LED face masks can cause temporary redness, irritation, rash, or mild discomfort. Stop using yours if the reaction worsens, persists, becomes painful, blisters, affects the area around your eyes, or includes unusual light sensitivity or new pigmentation. Seek medical advice for a significant or ongoing reaction. The available guidance does not establish how often consumer masks cause side effects or quantify their long-term risks.

What side effects can an LED face mask cause?

The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) describes the most common short-term effects of red-light therapy as mild, including temporary mild pain or irritated skin. Cleveland Clinic also lists rash or redness as possible effects of LED light therapy. These reactions can happen, but they are not inevitable—and neither source provides a reliable incidence rate for consumer face masks specifically. (AAD; Cleveland Clinic)

Do not assume a painful or worsening reaction is a normal adjustment period. In an individual 2026 FDA MAUDE report, a user described a painful, itchy, burning rash after using a HigherDOSE red and infrared mask twice. The manufacturer said its cause investigation was preliminary and ongoing, with photosensitivity or silicone allergy among the possibilities. This report does not prove what caused the reaction or how often it occurs. (FDA MAUDE report)

When should you stop using the mask?

Stop using the device and contact a dermatologist or other healthcare professional if your skin condition worsens, you develop new hyperpigmentation, you have pain, or you notice unusual sensitivity to light. AAD’s photobiomodulation guidance recommends stopping home-device use and seeking evaluation for these symptoms. (AAD photobiomodulation guidance)

Also stop and seek prompt medical advice for persistent or severe redness, significant burning, swelling, blistering, or symptoms near the eyes. Do not keep using the mask to see whether your skin “gets used to it.” For mild irritation, pause use and review the device’s instructions and warnings before considering whether to restart. A clinician can help assess possible causes, which may include device exposure, an underlying skin condition, medication, or a material such as silicone; timing alone cannot establish the cause.

Who should ask a dermatologist before using one?

AAD advises talking with a board-certified dermatologist before using an at-home red-light device because it may not be appropriate for everyone. Medication that increases sensitivity to light can affect suitability. AAD also notes that research suggests darker skin tones may be more sensitive to visible light, which can raise the risk of hyperpigmentation. Cleveland Clinic identifies medication and health-history considerations as well. These are reasons to get individual advice, not a complete list of contraindications; check the warnings for your specific model. (AAD; Cleveland Clinic)

AAD says FDA-cleared devices are considered low risk for the public, but clearance does not mean a device is effective for every intended claim or that every user will be free of reactions. Describe a mask’s regulatory status accurately and for that particular model; “FDA approved,” “FDA cleared,” and “FDA certified” are not interchangeable descriptions. (AAD)

How can you reduce avoidable risk?

  • Follow the specific mask’s directions. Use only its stated session duration, frequency, placement, and protective equipment. Do not assume that instructions for another mask apply to yours. (AAD photobiomodulation guidance)
  • Use the specified eye protection. If the directions require protection, use the type recommended for that device—not ordinary sunglasses as a substitute. Mask construction varies: an FDA 510(k) summary, for example, describes one particular wearable mask with an included eye shield, but that feature cannot be generalized to other models. (AAD; FDA 510(k) summary)
  • Check suitability before starting. Ask a dermatologist about your medications, skin concerns, or medical history if you are unsure whether light exposure is appropriate for you.

FDA MAUDE also contains an individual complaint involving transient blurred vision and reported flash burns after use of a Light Salon mask. An adverse-event report is not proof of causation or a measure of frequency, but it reinforces the importance of following the eye-protection instructions for the exact device. (FDA MAUDE report)

What is known about long-term effects?

AAD says the long-term effects of red-light devices on skin are not known and that more research is needed. Current guidance does not establish a numerical long-term risk estimate for consumer face masks. Treat the absence of a mask-specific rate as uncertainty—not proof that side effects cannot happen.
