If a Citrix application launched from a browser displays “Please wait while Windows configures Online Plug-in”, asks for icawebwrapper.msi, and then ends with “Fatal error during installation”, Windows Installer is usually trying to repair an existing Citrix component but cannot find its original installation source.
The supported fix is not to download a random copy of icawebwrapper.msi. Reinstall Citrix Workspace app on the affected Windows computer, then verify that Windows still associates .ica files with Citrix’s wfcrun32.exe.
What causes the icawebwrapper.msi error?
A browser-based Citrix launch normally downloads an .ica file. Windows passes that file to the locally installed Citrix client, which starts the published application or desktop.
The error occurs when Windows Installer detects an incomplete, damaged, or older Citrix installation and attempts to configure it during that launch. The installer then requests a missing source file, often shown as icawebwrapper.msi. The browser is only where the problem becomes visible; the underlying failure is normally in the local Citrix installation or its file association.

Citrix documents symptoms including:
- Please wait while Windows configures Online Plug-in
- Fatal error during installation
- An Event Viewer entry similar to:
MsiInstaller, 1001, Detection of product ‘{51059DCA-191F-49CD-8A37-FE5516EA52C9}’, feature ‘WEB_CLIENT’ failed during request for component ‘{1762F5BA-3F32-4A41-90CB-83C447BE6ED2}’
These symptoms match Citrix’s documented Workspace app launch failure in CTX267718.
Fix 1: Reinstall Citrix Workspace app
Reinstalling the current Citrix Workspace app is Citrix’s first-line resolution for this problem. Do this on the computer that displays the MSI prompt.
Uninstall Workspace
- Use the taskbar search box to search for and open Control Panel.
- Select Programs, then Programs and Features.
- Right-click Citrix Workspace <version number>.
- Select Uninstall and follow the prompts.
- If Windows asks whether to uninstall Citrix HDX RTME, select OK to continue.
Restart Windows after the uninstall finishes. This clears pending installer operations and releases Citrix files that may still be in use.
Install Workspace again
Download Citrix Workspace app for Windows from your organization’s software portal or Citrix’s official download location. Use the version approved by your employer or administrator if the computer is managed.
- Run the Workspace installer as an administrator if required by your organization.
- Complete the installation.
- Restart Windows if the installer requests it.
- Open the Citrix Workspace app and sign in, or return to the organization’s Citrix web portal.
- Launch the application again.
Do not obtain an isolated icawebwrapper.msi from a third-party MSI website or copy one into C:\Program Files (x86)\Citrix. That workaround is associated with older Receiver installations and is not the current Citrix-documented repair for this failure.
Fix 2: Check the .ica file association
If reinstalling Workspace does not fix browser launches, check whether Windows is sending .ica files to the correct executable. Citrix identifies a corrupted .ica association as a possible cause even when the corresponding registry entries appear to be present.

Read the association
- Open Command Prompt as administrator. Search for cmd, right-click Command Prompt, and select Run as administrator.
- Run the command assoc .ica.
You should receive a result in this form: .ica=Citrix.ICAClient.2.16
The name after .ica= can differ between Workspace versions. Copy the value returned on your computer; do not assume that Citrix.ICAClient.2.16 is yours.
Query the command attached to that association
Run ftype with the value returned by assoc. For example: ftype Citrix.ICAClient.2.16
The result should point to Citrix’s wfcrun32.exe, followed by “%1”, which passes the downloaded ICA file to the client. A typical legacy 32-bit installation path is C:\Program Files (x86)\Citrix\ICA Client\wfcrun32.exe.
The path may be different on your computer. The important checks are:
- The command refers to wfcrun32.exe.
- The file actually exists at the displayed path.
- The command includes “%1” so the selected ICA file is passed to Citrix.
If the command points to a deleted folder or a nonexistent executable, reinstall Workspace rather than downloading the executable separately.
Repair a broken association when wfcrun32.exe exists
If wfcrun32.exe is present but the association is damaged, Citrix provides this repair pattern:

Do not copy those names blindly. Replace them as follows:

- Use an association name that is not already being used, such as the example ending in .NEW.
- Run both commands in an elevated Command Prompt.
- Run assoc .ica again and confirm that it now returns the new association.
- Run ftype against that association and verify the command.
For example, if the executable is installed in a different directory, the first command must use that directory instead: ftype Citrix.ICAClient.2.16.NEW=”C:\Program Files\Citrix\ICA Client\wfcrun32.exe” “%1”
Changing the association cannot repair a missing Citrix executable. If the file is absent, return to the reinstall step.
Reset Workspace app data if the client is installed but behaves incorrectly
Current Citrix Workspace app versions include a reset option in the notification-area menu:
- Right-click the Citrix Workspace app icon in the Windows notification area.
- Select Troubleshooting.
- Select Reset App Data.
The Troubleshooting menu was introduced beginning with Workspace app 2309 and can also include Send Feedback, Collect Logs, Check Configuration, and Help. Resetting app data can remove local configuration and may require you to sign in or add the workspace account again, so make sure you know the account or workspace URL first.

