Worlds 2026 uses different draw rules at different stages: Play-In matchups are fully random, the opening Swiss draw is restricted by tiers and regional protection, later Swiss draws pair teams on the same record without rematches, and the quarterfinal draw sets the Knockout bracket. Riot had scheduled these draws for dates after October 7, 2026, so the matchups were not yet known at that point.

What the Worlds draws decide

A draw determines who plays whom, but the eligible teams and restrictions change as the tournament progresses. The Play-In draw creates a four-team bracket. The first Swiss draw assigns Round 1 opponents from fixed tiers; subsequent Swiss draws use teams’ records. After Swiss, a final draw assigns quarterfinal matchups.

Riot’s 2026 structure has a four-team Play-In that qualifies one team, a 16-team Swiss stage, and an eight-team single-elimination Knockout stage. Riot’s March 22, 2026 update describes the year’s allocation changes, including an additional CBLOL slot and a 19-team event overall.

Draw How opponents are selected Restrictions What it determines
Play-In Fully random among four teams No opponent restriction stated The double-elimination bracket and its matches
Swiss Round 1 Tier 1 vs. Tier 4; Tier 2 vs. Tier 3 Same-region teams cannot meet Opening Swiss matchups
Swiss Rounds 2–5 Teams with the same match record are paired No Swiss-stage rematches; regional pairings are allowed Matchups as teams move toward three wins or three losses
Quarterfinals 3–0 teams are randomly paired against two 3–2 teams; the other four qualifiers are randomly paired Record-category pairing rule Four quarterfinal matches in the Knockout bracket

How the Play-In draw works

Riot schedules a fully random draw for the four-team, best-of-five, double-elimination Play-In bracket. Any team can face any other team. The 2026 primer lists the second CBLOL team, Karmine Corp (KC), Cloud9 Kia (C9), and MVK Esports (MVK) as the participating slots. The draw was scheduled after the CBLOL final on October 10, before the Play-In stage scheduled for October 15–18.

Because each team can lose twice before elimination in a double-elimination format, this draw determines the initial bracket path, not simply a one-match knockout pairing. The Play-In winner advances to the 16-team Swiss stage.

How the initial Swiss draw works

The initial Swiss draw establishes Round 1. Riot divides the 16 teams into four tiers: Tier 1 plays Tier 4, while Tier 2 plays Tier 3. Teams from the same region are protected from meeting in this opening round. These tiers define the pool of possible opponents; they do not reveal the actual pairings in advance.

The initial Swiss draw was scheduled after Play-Ins on October 18. A team’s tier alone does not identify its Round 1 opponent: the draw determines the specific pairing within the permitted tier matchup, subject to regional protection.

How Swiss draws work after Round 1

For Rounds 2–5, teams are paired with opponents holding the same match record. For example, a team at 1–0 draws another team at 1–0. A team cannot face an opponent it has already played in Swiss, but teams from the same region can meet from Round 2 onward. Regional protection therefore applies to the opener only; rematch prevention applies throughout Swiss.

How the quarterfinal draw determines the Knockout bracket

When Swiss ends, eight teams qualify for a single-elimination Knockout stage. Riot’s rule for the quarterfinal draw places the two teams with 3–0 records against two of the teams with 3–2 records. The four remaining qualifiers are then randomly paired into the other two quarterfinal matches.

This is not a fully open draw among all eight qualifiers: the 3–0 versus 3–2 pairing rule constrains part of the bracket. The quarterfinal draw was scheduled for October 31, after the Swiss stage, which Riot listed for October 23–31.
