LG HDR Effect is a picture mode for ordinary, non-HDR video—not a true HDR format or a way to restore HDR detail missing from the original. On LG TVs that offer it for the current signal, it adjusts the appearance of light and dark areas to create a more dynamic picture. Whether that look is better than Standard or Cinema is a matter of preference, and the mode is not available on every model or input.

What is LG HDR Effect?

HDR Effect is a selectable picture preset that some LG TVs offer when displaying a normal video signal. LG describes it as a feature that corrects light and dark areas to produce a “more dynamic, clearer image.” That describes the intended appearance of the processing; it is not a promise that every scene will look more accurate or pleasing.

The key distinction is that HDR Effect is a TV picture mode, while HDR10 and Dolby Vision are formats for HDR content. Selecting HDR Effect does not mean the TV has received an HDR signal. It also does not convert an SDR master into genuine HDR: processing can change how existing image information is displayed, but it cannot recreate detail or color information that was never present in the source.

LG’s HDR guide gives an illustration of the difference between signal types: it says 8-bit SDR can represent approximately 16.7 million possible color values, while 10-bit HDR can represent over a billion. Those are bit-depth figures, not measured gains from HDR Effect, and they should not be read as a before-and-after result for this preset. Genuine HDR viewing requires an HDR-capable TV, a compatible source, and content made for HDR. LG’s picture-mode guide and LG’s HDR explainer distinguish the preset from HDR content and signal formats.

In practical terms, think of HDR Effect as a display-side choice about how an SDR picture is presented, not a new master of the program. The source could be a TV broadcast, an SDR stream, or video from a connected device; the mode does not change the format in which that material was created. The word “HDR” in the preset name can therefore be misleading if it is read as a signal-status indicator. To know whether genuine HDR is playing, check the source and the TV’s signal or picture-mode information rather than relying on the preset name.

How does HDR Effect differ from real HDR?

HDR Effect processes the picture from a normal signal; real HDR depends on HDR content reaching a compatible display. The distinction matters because the same program can offer different available modes depending on whether its source is SDR, HDR, or Dolby Vision.

What you are viewing What it means What to do
Normal SDR video The TV is receiving a standard-range signal. HDR Effect may be available as an optional picture mode on supported models. Compare HDR Effect with Standard or Cinema on the same scene.
HDR10 video The source is sending HDR in the HDR10 format, assuming the source and connection support it. Choose an available HDR picture mode rather than treating HDR Effect as an HDR converter.
Dolby Vision video The source is sending Dolby Vision, if the device, connection, content, and TV support it. Use a suitable Dolby Vision mode offered by the TV.

A dramatic-looking SDR picture is not proof that the source is HDR. Likewise, a TV changing brightness when a stream or device switches to HDR or Dolby Vision does not by itself indicate a fault; LG says brightness can change with those signal changes. LG’s brightness guidance discusses this behavior.

There are three parts to genuine HDR playback: the content must be made for HDR, the source device or app must deliver it, and the TV must support the format. A compatible connection is also needed when the source is external. If any part of that chain is sending SDR, selecting HDR Effect does not fill in the missing HDR signal or turn the program into an HDR master. The image may look different because of the TV’s processing, but that is separate from receiving HDR10 or Dolby Vision.

How do I turn on HDR Effect on an LG TV?

Start with normal SDR video and open the picture-mode menu for the active TV input or app. The menu path depends on the webOS version and model; HDR Effect will only be selectable if that TV offers it for the signal being viewed.

  1. Play a normal video signal. Use an SDR program or another source that is not currently sending HDR or Dolby Vision. The available picture-mode list can change with the input signal.
  2. Open the picture settings for that input. On an older documented webOS menu, the path is Home/Settings → All Settings → Picture → Picture Mode Settings → Picture Mode.
  3. Look for HDR Effect in the mode list. Select it only if it appears. In LG’s US directions for webOS 22, the example path is Settings → All Settings → Picture Settings → Select Mode.
  4. Compare it with another mode. Return to the same scene and signal, then compare HDR Effect with Standard or Cinema. Use the mode that looks right in your room rather than assuming the name guarantees greater fidelity.

