For a practical start in electronics, read Charles Platt’s Make: Electronics, third edition, while building its experiments with the matching components pack. It begins with components and basic electrical behavior, then moves into measurement, soldering, integrated circuits, microcontrollers, and robots. Once you understand basic circuits, an Arduino starter kit paired with Getting Started with Arduino is a natural next step.

Why start with Make: Electronics?

The book teaches through experiments: try a circuit, observe what happens, then learn the explanation. Make describes it as a patient, graphical, experiential guide for readers who find other beginner materials too advanced. Its third edition has more than 330 pages and almost 300 photographs and diagrams, and expands and revises the microcontroller chapters. Make’s third-edition overview includes Platt’s view: “My bias is that books are still the best way for you to learn electronics.”

This approach can make abstract ideas easier to grasp because you encounter circuit behavior directly. It also means the book works best as a build-along guide, rather than as reading to finish before buying parts. Make’s 2009 launch article describes the book’s learning-by-discovery approach: readers experiment with parts first, then learn what happened and why.

What should a beginner buy?

Book and experiment parts

Get the third edition of Make: Electronics and the Make: Electronics Components Pack 1, which covers experiments 1–11. Later packs add components for subsequent experiments. The companion-kit description says Maker Shed assembled the tools and components used in the experiments, so check that any pack you choose matches your book edition and the experiments you intend to build. The book’s original launch description gives a historical page count of 340+ pages; the third-edition overview describes the later edition as more than 330 pages.

  • 200+ Components for Prototyping: Includes LCD1602, RC522 RFID, RTC, DHT11, HC-SR501 PIR, ultrasonic and water-level sensors, GY-521, MAX7219, keypad, joystick, rotary encoder, relay, SG90 servo, stepper motor, DC motor, breadboard and more
  • Learn, Modify and Create: Follow 35+ guided lessons with example code, then adjust sensor thresholds, timing, display text, motor behavior and control logic to turn structured exercises into access systems, monitors, alarms and interactive projects
  • Organized for Repeatable Learning: Pre-soldered modules, a solderless breadboard, storage case and small-parts box reduce setup time and keep sensors, LEDs, ICs, wires and other components easy to find between projects

Tools for measuring and soldering

Make’s toolkit specification names these tools and supplies:

  • Digital multimeter
  • Adjustable soldering iron and stand
  • Solder and solder wick
  • Wire strippers and cutters
  • Pliers and screwdrivers
  • Desolder pump

A multimeter helps you observe circuit behavior; soldering and desoldering tools support later projects. You do not need to buy every tool before beginning: use the book’s experiment requirements to decide what is needed next, and avoid substituting equipment that cannot safely handle the task.

When should you move on to Arduino?

Begin with basic circuits if you are new to electronics. This gives you a foundation in components, connections, and measurement before adding programmable behavior. After that, an Arduino starter kit paired with Getting Started with Arduino is a sensible next stage. Make says the kit components match the book and its online tutorials; check that the board, software instructions, and kit contents align with the edition you buy.

Starting directly with Arduino can be appealing if your goal is programming interactive projects, but it does not replace learning what the underlying circuit is doing. If you already know basic electrical behavior and can use a multimeter, you may be ready to start with the Arduino book and a compatible kit.

How to choose between kits and books

Compare a kit and its companion book on the features that affect whether you can follow the lessons and continue building:

  • Teaching style: Does the book use discovery experiments, or is it primarily a reference-style explanation?
  • Edition match: Are the included components specified for the exact book edition and experiments?
  • Measurement and soldering: Does the learning path explain how and when to measure or solder, and do you have the appropriate tools?
  • Difficulty: Are the projects a reasonable progression from your current knowledge?
  • Platform compatibility: For Arduino, do the board and software instructions match the kit and remain usable?
  • Replacement parts: Can you identify and replace components if one is damaged or missing?
  • Safety: Does the book or kit explain how to handle and connect parts without overloading or damaging them?
  • Total cost: Add the book, parts, tools, and likely replacement components rather than comparing the book or kit price alone.

Safety when learning electronics

Keep early experiments to low-voltage battery circuits and follow the component and circuit limits in the current book edition. Incorrect connections or excessive current can damage components. Wear eye protection when appropriate, ventilate the workspace for soldering, and provide supervision suited to the learner’s age and tools. Make also publishes safety guidance for children’s first tool and electronic kits; use it alongside the book’s instructions when a child is learning.
