LDAPS starts a TLS-encrypted connection immediately, usually on TCP port 636; StartTLS begins as ordinary LDAP, usually on port 389, and upgrades that connection to TLS. Either can protect LDAP traffic when TLS is required, the server certificate is trusted and name-checked, and the client stops if negotiation or validation fails. The protocol name alone does not make one option inherently more secure.

What is the difference between LDAP, LDAPS and StartTLS?

LDAP is the directory protocol. StartTLS is an LDAP extended operation that asks to add TLS protection to an existing LDAP connection; it is not a separate LDAP version. LDAPS is the common name for LDAP carried over TLS from the start of the connection on a dedicated listener. The IETF defines StartTLS as an operation to “initiate installation of a TLS layer” in RFC 4511.

Connection method How connection begins Typical Active Directory port Endpoint convention
LDAP with StartTLS LDAP first; client requests StartTLS, waits for a successful server response, then negotiates TLS before sending more LDAP protocol data. 389; 3268 for global catalog LDAP URI configured to use StartTLS
LDAPS TLS negotiation begins immediately, before LDAP traffic. 636; 3269 for global catalog LDAPS URI to the dedicated TLS listener

These are the common Active Directory port pairs documented by Microsoft’s Active Directory technical specification. StartTLS stays on the regular LDAP port; it does not move the connection to 636.

Should you use port 389 or 636?

Use the port and connection mode your LDAP server and client application support together. For Active Directory, use port 636 for LDAPS or port 389 for LDAP with StartTLS. If the application queries the global catalog, the corresponding TLS and StartTLS ports are 3269 and 3268. Open firewall access only for the endpoint and mode you actually configure.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

The URI scheme and TLS behavior must agree: choose LDAPS with the dedicated TLS listener, or LDAP with StartTLS on the ordinary LDAP listener. Do not send a StartTLS operation to an LDAPS listener or attempt implicit TLS on a plain LDAP listener. OpenLDAP’s FAQ on LDAP over TLS explains this distinction; its descriptions are conceptual, while version-specific configuration is covered in the OpenLDAP 2.6 Administrator’s Guide.

Which option is more secure?

Neither is inherently more secure just because it is called LDAPS or StartTLS. In both cases the protection depends on a sound TLS implementation, a valid and trusted server certificate, hostname validation, and application behavior that refuses to send credentials if TLS cannot be established.

A simple bind sends a name and password. RFC 4513 says this authentication method is not suitable without confidentiality protection and warns that a session without integrity and privacy protection can be viewed or modified by a man-in-the-middle. Configure applications to require TLS before binding; if StartTLS returns an error, do not continue with a cleartext simple bind.

  • Require successful TLS negotiation before sending credentials.
  • Validate the server certificate chain against a trusted CA and verify that its name matches the server hostname.
  • Make certificate or TLS failures stop the connection; do not permanently disable validation to work around them.
  • Check application support and server policy, including LDAP signing and channel binding where applicable.

How do you enable LDAPS in Active Directory?

Microsoft’s guidance covers Windows Server 2016, 2019, 2022 and 2025. A domain controller needs a suitable server certificate before clients can establish LDAPS. Consult Microsoft’s LDAPS certificate requirements for the applicable server release.

1. Provide a certificate that meets the requirements

The domain controller certificate must include the Server Authentication Enhanced Key Usage, identify the domain controller’s fully qualified domain name (FQDN) in its subject or DNS Subject Alternative Name, have an associated private key, and chain to a CA trusted by both the domain controller and clients. It can be installed in the Local Computer Personal store or the NTDS store; Active Directory checks the NTDS store first. Microsoft’s guidance identifies Microsoft Enterprise CA and third-party certificate providers as possible certificate sources.

2. Configure the client endpoint and network access

Point the application to the domain controller’s FQDN and LDAPS listener on TCP 636. For global catalog LDAPS, use TCP 3269. Ensure the relevant network path and firewall rules permit that traffic, and configure the client to trust the certificate issuer and verify the certificate name.

3. Require TLS for credential-bearing binds

Confirm that the client uses LDAPS or successfully negotiates StartTLS before sending credentials. Avoid configurations that silently fall back to a simple bind without TLS if a handshake fails.

Why is LDAP certificate validation failing?

Treat a certificate validation error as a failed secure connection, not as a reason to switch off validation. Microsoft’s LDAP session security guidance notes certificate name checking and certificate revocation list (CRL) verification among the factors involved in TLS clients detecting man-in-the-middle attacks.

  • Name mismatch: Connect using a hostname that matches the certificate’s FQDN in its subject or DNS SAN.
  • Untrusted issuer or incomplete chain: Confirm that the client trusts the issuing CA and can build the certificate chain.
  • Certificate or key problem: Check expiry, the associated private key and, for Active Directory, the certificate store and required EKU.
  • Connectivity or endpoint mismatch: Verify DNS, firewall access, port and TLS mode. StartTLS belongs on the LDAP listener; LDAPS uses the dedicated TLS listener.
  • Revocation check issue: Check CRL availability and the client’s revocation-check configuration rather than bypassing certificate checks as a permanent fix.

Does LDAPS replace LDAP signing or channel binding?

No. TLS at connection startup and Active Directory’s LDAP signing and channel-binding controls are related security measures, but they are distinct. Microsoft’s guidance discusses signing through LDAPServerIntegrity and channel binding through LdapEnforceChannelBinding; it treats LDAPS and StartTLS as TLS sessions and separately addresses signed or encrypted SASL binds.

Review the domain’s deployed policy together with the authentication mechanism and each client’s capabilities. A TLS listener choice alone does not establish that signing or channel-binding requirements are satisfied.

What should OpenLDAP administrators configure?

For OpenLDAP, use the documentation for the deployed version. The OpenLDAP 2.6 TLS configuration guide covers server certificates, CA certificates, private keys and cipher configuration. Protect the private key carefully. Client applications must also trust the appropriate CA and validate the server name; a server configured for TLS does not by itself ensure clients enforce those checks.
