Short answer: Lenovo’s ThinkSystem RAID 930-8i is based on the LSI SAS3508 controller and Lenovo identifies Broadcom’s MegaRAID 9460-8i as its family equivalent. That does not establish that a Lenovo card and a retail Broadcom card are interchangeable, cross-flashable, or guaranteed to import the same RAID configuration. Match the exact card, server, firmware and storage setup before replacing one.
Is the Lenovo RAID 930-8i the same as a Broadcom MegaRAID 9460-8i?
They are related at the controller and product-family level, but “same” should not be taken to mean identical hardware or firmware. Lenovo’s ThinkSystem RAID 930 Series product guide identifies the standard RAID 930-8i as part number 7Y37A01084 and says it uses the LSI SAS3508 controller. Lenovo’s RAID-management reference maps the 930-8i to the Broadcom MegaRAID 9460-8i as its equivalent.
This is a documented family relationship. It does not establish that a particular Lenovo OEM card can use retail Broadcom firmware, that the cards share all enabled features, or that a disk group will move unchanged between them.
What does the Lenovo 930-8i provide?
Lenovo documents the standard 930-8i as a low-profile PCIe 3.0 x8 adapter for SAS and SATA drives. Its key specifications are:

| Specification | Lenovo ThinkSystem RAID 930-8i |
|---|---|
| Standard part number | 7Y37A01084; Lenovo also lists a separate SR670-specific 930-8i, part number 4Y37A16227 |
| Controller | LSI SAS3508 |
| Host interface | PCIe 3.0 x8 |
| Drive ports and connectors | Eight 12 Gb SAS ports through two SFF-8643 Mini-SAS HD connectors |
| Cache | 2 GB standard cache with CacheVault flash cache protection |
| Supported RAID levels listed by Lenovo | 0, 1, 10, 5, 50, 6 and 60 |
| Other documented modes | JBOD supported; CacheCade not supported |
| Maximum devices | Eight for the 8i model |
These are Lenovo’s specifications for its adapter, not a complete specification for every product built around the SAS3508. The Broadcom SAS3508 overview describes chip-level capabilities that should not automatically be attributed to the Lenovo card.
Which features differ between the SAS3508 chip and Lenovo’s card?
Broadcom describes the SAS3508 as Tri-Mode capable, with SAS, SATA and PCIe device modes. Lenovo’s RAID 930 guide, however, links to the MegaRAID user guide with the qualification “Tri-Mode not supported by Lenovo.” For the Lenovo adapter, do not assume that PCIe devices can be connected through the controller simply because the chip family supports that mode.

There is also a RAID-level distinction: Broadcom’s chip/product-family information lists RAID 1E, while Lenovo’s RAID 930 list does not. For a Lenovo 930-8i, rely on Lenovo’s adapter documentation and the configuration supported for the specific server—not the broader SAS3508 feature list.
Can you replace or cross-flash a Lenovo 930-8i with a retail 9460-8i?
The official documentation establishes the family relationship but does not document cross-flashing, firmware interchangeability, or guaranteed migration of a live disk-group configuration between the Lenovo and retail Broadcom cards. Lenovo’s use of a 9460-family ROM filename in its own update procedure is not authorization to install retail Broadcom firmware.

Before replacing a controller in a system with data on its arrays, use current backups and get guidance for the exact OEM card, firmware and server. Treat replacement as a compatibility decision that must be verified for the particular setup, not as a guaranteed drop-in swap based on the shared SAS3508 name.
How should you check fit and compatibility?
- Identify the card. Read its label and confirm whether it is standard part 7Y37A01084 or the SR670-specific 4Y37A16227. Do not assume two 930-8i cards are the same variant.
- Check server validation and physical fit. Confirm the server supports the exact adapter and has the required low-profile slot clearance, backplane and cables.
- Match the storage connections. The standard 930-8i has two SFF-8643 connectors. Confirm your cabling and backplane match, rather than relying on the 9460 family name.
- Verify required functions. Check that the Lenovo-documented RAID levels, JBOD mode, eight-device maximum, cache and CacheVault setup meet your needs. Do not count on Tri-Mode or RAID 1E on the Lenovo card based only on chip-level Broadcom information.
- Use the correct firmware owner’s process. For a Lenovo card, follow Lenovo’s firmware instructions for that adapter and system.
How does Lenovo’s firmware update process relate to the 9460-8i?
Lenovo’s firmware update instructions say to review the package readme, extract the package, inspect ctrl-info to identify the required ROM file, and apply the update using Lenovo’s documented process. Lenovo’s example says a RAID 930-8i needs 9460-8i_nopad.rom.

The filename aligns with Lenovo’s documented 9460-family mapping. It does not show that a retail Broadcom ROM is suitable for a Lenovo card; follow the Lenovo package and procedure for the installed adapter.

Broadcom’s out-of-warranty support statement says, “OEM controllers are not supported in any way,” and directs users with OEM controllers to the OEM. For a Lenovo-branded 930-8i, the chip’s Broadcom lineage does not change that stated support boundary.
