Start by checking the console’s output modes and the TV’s supported 4K input modes. A television’s 144Hz or 165Hz maximum does not mean a console or every game will output at that rate. If your console tops out at 120Hz for the games you play, the higher listed ceiling alone may not change your experience.

Check the maximum rate for the exact resolution and input mode you intend to use, then confirm your graphics card, cable, game, and settings can deliver it. LG states that the G5’s 165Hz mode on 55–83-inch models requires supported games or PC input; its Dolby Vision inputs are limited to 144Hz. Samsung’s S90F and S95F figures are maximum HDMI input rates, not promises about game performance.
Features to compare beyond the headline rate
- Variable refresh rate: All four cited model pages list VRR-related support. The named compatibility differs: the C5 lists G-SYNC compatibility and AMD FreeSync Premium; the G5 lists G-SYNC and FreeSync compatibility; the S90F lists FreeSync Premium Pro and NVIDIA G-SYNC compatibility; and the S95F lists FreeSync Premium Pro.
- Automatic Low Latency Mode and HDR gaming: The cited pages list ALLM for these models. They also list HGiG for the C5, S90F, and S95F; LG’s cited G5 page names G-SYNC/FreeSync support but the material here does not establish its HGiG listing.
- Ports: LG’s cited C5 and G5 pages specify four HDMI 2.1 ports. Samsung’s cited S90F and S95F pages give maximum input rates for HDMI 1–4. Verify the port capabilities and eARC location on the specific local version, particularly if you need to connect a console, PC, and sound system at once.
- Room glare: Samsung promotes Glare Free technology for the S95F. That is a reason to investigate the S95F if reflections are a concern, but the manufacturer claim does not establish a universal advantage over every LG OLED or in every room.
Which one should you choose?
Choose by exact model, not brand
Compare the LG C5 with the Samsung S90F, or the LG G5 with the Samsung S95F, only after checking the exact size and regional SKU. A model family’s capabilities can vary by size, and specifications from one model should not be applied to another.

Prioritize the rate your source can actually use
If you play mainly on a 120Hz console, confirm 4K 120Hz support and the features you value before paying extra for a 144Hz or 165Hz ceiling. For a PC capable of using rates above 120Hz, inspect the precise input mode and size-specific limits; the G5’s 48- and 97-inch versions, for example, have lower listed maxima than its 55–83-inch versions.
Compare the rest of the purchase
Check current local pricing, warranty terms, HDMI port needs, and the full regional model code alongside refresh rate and gaming features. The official manufacturer specifications cited here do not provide controlled side-by-side results for input lag, HDR brightness, color accuracy, or image retention, so they cannot establish an objective gaming-picture or latency winner.
