Inertia lets Laravel keep its server-side routes and application logic while Vue or React renders the page components in the browser. Both are supported choices; the documentation does not establish a universal winner. For most Laravel teams, start with the framework your developers already know, then check whether your existing code, application needs, and maintenance plans point elsewhere.

What does Inertia change in a Laravel application?

Inertia is a bridge between a backend framework and a JavaScript frontend, not a replacement for Laravel or a requirement to build a separate API. Laravel continues to handle routes, controllers, middleware, authentication, authorization, and data fetching. A controller returns an Inertia page component and the data, or props, that component needs. Inertia’s v1 “How it works” guide describes this division of work.

During client-side navigation, an Inertia link or visit makes an XHR request. Laravel responds with the page component name and its data; the client updates the displayed component and browser history. This gives the application SPA-style navigation while keeping the standard route and request flow on the server.

Does Inertia need an API?

Not for the standard Inertia architecture. Laravel can return Inertia responses directly to the frontend, so a separate API is not a prerequisite for rendering pages or navigating between them. This can suit a team that wants JavaScript page components without moving application routing and behavior out of Laravel.

That is an architectural fit, not a rule for every system. If your project needs an API-first boundary or wants the frontend to own routing, verify that those goals fit your intended Inertia design before committing to it.

Do I need Vue Router or React Router?

No, not for standard Inertia routes. Those routes are defined on the Laravel side; the client-router implications are covered in Inertia’s v1 routing guide. You can use Vue or React page components without adding Vue Router or React Router just to represent those server-defined routes.

Should a Laravel team choose Vue or React?

Inertia officially supports both Vue and React, and Laravel starter-kit scaffolding is documented for both. The documentation does not provide a comparative benchmark or identify one as faster, more productive, or better for every application. Treat the choice as a project decision rather than a universal ranking.

Decision factor What to consider
Team fluency Prefer the framework the current team can confidently build, debug, and maintain, unless another project constraint outweighs that advantage.
Existing frontend work Check whether the application already has Vue or React components, libraries, design-system code, or conventions that are worth keeping.
Application requirements Map the UI’s complexity and integration needs to the ecosystem your team intends to use. The available documentation does not compare Vue and React feature by feature.
Recruiting and long-term ownership Consider the skills available to your organization and who will maintain the application. The cited sources provide no labor-market ranking.
Routing boundary Choose Inertia when server-defined Laravel routes fit the design; reassess if the frontend must own routing or the application requires an API-first boundary.

When no factor clearly favors one, select the framework the team already knows and validate that choice against the project’s existing code and integration requirements. That is practical guidance, not a measured Vue-versus-React performance or productivity claim.

How do forms and Laravel validation fit?

Inertia forms do not turn form handling into a reason to choose Vue over React, or vice versa. The v1 forms guide documents Inertia submissions and Laravel validation-error handling through Laravel validation exceptions. The backend remains part of the form workflow; the frontend adapter choice is separate from that model.

What should you check before enabling SSR?

Server-side rendering is an operational choice, not a requirement implied by choosing Vue or React. It can add build, runtime, and deployment work, so check the instructions for the exact Inertia version and adapter you install. The detailed SSR material available here is explicitly for Inertia v1, not a universal set of current commands. Its Vue instructions describe a Node.js SSR process and a Vue server-renderer dependency; verify current requirements rather than applying those version-specific details to another release.

How do you get started with Vue or React?

Inertia’s v1 client-side setup guide describes adapters and Laravel starter-kit scaffolding for Vue and React. Since setup commands and starter-kit details can change with Laravel and Inertia releases, consult the documentation for the versions you plan to install before following version-specific installation steps.
