If your laptop says “No audio device installed,” Windows is not detecting an audio output it can use. The cause may be a missing, outdated, disabled, or improperly loaded driver; the message alone does not prove the laptop’s speakers are broken. First check whether the output is missing from Windows settings or simply listed but silent, then follow the matching steps below. These instructions apply to Windows 11 and Windows 10—not macOS.
What does “No audio device installed” mean?
Microsoft’s documented Windows message is “No audio output device is installed.” It indicates a problem detecting an output device, such as the laptop’s speakers or connected headphones. A driver may be missing, outdated, disabled, or failing to load. A recent Windows update or driver change can be relevant, but the timing alone does not identify the cause.
The message is a description of what Windows can currently detect, not a diagnosis of a particular failed component. In practical terms, Windows does not have the expected output available to select or use. The underlying reason may be software or detection-related. Hardware trouble is possible, especially if the expected built-in output remains unavailable after the Windows and manufacturer-driver checks, but the message alone does not confirm it.

It is also worth noting when the problem began. Did sound disappear after a Windows update, after a driver change, after you reconnected a USB device or monitor, or without an obvious trigger? That timing helps you choose which troubleshooting step to prioritize. It is a clue, not proof that the update, accessory, or another specific event caused the issue.
Is the output missing, or is it listed but silent?
Open Settings > System > Sound and look under Output. What you see determines the right first branch:
| What you see | What to do next |
|---|---|
| No output device appears, or the expected output is unavailable | Use the detection and driver steps below, starting with Device Manager. |
| An output appears, but there is no sound | Select the intended device under Output, then check mute and the device’s connection. |
| A USB device or monitor appears alongside the laptop speakers | Check that Windows has not selected the USB or HDMI output instead of the intended speakers or headphones. |
If an output is present, selecting the correct one is more relevant than reinstalling a driver immediately. For headphones or other connected equipment, check that the connection is secure; if the connection is USB, also confirm that the intended USB device is the selected output.

A monitor connected over HDMI can appear as an audio output, just as a USB headset or other USB audio device can. If Windows is sending sound to one of these instead of the laptop speakers, the speakers may seem silent even though an output is listed. Select the intended device under Output, then test again. If the expected speakers are missing altogether, return to the detection steps rather than assuming that a volume adjustment will restore them.
This distinction prevents two different problems from being treated as one. A missing output calls for checking whether Windows can detect the device and load its driver. A listed but silent output calls first for checking selection, mute, and connections. If outputs are listed, do not uninstall a driver as the first move simply because you have no sound.
What should I check first?
Try the quick checks in order. After a change, return to the output list and see whether Windows now detects the expected device. If it does, you can stop before moving on to more involved driver steps.
- Restart the laptop. Save open work first. A restart gives Windows another opportunity to load its audio device and driver. This is a sensible first check, but it is not a diagnosis: if the output remains missing, continue below.
- Run Windows’ audio troubleshooter. In Windows 11, Microsoft directs users to the automated audio troubleshooter in Get Help. Follow its prompts and check the output list when it finishes. Windows 10 users can run the audio troubleshooter available for their installation; the exact route may differ by version. Use the troubleshooter as an initial check, then continue with Device Manager if the output is still unavailable.
- Inspect Device Manager. Open Device Manager and expand Sound, video and game controllers. If the expected audio device is listed and its menu offers Enable device, choose it. Then check the output list again. The option matters: if Windows presents Enable device, the device is present but disabled, so enable it before changing drivers.
- Look for a hidden device and rescan. If the device is not listed, select View > Show hidden devices. Then select Action > Scan for hardware changes. Recheck Device Manager and Windows’ output list after the scan. This gives Windows a chance to rediscover hardware that is not currently shown in the ordinary list.
Device Manager helps distinguish a device that is listed but disabled or hidden from one that Windows still does not detect. If the device remains absent, move on to the driver checks rather than repeating the same scan indefinitely.