If your version does not show Troubleshooting, update or reinstall Workspace. The often-repeated path Advanced Preferences → Reset Citrix Workspace is not the label used in the current Citrix user guide.

Check the installed Workspace version
To identify the installed version:
- Right-click the Citrix Workspace app icon in the notification area.
- Select Advanced Preferences.
- Select About.
This is useful when comparing the installed client with your organization’s supported version or when reporting the problem to IT.
When the problem is on the Citrix server
Not every Citrix launch error is caused by icawebwrapper.msi. If the local Workspace app opens normally but a virtual desktop displays Could not load error message, the issue may be a StoreFront configuration problem.
Citrix documents one specific StoreFront cause involving these lines in:

For that server-side case, a StoreFront administrator must remove the offending line or lines from default.ica according to Citrix’s instructions in CTX239640. This issue is specifically associated with a virtual desktop launch; published applications may continue to work.
It should not be confused with the Windows Installer dialog requesting icawebwrapper.msi. The latter points first to the local Workspace installation and the .ica association.

If the reinstall and association checks fail, provide your administrator with:
- The exact wording of the error.
- Whether the failure affects one application, every application, or only desktops.
- The Workspace version from Advanced Preferences → About.
- The output of assoc .ica and the corresponding ftype command.
- Whether wfcrun32.exe exists at the path returned by ftype.
- Whether the same account launches successfully from another computer.
- Relevant Windows Installer events from Event Viewer → Windows Logs → Application.
You can also use right-click Workspace icon → Troubleshooting → Collect Logs on versions that provide that menu. Avoid posting workspace URLs, usernames, session details, or log files publicly.

Preventing the error from returning
- Install Workspace through the organization’s approved software channel.
- Do not delete individual files from the Citrix installation directory.
- Do not mix old Receiver components with a current Workspace installation unless instructed by IT.
- Keep the browser and Workspace app aligned with the versions supported by your Citrix administrator.
- When working with a managed PC, let IT handle product upgrades and installer repair permissions.
FAQ
Should I download icawebwrapper.msi separately?
No. Current Citrix guidance for this Windows Installer failure is to reinstall Citrix Workspace app. Downloading an isolated MSI from a third-party site can leave the installation inconsistent and creates a security risk.
Why does Citrix ask for Online Plug-in when I am using Workspace?
Windows Installer has detected an older or damaged Citrix component and is attempting a repair. The “Online Plug-in” wording is a symptom of the existing installation state, not evidence that you should install an unrelated plug-in.
How do I know whether .ica files are associated correctly?
Open an elevated Command Prompt and run assoc .ica. Then run ftype with the returned association name. The resulting command should point to an existing Citrix wfcrun32.exe and include “%1”.
What if the Citrix icon is missing from the notification area?
Open Citrix Workspace from the Start menu. If it does not run or is not installed, reinstall Workspace. On some Windows systems, notification icons are hidden behind the up-arrow in the system tray.

Can a StoreFront administrator cause a similar launch failure?
Yes, but a StoreFront configuration issue is a different failure. Citrix documents a “Could not load error message” case for virtual desktops caused by specific lines in StoreFront’s default.ica. It does not replace the local reinstall and association checks for an icawebwrapper.msi prompt.
How are Workspace updates configured?
The current path is right-click Workspace icon → Advanced Preferences → Citrix Workspace Updates. The options “Yes, notify me” and “No, don’t notify me” apply only to versions before 2207; in Workspace 2207 and later, updates are automatic and users are not notified when an update is available. The update menu may be unavailable when Workspace runs inside a virtual machine.
The Bottom Line
The reliable current fix for the icawebwrapper.msi prompt is to remove and reinstall Citrix Workspace app, then verify the .ica association with assoc and ftype. Repair the association only when the correct wfcrun32.exe already exists. Avoid third-party MSI downloads and manual copying of installer files; those are legacy workarounds, not Citrix’s supported first-line solution.
