Lenovo’s April 23, 2025 announcement introduced 21 new ThinkSystem and ThinkAgile models as a portfolio refresh for enterprise AI and IT modernization. The range included storage arrays, software-defined infrastructure, AI Starter Kits, hybrid-cloud and virtualization offers, and liquid-cooled hyperconverged infrastructure (HCI). It is a useful launch point for understanding Lenovo’s approach—not a complete or necessarily current product catalog. Lenovo’s portfolio guide was updated on September 22, 2026, and model availability should be checked by region and configuration.

What Lenovo announced for AI storage

Lenovo described the refresh as the largest in its storage portfolio’s history. That is Lenovo’s characterization, not an independently established comparison. The company positioned the solutions for AI, virtualization, sustainability, and infrastructure modernization. Its announcement named several offers, but it did not provide a single specification sheet that establishes every feature across every model. Lenovo’s April 23, 2025 announcement

Lenovo’s AI Starter Kits are described as preconfigured, validated infrastructure combining compute, storage, GPUs, and networking. For configured ThinkSystem arrays, Lenovo describes unified file, block, and object storage, SSD flash, encryption, synchronous replication, transparent failover, and autonomous ransomware protection. The company identifies inference, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), and model fine-tuning as AI use cases, alongside databases, ERP, CRM, virtualization, hybrid cloud, backup, and archive. These are vendor descriptions; the announcement does not establish that every configuration includes every capability.

Which announced offerings fit which use cases?

Offering What Lenovo describes Potential fit
ThinkSystem Storage Arrays Arrays are part of the refreshed portfolio. Configured arrays in the AI Starter Kit description support unified file, block, and object storage, SSD flash, and data-protection features. Organizations evaluating enterprise data storage for AI alongside databases, ERP, CRM, virtualization, backup, or archive. Confirm the specific array’s protocols, capacity, performance, and included protection features.
ThinkAgile SDI V4 Named as part of the refreshed software-defined infrastructure portfolio. Consider when the requirement is an integrated software-defined infrastructure offer; the 2025 release does not detail its configuration or workload limits.
ThinkAgile HX Series GPT-in-a-Box with Lenovo Neptune liquid cooling Lenovo describes a liquid-cooled HCI offer intended to provide turnkey inference from edge to cloud. Evaluate for an integrated inference deployment where HCI and liquid cooling suit the site and operating model. Confirm configuration, cooling requirements, and supported deployment locations.
Lenovo Hybrid AI Platform AI Starter Kits Preconfigured, validated infrastructure combining compute, storage, GPUs, and networking. Potentially useful when the buyer wants an integrated starting configuration for AI workloads rather than sourcing each infrastructure layer separately. Validate workload sizing and component options with Lenovo.

The table reflects Lenovo’s description of the announced portfolio, not a ranking or proof that the offers meet a particular workload’s requirements.

How to compare storage for AI and enterprise workloads

Start with the application’s data path and operational constraints, not the “AI-optimized” label. These questions help distinguish infrastructure that suits a latency-sensitive inference workload from storage intended mainly for capacity-oriented retention or backup.

  • Workload and access pattern: Determine whether the application needs block, file, object, or a combination. Identify whether it serves inference, model fine-tuning, databases, virtualization, backup, or archive, and establish the expected read/write behavior.
  • Performance and growth: Set measurable requirements for latency, throughput, usable capacity, and growth. Ask whether compute and storage must scale independently or whether an integrated HCI configuration is acceptable.
  • Resilience and recovery: Define recovery objectives and check which snapshots, replication, failover, encryption, and ransomware-detection capabilities are included in the exact configuration. Ask how recovery is tested and administered.
  • Integration: Verify compatibility with the existing hypervisor, cloud services, applications, network fabric, and operations tooling. Lenovo says the offerings support XClarity management software; establish which management functions apply to the selected system.
  • Deployment and operations: Decide whether the workload belongs on premises, in a hybrid-cloud design, or at an edge location. For liquid-cooled HCI, include site cooling and servicing needs in the assessment.
  • Total cost: Compare hardware, software licensing, power, rack footprint, support, migration, and lifecycle costs using the same workload and contract assumptions. A headline savings figure is not a substitute for a quote based on the intended configuration.

Lenovo-reported figure Comparison or assumption How to interpret it
Up to 3× faster performance ThinkSystem DE4800F compared with ThinkSystem DE4000. A product-to-product claim; the announcement does not establish it as a portfolio-wide result or provide independent validation.
Up to 97% energy savings and up to 99% density improvement ThinkSystem DG7200 compared with a legacy solution featuring 10K HDDs. The baseline is a legacy HDD-based solution, not every competing or existing storage system.
Up to 40% lower software licensing costs Lenovo’s calculation assumes adding storage only with ThinkSystem, without additional core-based licensing costs. The result depends on that licensing assumption and the customer’s software and licensing terms.
Up to 25% energy savings Lenovo Neptune liquid cooling on ThinkAgile HX V4 compared with the previous generation. This is a generational comparison for the cited liquid-cooled HCI system, not a general energy-savings promise for Lenovo storage.

Before using these figures in a business case, request the underlying configuration, workload, measurement method, and assumptions, then compare them with the organization’s own baseline.

What the portfolio says about data protection and management

Lenovo describes tamper-proof snapshots and software-based encryption as data-protection features. It says ThinkSystem DG and DM arrays include AI-powered autonomous ransomware protection, and the AI Starter Kit configuration description mentions encryption, synchronous replication, and transparent failover. Lenovo also says the offerings support XClarity management software. These vendor feature descriptions do not by themselves demonstrate security outcomes or recovery performance. Buyers should confirm which features are available on the exact model and configuration, how policies are administered, and how protection and recovery behave in a failure or attack scenario. How the portfolio has changed since the 2025 launch

The launch list should not be treated as Lenovo’s complete current catalog. Lenovo Press’s Servers and Storage Portfolio Guide, updated September 22, 2026, presents a broader overview and says it is updated quarterly. Its change history records May 2025 additions including DM3200F, DM5200F, DM7200F, DG5200, DG7200, DM5200H, DE4800H, DE4800F, DE4200H, and DB710S; it also records a DS Series all-flash array addition in December 2025. Check the guide and the relevant regional product page before assuming a named model is orderable.

Lenovo’s December 10, 2025 announcement added further context: it described DS Series all-flash SAN block storage for virtualized environments, ThinkAgile FX HCI, ThinkAgile MX support for disaggregated storage with Microsoft Azure Local, and an HX AI offer featuring Nutanix Enterprise AI. It also described deployment, hybrid-cloud advisory, migration, and storage-support services, including TruScale. This later announcement does not establish that every product or service is available in every geography. Lenovo’s December 10, 2025 announcement

What to verify before selecting a system

  • Ask Lenovo or a reseller to confirm regional availability, lifecycle status, exact model, and bill of materials.
  • Obtain configuration-specific performance and capacity details, including the conditions behind any comparative claims.
  • Map required protocols and integrations to the existing application, hypervisor, cloud, and network environment.
  • Confirm which resilience and security features are included, and define how the organization will test recovery.
  • Build a like-for-like cost comparison that includes licensing assumptions, power, support, migration, and expected lifecycle.
