To track legislation reliably, combine alerts for bills you already know with saved searches that discover new bills, then verify important developments in the official legislative record. For U.S. federal bills, start with Congress.gov; for state bills, use the relevant state legislature’s website. A bill’s progress and a law’s authoritative published text are separate stages, so an alert alone is not proof that a proposal became law.

Choose the right source for the stage you are tracking

  • Find and follow a federal bill: use USAGov’s guide to researching laws to reach Congress.gov. Search by bill name, subject, keywords, congressional session, or legislation type. The record can help you follow progress and find amendments and committee activity.
  • Review bill versions: GovInfo’s Congressional Bills collection contains published bill versions from the 103rd Congress forward. A bill may have multiple versions as it advances, including an enrolled version. Bill detail pages can connect to related versions, reports, presidential materials, public laws, Statutes at Large, and U.S. Code references.
  • Track state bills: begin at the official legislature website for the state whose lawmaking you need to monitor. NCSL says every state legislature provides free online bill-status information; its page reports that at least 43 states or chambers provide customizable tracking or notifications. Tools and delivery methods vary by state.
  • Verify enacted federal laws: use the Office of the Federal Register (OFR) and GovInfo’s published-law records rather than relying only on a bill-status alert.

There is no official single list of all federal laws, according to USAGov. Define the jurisdiction and subject you need to cover, and confirm consequential changes in the authoritative record.

Set up federal bill monitoring

Track a known bill

  1. Search Congress.gov for the bill by its number, title, or subject. Confirm the congressional session and bill identity; similar titles or recurring proposals can refer to different bills.
  2. Open the bill record and inspect its actions, text versions, and committee information. Use the record’s available alert controls to follow developments relevant to you. Congress.gov alert controls can change, so check its current interface for the events and search criteria it supports.
  3. For another route, open GovInfo’s RSS feed directory. GovInfo lists feeds for Congressional Bills, Bill Status, and Bill Summaries, and explains how to create an RSS feed from filtered search results. Its instructions say the initial view can include up to 100 results and new content appears as it becomes available.

Find new bills on a topic

A bill-number alert only follows legislation you already found. Save or subscribe to searches using relevant keywords or subject terms as well, so that new proposals can surface. Check the search scope and terms periodically: a narrow query can miss differently worded proposals, while a broad query can generate irrelevant notices. For federal monitoring that includes agency rulemaking, GovInfo also lists feeds for the Federal Register, eCFR, and CFR-related material; these cover regulatory material, not just congressional bills.

Track state bills and notifications

State legislatures provide the authoritative starting point for their bill status, but sign-up steps and alert schedules are not uniform. Locate the legislature’s bill search or tracking service, search by bill number or subject, and review the available notification settings.

  • Ohio: the official My Ohio Legislature service supports tracking by number or subject and sends once-daily email notifications matching account criteria.
  • Oregon: the legislature’s e-Subscribe page describes email updates when the status of a watched bill changes.

For other states, check the legislature’s own help or subscription page for what events trigger an alert, how often notices are sent, and whether a free account is required. Do not assume one state’s settings or delivery cadence applies elsewhere.

Confirm whether a federal bill became law

  1. Check the official action history. A bill’s status record tells you what action has occurred; distinguish passage by one chamber from completion of the legislative process and enactment.
  2. Look for the signed bill’s slip law. After a bill is signed, OFR assigns a public-law number and prepares a slip law for publication. GovInfo explains that until the slip law appears, the enrolled bill is the available text. The slip law provides the public-law number and statutory citation. OFR states that the slip law is an official publication of the law and admissible as legal evidence (OFR FAQ).
  3. Use the right publication for the question. The Statutes at Large is the chronological collection of laws from a session. The U.S. Code organizes general and permanent law by subject and incorporates amendments into its current text. GovInfo describes these relationships in its public and private laws guidance.
  4. Monitor newly published laws. The National Archives says you can subscribe to PENS (Public Laws Electronic Notification Service), check its regularly updated current Public Laws page, or follow legislative actions on Congress.gov (OFR FAQ).

Make monitoring dependable without drowning in alerts

Use two complementary layers: named-bill tracking for progress on known legislation and saved searches for discovery. Choose alert frequency based on how quickly you need to respond, but periodically revisit official bill text and action histories rather than treating inbox notices as a complete legal record. If the question is whether a change is in force, verify the published law and relevant current code, not just a summary or notification.

When a broader monitoring service may help

For one issue in one jurisdiction, official sources and their native alerts are a sensible first choice. If you need to cover many states, many bills, or recurring internal reports, compare services by jurisdiction breadth, full-text search, alert cadence and event detail, monitoring scale, exports and collaboration, and whether results link back to official records. LegiScan describes personal bill monitoring, saved full-text searches, email alerts, RSS feeds, and reporting across state and federal legislation; check its current service information for present features and pricing. NCSL describes State Net/LexisNexis as professional tracking and research software for legislation from states, Congress, D.C., and territories (NCSL 50 State Bill Information Service).