These paths are examples from LG documentation, not universal directions for every menu version. Labels and menu organization can vary by TV. LG also warns that some Picture Mode Settings controls are unavailable while HDR Effect is selected, so do not expect every adjustment to remain accessible in that preset. LG’s picture-settings guide notes that lighting, room reflectance, source material, and picture settings all affect the result.

If you are using an external player, console, or cable box, make the comparison while that same device and input are active. Picture options can be tied to an input or to the type of signal arriving at it, so changing settings while watching an app may not tell you what will be available over HDMI. Likewise, a menu path documented for one webOS generation should not be treated as an exact button-by-button route on every LG set. If the labels differ, consult the manual for the full model number rather than searching by screen size or series name alone.

Do not be surprised if choosing HDR Effect leaves some controls unavailable. LG’s guide explicitly notes restrictions on Picture Mode Settings in this mode, so a missing control does not necessarily mean the TV has a fault. Nor is there one set of calibration numbers that can safely be recommended for every model: the feature, signal, and control set can vary. Start with the selectable preset and judge the picture before attempting other changes.

Why can’t I find HDR Effect?

An absent option does not automatically mean the TV is broken. LG says picture-mode availability varies with the input, and the feature is model-dependent.

  • Check the active signal. A TV receiving HDR or Dolby Vision may show a different set of picture modes than it does for SDR. Test the menu while normal SDR video is playing.
  • Check the exact model and regional version. Look in the manual or specifications for the full model number, including its suffix and market. Feature lists for one series or country do not establish availability on another LG TV.
  • Check which app or input is active. An app, HDMI device, or different input may use a separate picture profile or signal type. Open the mode menu while viewing the source for which you want to change the picture.
  • Use the TV’s own documentation. If the model’s manual does not list HDR Effect for the relevant signal, do not assume a menu setting or update will add it.

LG documentation gives concrete examples, not a universal list. The US UJ6300 and UJ6050 series specifications list HDR Effect, while the Australian OLED55B7T specification distinguishes normal picture modes from its HDR and Dolby Vision modes. Those examples show why the exact model and signal matter; they do not prove that every LG TV in those broad categories, or every current LG model, includes the preset. LG’s UJ6300 series sheet lists the feature.

Questions such as “HDR Effect gone on new models?” or “I don’t see it in the manual” are best answered by checking the set’s exact specification, not by assuming a recent model removed the option or that it should be present. The documented examples include particular model families and regions; they do not establish a full historical or current compatibility list. If the manual and the SDR picture-mode list for your TV do not show HDR Effect, there is no supported basis for expecting a software update or menu trick to reveal it.

Is HDR Effect better than Standard or Cinema?

There is no universal winner: HDR Effect is an optional look for normal video, while Standard or Cinema may suit a particular program, room, or viewer better. Compare them using the same scene and signal so that the picture-mode change—not a different source or scene—is what you are judging.

What to look at during the comparison

  • Skin tones: Check whether faces still look natural rather than overly bright or unusually colored.
  • Shadow detail: Look for detail in darker parts of the scene, not just a darker overall picture.
  • Bright areas: Notice whether highlights remain comfortable to watch and whether bright objects lose visible detail.
  • Room conditions: A mode that seems useful in a bright room may not be your preference in a darker one. LG identifies room lighting and reflectance among the factors affecting perceived picture quality.

These are practical viewing criteria, not laboratory measurements or a claim that one mode is objectively more accurate. If HDR Effect looks harsh, dim, or otherwise unpleasant, select another available mode rather than trying to force the preset to suit every source. Also remember that some controls may be unavailable with HDR Effect enabled.

For a fair side-by-side check, pause or replay the same moment if possible, keep the room lighting steady, and switch only the picture mode. Watch a face, a dark background with visible texture, and a bright object in the same shot. This helps separate a preference for a punchier overall presentation from a genuine improvement in details you care about. It is still a personal viewing comparison, not a calibrated accuracy test, and results can differ with the program and TV.

Standard or Cinema is not automatically the right answer either. LG notes that source material, room lighting, reflectance, and picture settings affect the perceived image. A mode that suits daytime viewing may not be the one you prefer at night. Use the same signal and scene, then choose according to the picture you find comfortable and convincing rather than expecting the HDR Effect label to guarantee better fidelity.

