDK call, inspect both the response status and returned content, then verify that the extracted fields are present and plausible. Add rendering or browser actions only where the simple path fails for a demonstrated reason.
  4. Measure useful records and unit cost. Track successful, validated records alongside requests, credits, results, or bandwidth. Include retries, rendering, premium-domain charges, and duplicate records in the estimate.
  5. Test operational behavior. Measure the concurrency and rate you need, observe timeouts and partial results, and decide how your system will log errors, retry safely, and flag stale or malformed data.
  6. Review collection obligations. Check the target site’s terms and robots guidance, privacy obligations, and applicable law before collecting data. A provider’s ability to retrieve a page does not itself establish that a particular collection use is permitted.
  7. Version the extraction logic. Keep selectors or schemas under version control and validate key fields. Site layouts can change even if the scraping API and your integration do not.

Build reliability into the collection job

For any provider, treat scraping as a pipeline rather than a single request. Record the target, request time, provider outcome, and validation result in structured logs. Use bounded retries with backoff for transient failures; blind, immediate retries can increase load and cost without fixing a persistent block or broken selector. Deduplicate results using a stable key where one exists, and mark incomplete collections rather than silently treating them as complete.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

Keep an eye on the difference between transport success and content validity. A successful HTTP response might still contain a bot check, consent page, or site error. Conversely, a vendor’s billing definition may count some responses as successful even when your application cannot use them. Store enough status and validation information to investigate that mismatch, and alert on unexpected drops in required fields or record volume.

When comparing cost, model a representative run at your expected volume. Include the vendor’s actual charge unit, target and rendering category, concurrency, retries, and any premium-domain behavior. Compare the cost of usable, validated records rather than treating every request as equal. Hosted services can reduce engineering and proxy operations, but their pricing and platform behavior become part of your system’s dependencies.

Common problems and what to check

  • The response is blank or lacks expected fields: Check whether the page is populated by JavaScript, whether a consent overlay blocks the content, and whether selectors or the extraction schema still match the live layout. Test a rendered path when there is evidence the page requires it.
  • You receive a challenge page instead of the target: Inspect the returned content rather than relying only on HTTP status. Review the provider’s documented proxy, ban-handling, rendering, and target support; do not assume a retry alone will bypass the challenge.
  • Credits or results are being consumed faster than expected: Compare your request log with the service’s billing unit. Check for retries, premium or anti-bot domains, JavaScript rendering, and target-specific result accounting.
  • Collection is incomplete under load: Confirm the provider’s concurrency and rate limits, reduce parallelism if necessary, and add bounded retries and explicit partial-run reporting. Do not interpret a job’s completion as proof every URL yielded a valid record.
  • Results become inconsistent after deployment: Compare the versioned selectors or schema against current pages, retain examples of validated and rejected results, and alert when required fields disappear. The provider may still be operating normally while the target layout has changed.

Or skip the browser setup

If your requirement is a visual record of a page rather than extracted fields, ScreenshotNeo is a screenshot API and MCP server, not a replacement for a data-extraction API. One GET request can return PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF output. It supports full-page captures with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element capture, device presets and custom viewports, custom CSS and JavaScript, waits, cookies and headers, and other capture controls. Every feature is available on every plan.

For a website screenshot, the one-call cURL example is:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. Cookie banners are accepted like a visitor and removed along with 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers identify the page verdict and whether the request was billed. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.

The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots. Sign up for ScreenshotNeo free.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need an SDK to use a web scraping API?

No. An SDK is optional; many integrations can be made through HTTP. Choose the client that best fits your language, error handling, and deployment workflow.

Can a screenshot API extract a list of product or article fields?

A screenshot returns a visual capture, not a structured record set. Use a scraping or extraction API when your output needs fields; use a screenshot API when the visual page itself is the deliverable.
