The Lazy 7 Mini is a DIY RGB clock that uses a continuous WS2812B LED strip routed through a 3D-printed frame to form four seven-segment digits and a colon. The frame positions LEDs behind diffuser pieces, so the build avoids soldering separate LEDs into each segment. It still requires 3D printing, wiring, programming, and careful strip placement; its creator says it is not recommended for beginners.

How the Lazy 7 Mini makes seven-segment digits

Instead of assembling individual LEDs into each digit, the design bends one addressable strip through a printed frame. Tabs hold the strip in place, and openings in the frame let selected pixels shine through diffuser pieces. The route begins at the upper-left data-in point and ends at the lower-right. The result is less LED soldering, not a solder-free project: wiring the strip to the controller and power remains part of the build. Hackster’s project overview describes the frame-and-tab arrangement.

The documented layout specifies a WS2812B strip with 30 LEDs per meter and calls for 37 pixels along the route. In the completed clock, 30 pixels are used: 28 for the four digits and two for the colon dots. The guide leaves four pixels unused to avoid soldering across rows and notes that three more pixels beside the separator are unused in its layout. A 30-pixel arrangement is also possible if the sketch arrays are changed. These counts describe the guide’s routing, not a general requirement for every possible modification.

Parts and materials to prepare

  • LED strip: A thin, regular, uncoated WS2812B strip, 30 LEDs per meter, about 10 mm wide and roughly 1 mm thick. Waterproofed or coated strips, and thicker adhesive-backed versions, may not fit the frame.
  • Controller and clock: The guide recommends an Arduino Nano with an ATmega328P and a DS3231 real-time clock module. Hackster’s pictured example uses an Arduino Pro Mini with a DS3231 instead. The sources do not establish one board as universally better; choose a combination you can wire and support in the sketch.
  • Controls and power: Two 6 × 6 mm pushbuttons with 1.5–4 mm shaft length, a USB cable, and a 5 V USB power supply.
  • Printed components: The case, case clips, LED frame, left and right clips, electronics case and lid/cable cover, and diffuser components. The creator used black PLA for the case parts and natural PLA for diffusers.

The guide estimates about 100 g of black filament and 30–50 g for diffusers, depending on print settings. Those are the creator’s material estimates, not independently measured consumption.

Check the printer and strip fit before assembly

The largest case piece is 151.8 × 63.5 × 48 mm. The guide gives a required print volume of 148.72 × 148.72 × 48 mm when that piece is rotated 45 degrees; Hackster rounds this to just under 150 × 150 × 50 mm. Confirm the usable build area of your printer and slicer orientation before starting.

Fit is also sensitive to the LED strip. The frame is designed for a thin, regular 10 mm strip and the guide says waterproofed or coated strips will not fit. Avoid tight bends, especially close to solder pads, where bending can damage LEDs. Test the strip against the frame route before committing to assembly.

Assemble and wire the clock

  1. Print and identify the pieces. Print the listed case, frame, clips, electronics enclosure, lid/cable cover, and diffuser parts. Use clear or natural material for the diffusers as the creator recommends.
  2. Route the strip. Starting at the upper-left data-in end, seat the strip under the frame tabs and follow the route toward the lower-right. Bend carefully at row transitions and near solder pads.
  3. Install the clips and inspect the fit. Add the left and right clips. Check that no part of the strip rises above them before closing the case.
  4. Connect the electronics. Connect the three conductors at the strip’s data-in end to the microcontroller, and connect the USB cable for power. Use the separate clock sketch guide for wiring details and features; the illustrated controller and RTC in the build guide are examples, not a complete universal wiring diagram.
  5. Secure the cable before closing. Place the cable in the case’s intended position and secure it before fitting the lid or cable cover.

Choose between the documented controller options

Configuration Where it appears What to consider
Arduino Nano (ATmega328P) + DS3231 Recommended by the Lazy 7 Mini guide Use it if this matches the board and firmware setup you are comfortable wiring. The sources do not provide a performance comparison.
Arduino Pro Mini + DS3231 Shown in Hackster’s featured example This is a documented alternative. Check the wiring and sketch requirements for your specific board and setup.

The guide says the enclosure can accommodate different microcontroller and RTC combinations. That flexibility does not guarantee every board will work with the same wiring or firmware unchanged.

Keep brightness and power in bounds

The guide estimates 80–180 mA at low brightness, gives the sketch a default 500 mA limit, and estimates a theoretical maximum of about 2.2 A or 11 W for all 37 pixels. These are the author’s design figures, not independent measurements. The guide warns that running a sketch that addresses all pixels without power limiting could draw too much for a small PLA enclosure. Keep the sketch’s power limit in place unless you have verified that your supply, wiring, and enclosure can safely handle the load.

Is this build suitable for you?

The Lazy 7 Mini reduces the most repetitive part of a seven-segment LED clock—soldering individual LEDs into the digits—but it remains an electronics and fabrication project. You need a suitable 3D printer, a strip that fits the frame, basic wiring and programming ability, and patience to route the strip without damaging it. Its creator explicitly says, “I do not recommend this to beginners.”

The underlying project is documented as an open DIY build with printable parts, wiring, and programming instructions. The sources cited here do not establish current availability of a complete commercial kit or finished clock.