What is the difference between HDR Effect and Active HDR?

LG lists HDR Effect and Active HDR as different features; they should not be treated as alternate names for the same preset. The distinction is especially important when reading older LG documentation, where a feature description may apply to a particular product generation.

LG’s UJ6300 series sheet lists both names. LG’s 2017 OLED calibration notes describe Active HDR in connection with adjustment of an HDR tone curve. That model-era description does not establish how Active HDR works on every LG TV, and it is not an instruction for calibrating HDR Effect. For HDR Effect, use the controls available on the exact TV rather than borrowing recommendations for Active HDR from another model or year.

The practical distinction is that HDR Effect appears as a picture preset for normal signals in LG’s older picture-mode guide, whereas Active HDR is discussed in the cited 2017 notes in an HDR tone-curve context. They therefore address different situations in the cited documentation. The fact that both terms appear on a specification sheet does not mean they are interchangeable, or that either should be enabled as a universal setting for every type of content.

What should I do if the picture looks too bright or too dim?

First check whether the TV is still showing the same signal and picture mode. Brightness can change when a source switches into HDR or Dolby Vision, and energy-saving settings can limit brightness; neither situation proves HDR Effect itself is malfunctioning.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Confirm the source format. If playback changed from SDR to HDR or Dolby Vision, the TV may have moved to a different signal-specific mode or profile.
  2. Compare picture modes on one scene. Switch between HDR Effect and an available alternative such as Standard or Cinema without changing the program or source.
  3. Check for energy-saving behavior. If brightness is limited, review the TV’s energy-saving settings using the menu and instructions for your model.
  4. Keep the signal context in mind. For a console or other HDMI device, HDR output and the TV’s Game Optimizer or HDMI Deep Color settings are separate considerations. HDR Effect is not a remedy for game input lag.

LG notes that picture appearance depends on source material and settings as well as room conditions. That is why a useful comparison keeps the scene and signal constant before changing other controls.

If the image changes at the moment a device begins HDR playback, compare the signal information and the mode currently selected before trying to correct it with SDR-oriented HDR Effect. Energy-saving settings can also cap brightness, so consider them when diagnosing a dim picture. Make one change at a time and use the relevant menu instructions for your model; a setting name or path may differ across webOS versions.

For games, keep three separate questions distinct: whether the console is sending SDR or HDR, which TV picture mode is active, and whether the TV’s Game Optimizer or HDMI Deep Color settings are appropriate for the connection. Those settings are not interchangeable with HDR Effect. There is no supported basis here for presenting HDR Effect as a way to reduce game input lag, and it should not be prescribed as a gaming-latency fix.

Which LG TVs have HDR Effect?

The feature is documented on some LG models, but the examples do not establish universal availability. Check the exact model’s manual or specification sheet rather than relying on the LG name, screen type, or year alone.

For example, LG’s US documentation lists HDR Effect for the UJ6300 and UJ6050 series. An Australian OLED55B7T specification also lists HDR Effect among normal picture modes, separately from HDR and Dolby Vision modes. Regional model names and suffixes matter: an Australian specification is not proof that a similarly named US set has the same feature, and older examples say nothing definitive about LG’s current range.

If you already own a compatible TV, HDR Effect is a menu option rather than a separate product to buy. A replacement HDMI cable cannot add the mode to a TV that does not support it; cable troubleshooting is relevant only if an external device is failing to deliver a signal the TV should support.

The examples are useful for checking what LG has documented, but they are not a buying recommendation or proof of present-day stock, pricing, condition, or availability. The UJ6300 and UJ6050 are documented US series examples; the OLED55B7T is an Australian example. Confirm a full model number and regional suffix before relying on a specification, especially when comparing listings that use similar series names. If your current TV has the preset, using it does not require purchasing another device or accessory.

Can an HDMI cable add HDR Effect to a TV?

No cable can add a picture preset that the TV does not support. A cable may matter when troubleshooting an external device’s signal, but the TV model and active signal determine whether HDR Effect appears.

Should I use HDR Effect for HDR10 or Dolby Vision content?

Use an appropriate HDR or Dolby Vision picture mode offered for the signal instead. HDR Effect is described as a mode for normal video signals, not as a substitute for the TV’s genuine HDR modes.
