At-home LED masks and in-office light therapy are not interchangeable treatments. Masks let you repeat treatment at home, while a clinic can select equipment and protocols for a particular concern under professional supervision. Studies offer evidence for some specific uses—including acne outcomes with at-home devices and wrinkle scores with one tested mask—but do not show that every mask works or that clinic treatment always works better. The right comparison depends on the device, your concern, the treatment schedule, and the evidence for that exact use.

How do LED face masks and in-office light therapy differ?

“LED light therapy” describes a category, not one standardized treatment. Devices can differ in wavelength, light output, fit, treatment schedule, and intended use. A home mask may use red, blue, infrared, or other light; a professional treatment may use different equipment or combine light with other care. The label “LED” alone does not tell you whether two treatments are comparable.

What to compare At-home LED mask In-office light treatment
Setting Used by the consumer at home, following the device instructions. Delivered in a clinic under a professional protocol.
Device and indication Varies by model. Check the exact wavelengths and the concern listed in its labeling. Equipment and protocol may be selected for the treatment goal; details vary by clinic and treatment.
Schedule Requires repeated use according to the specific device’s instructions. Usually involves scheduled professional visits; the appropriate course depends on the treatment.
Cost evidence TIME reported a broad range of about $100 to thousands for masks in 2024; this is historical, not a current price survey. TIME’s 2024 overview A comparable current session or treatment-course price was not established. Ask the clinic for the total cost and number of visits.

The FDA’s 510(k) summary K252994 describes one home-use mask with red, infrared, yellow, and blue light and indications that include wrinkles and mild-to-moderate acne. That filing applies to the specified device, not every product marketed as an LED mask. Verify a product’s own FDA status and labeled use rather than treating a single filing as approval or clearance for an entire category. FDA 510(k) summary K252994

Do LED face masks really work?

The fairest answer is: some devices have evidence for specific outcomes, but the evidence does not establish that every mask works, for every person, or for every skin concern. Results depend on the device and intended use, and study findings should not be generalized beyond what was tested.

Acne: possible improvement in pimples, not every acne type

A 2025 systematic review and meta-analysis included six studies of at-home LED devices for acne. It reported better lesion outcomes than control treatments, with improvement commonly noted after four to 12 weeks; reported side effects in the included studies were generally mild. Those findings support potential benefit, not a guarantee or a replacement for established acne care. JAMA Dermatology review of at-home LED acne devices

The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) says visible light may help pimples, but does not treat blackheads, whiteheads, cysts, or nodules. The AAD also describes home devices as less powerful than devices dermatologists use. Its 2024 acne guideline summary says evidence was insufficient to recommend for or against several light-based acne treatments. Taken together, light therapy may be an option for some acne concerns, but it should not be presented as a dependable treatment for all lesion types. Wrinkles: one mask trial showed a specific result

A randomized, double-blind, sham-controlled study at two institutions enrolled 60 participants ages 30–65. It tested a home mask emitting 630 nm LED and 850 nm infrared light and found significant differences in crow’s-feet scores at weeks 8, 12, and 16. This is evidence about that device, study population, and outcome—not proof that other masks reduce wrinkles or that users will see a visible change. It also does not compare the mask directly with in-office treatment. The sham-controlled home-mask study

The AAD calls red-light research promising but cautions that studies use different devices and schedules. It reports that in one study of 90 patients who received eight red-light LED facial treatments over four weeks, more than 90% noticed some improvement. That is a result from the cited study, not an expected outcome for every treatment or person. As the AAD puts it, “This means we cannot compare results from different studies.” AAD guidance on red-light therapy

Are at-home masks as effective as in-office light therapy?

There is not enough evidence here to say that home masks are as effective as, less effective than, or better than in-office light therapy overall. A valid comparison would need to test specific home and clinic devices using the same condition, participants, schedule, outcome measures, and follow-up. The cited mask trial compared a mask with a sham treatment, not a clinic treatment. Studies of other devices or protocols cannot fill that gap because their results are difficult to compare directly.

For a useful individual comparison, ask a dermatologist or clinic:

How much does red light therapy cost?

A current, apples-to-apples price comparison between buying a home mask and completing an in-office course was not established. TIME reported that at-home masks ranged from about $100 to thousands of dollars in 2024; that broad historical range is not a current market survey and does not establish value. No comparable clinic session or course price was available. TIME’s 2024 discussion of mask costs

For a meaningful budget, compare the mask’s purchase price with the full planned clinic course, including the number of visits and any additional charges. Also consider the time and consistency required for home use. Prices vary by product and provider, so request current quotes rather than relying on an old range.

Are LED face masks safe?

Short-term safety findings in the reviewed acne-device studies were generally favorable, with mild dryness, redness, discomfort, or pain reported in some participants. That does not establish long-term safety or an optimal schedule for every mask. Follow the instructions for the specific device, including its eye-protection directions, and do not assume that a mask is safe for you just because it is sold for home use.

Talk with a dermatologist before using light therapy if you have light sensitivity, a photosensitizing condition, pigmentation concerns, or significant acne. Ask whether your medications or skin condition affect the choice, and whether a different treatment is more appropriate. The AAD also emphasizes that devices and schedules vary, making it difficult to infer the right use from another product’s study. AAD red-light safety guidance

How to choose between a mask and a clinic

  1. Start with the skin concern. Acne, crow’s feet, and other goals have different evidence; do not choose by color of light or a broad “rejuvenation” claim alone.
  2. Check the exact device. Review its wavelengths, labeled use, instructions, eye protection, and device-specific FDA status. A filing for one mask does not establish the status or effectiveness of another.
  3. Match evidence to the claim. A study of acne lesions does not prove wrinkle improvement, and one mask’s wrinkle findings do not establish that other masks work.
  4. Be realistic about the schedule. Home use requires consistent repeat sessions; clinic care requires attending the planned visits. Follow the device or clinician’s protocol rather than improvising frequency or duration.
  5. Compare total costs and risks. Get current quotes for the full clinic course and the home device, and discuss personal sensitivities or pigmentation concerns with a dermatologist.
