Las Vegas did not shut down during the July 19, 2024 CrowdStrike outage. Harry Reid International Airport saw long lines, delays and cancellations, while most Strip and downtown casinos kept operating. Some properties and local media did report temporary problems, so the city was disrupted—not untouched.
What caused the outage?
A defective CrowdStrike Falcon content configuration update for Windows hosts triggered the incident on July 19, 2024. CrowdStrike said the update was released at 04:09 UTC and the problematic configuration was remediated at 05:27 UTC. The company described it as a defect, not a cyberattack: “This is not a security incident or cyberattack.”
CISA said Mac and Linux hosts were not affected by this specific faulty update. That helps explain why the consequences varied across organizations: the impact depended in part on whether systems relied on the affected Windows configuration.
How was Harry Reid International Airport affected?
The airport experienced visible disruption, including long lines, airline delays and cancellations. A contemporaneous report from Public Gaming Research Institute counted 70 delays and 37 cancellations at Harry Reid on July 19, 2024. Those figures describe a point-in-time count, not the total impact across the full day.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The airport was not wholly offline. The reported effects were operational disruption for travelers, rather than evidence that every airport system or service had stopped working.
Did the outage shut down Las Vegas casinos?
No. Most Strip and downtown casino operations continued, but that does not mean every property or system was unaffected. Red Rock Resort displayed a Windows repair message, and Station Casinos acknowledged a temporary outage. These are examples of localized problems, not evidence of a citywide casino shutdown.

The available incident-day reporting does not establish that every named attraction or casino had a CrowdStrike-related failure. In particular, do not infer from the wider Las Vegas impact that the Sphere went down.
What else in Las Vegas was disrupted?
The local NBC affiliate and its parent company temporarily dropped local programming. That showed the outage reaching local broadcasting as well as air travel and gaming.

The outage did not affect every organization, device or service in the same way. The fault involved a specific update for Windows hosts, so exposure depended on whether an organization used affected Windows systems and how its services relied on them. Mac and Linux hosts were outside the scope of this particular faulty update, according to CISA.

Different operations also have different dependencies. Airport delays and queues are customer-facing consequences; a repair message or temporary casino outage points to problems with particular systems or services. The fact that a property remained open does not prove that all its computers worked normally, just as a disrupted flight schedule does not mean the airport itself was entirely offline.
