Some LG Smart TV owners reported seeing a Copilot tile after a webOS update and initially could not uninstall it. LG later clarified that the tile was a browser shortcut to Microsoft’s Copilot website, not a native app installed in webOS. LG said it would take steps to let users delete the shortcut, but the cited statement did not give a timetable or confirm a universal removal option.
What appeared on some LG TV home screens
In December 2025, reports described a Copilot tile appearing on the webOS home screen after a software update. Engadget reported seeing it on a 2022 LG OLED and a 2023 UA8000; another staff member with a 2022 OLED did not see it. These limited checks show that the tile did not appear on every tested TV, not how common it was among owners. Engadget’s December 15, 2025 report, updated December 18, said the staff could hide the tile from the home screen but could not remove it at that time.
It was a shortcut, not a native Copilot app
On December 19, 2025, LG North America PR director Chris De Maria told Tom’s Hardware that the tile was a shortcut opening Microsoft’s website in the TV browser, rather than an application-based service embedded in webOS. That distinction matters: reports calling it an “app” described how the tile looked and behaved on the home screen, while LG’s clarification identified what it actually opened. Tom’s Hardware’s clarification report quotes De Maria saying microphone input activates only with the customer’s explicit consent through the browser. That statement concerns microphone input for this browser experience; it is not a general guarantee about every TV data practice or privacy setting.
Can you delete or hide the Copilot tile?
LG said it would take steps to allow deletion, but its December 19 statement did not specify when the option would arrive or which models and regions would receive it. The cited reports do not establish a single current deletion path for all affected TVs. Hiding a tile, as the Engadget staff could do on the sets they checked, is different from deleting its shortcut.

De Maria’s exact commitment was: “LG Electronics respects consumer choice and will take steps to allow users to delete the shortcut icon if they wish.” This was a promise to take steps, not confirmation that a universal delete control had already rolled out. Tom’s Hardware reported the statement on December 19, 2025.
Check your LG TV’s software without assuming an update removes the tile
LG’s U.S. support guide, dated September 10, 2026, lists this update route for 2020-and-later TVs running webOS 5.0 or later. Menus can vary by model. Checking for or installing firmware is general update guidance, not a documented Copilot-shortcut removal fix.

- Press the Settings button on the remote.
- Select All Settings → Support → Software Update → Check for Updates.
- Follow the on-screen instructions if an update is available.
To identify the webOS version, LG says to press Settings or Mute three times. For model-specific instructions, consult LG’s software update guide and your TV’s support page. The guide also describes updating from a USB drive using a FAT32- or NTFS-formatted drive and a folder named LG_DTV; that procedure installs firmware and is not evidence that a firmware update removes Copilot. The available guidance does not establish that updating, or turning off automatic updates, will remove the shortcut.
How this differs from LG’s planned Copilot access
LG’s January 6, 2025 CES announcement described access to Microsoft Copilot through AI Search on its newest OLED evo TVs, with initial AI Search availability planned for the U.S., U.K. and Korea. That planned feature is distinct from the later reports of a browser shortcut appearing on some TVs after an update. The announcement does not establish that every LG TV received the shortcut.