Keep track of which branch you are following. If the device appears after enabling it or rescanning, check whether the output has returned in Sound settings. If it is visible in Device Manager but does not offer an enable option, continue with driver checks. If it is not visible even after showing hidden devices and scanning, check the manufacturer’s driver for your exact laptop model. These outcomes do not establish a hardware failure by themselves.
How do I update or reinstall the audio driver?
Use a driver intended for your laptop model and Windows version. Microsoft says, “If the audio driver is missing or incompatible, install the latest version from the device manufacturer.” A laptop manufacturer may offer a suitable driver even when Windows reports that the best driver is already installed. That is why checking the laptop maker’s support page remains useful instead of relying only on an automatic search.
Check for the right driver
- Check Windows Update for available updates, including any audio driver offered for the laptop.
- Check the laptop manufacturer’s support page for the exact model and the Windows version installed on it. Use the audio driver provided for that combination if one is available.
- Avoid choosing a download just because its audio-chip brand sounds familiar. The relevant match is the laptop and its Windows version, not merely a similar-sounding component name.
Before downloading, identify the laptop model and confirm which Windows version it runs. A driver for a different laptop or Windows version may not be the right one, even if it appears to be for a similarly named audio component. The goal is to use the driver the laptop maker lists for that specific machine and operating system, where available.
Update the device in Device Manager
In Device Manager, expand Sound, video and game controllers, open the menu for the listed audio device, and choose the available driver-update option. Follow the prompts. If Windows does not find a suitable driver, check the laptop manufacturer’s support page rather than assuming that no manufacturer driver exists.
Once the update attempt finishes, check Settings > System > Sound again. If the output is still missing, do not repeat the same search without changing anything; consider the manufacturer driver or the reinstall step below. If an output returns but remains silent, select the intended output and check mute and connections before taking another driver action.
Reinstall the device driver
If updating does not restore detection, Microsoft documents uninstalling the audio device and restarting so Windows can try to reinstall its driver. In Device Manager, open the device’s menu and choose its uninstall option. Windows may show a checkbox about removing driver software; read the wording on your version carefully before selecting it, because the available wording and choices can vary. Save your work, then restart the laptop and check the output list again.
Uninstalling the device is a troubleshooting step, not a guarantee that Windows will restore sound. The restart gives Windows a chance to detect the device and reinstall its driver. Check the output list after restarting and note whether the device appears in Device Manager. If it remains absent, return to the laptop manufacturer’s support page and confirm that you have checked the driver for the correct model and Windows version.

Microsoft also describes trying its generic audio driver when appropriate. That is an alternative troubleshooting route, not a reason to replace a laptop-specific driver without checking whether the manufacturer provides one for your model. If you are unsure which driver option applies, prefer the model-specific guidance from the laptop manufacturer.

If audio disappeared immediately after a driver or Windows update, check whether a previous audio driver is available to restore. A rollback is possible only when Windows offers that option; it is not guaranteed to be present. The timing makes rollback worth checking, but it does not by itself prove the update caused the detection problem.
- In Device Manager, open the audio device’s Properties.
- Open the Driver tab and choose Roll Back Driver if the option is available.
- Follow the prompts, restart if requested, and check whether the output has returned.
If rollback is unavailable, do not treat that as a failed repair—the required earlier driver may not be stored. Check for pending Windows updates and restart after installing them, then recheck the output list.
Rollback is specifically a way to return to a previous driver when one is available. It is not the same as installing an arbitrary older download, and the option may be unavailable if Windows has no earlier version to restore. If you cannot roll back, use the other documented routes: check pending Windows updates, confirm the manufacturer’s driver for your laptop model, and continue with the remaining troubleshooting steps.
Should I restart Windows audio services?
If the output remains unavailable after the detection and driver checks, Microsoft recommends restarting Windows Audio and Windows Audio Endpoint Builder through the Services app. This is another troubleshooting step, not proof that either service caused the original problem.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Open Services in Windows.
- Find Windows Audio, open its menu, and choose Restart.
- Repeat for Windows Audio Endpoint Builder.
- Check Settings > System > Sound to see whether the expected output is available.
Restarting these services is worth trying after the earlier checks, but it should not replace checking device detection and the correct driver. If the expected output still does not appear, note what you have already tried and move toward model-specific manufacturer diagnosis rather than repeatedly restarting services or rescanning without a change.
When should I seek manufacturer help or use another output?
If the expected built-in output is still undetected after Windows troubleshooting and checking the appropriate manufacturer driver, seek diagnosis for your specific laptop model. The Windows message by itself does not establish hardware failure, so treat hardware trouble as a possibility to investigate—not a diagnosis. The manufacturer can provide model-specific next steps once you can tell them whether the device appears in Device Manager, whether enabling or scanning changed anything, and which driver checks you completed.

An external USB audio device can provide another output while the built-in issue remains unresolved. For someone who already owns suitable wired headphones, an external USB sound card or USB audio adapter with a 3.5 mm headphone output may be an option; check that the device supports the laptop’s Windows version and fits its available USB port. Some adapters have separate headphone and microphone jacks, so verify the connections your equipment requires. A USB headset is another option when a complete headset is needed, but it is not necessary if existing headphones are suitable.
For a purchase search, terms such as USB external sound card 3.5mm audio adapter or USB audio adapter describe the category. A USB-A adapter will not fit a laptop that lacks a matching port unless you have a suitable way to connect it, so check the port before choosing a device. Also check the product’s stated operating-system support and whether you need one combined headphone connection or separate headphone and microphone jacks. Do not buy a headset simply to troubleshoot if your existing headphones meet your needs.
StarTech.com’s ICUSBAUDIO/ICUSBAUDIOB manual, marked revision 06/02/2022, describes a USB-A adapter with separate 3.5 mm headphone output and microphone input and says, “No driver installation should be required.” That statement applies to the documented adapter, not to every USB audio product. The manual does not establish current Windows 11 compatibility or the current availability of those exact models, so verify operating-system support before choosing any specific device. An adapter supplies a separate audio route; it does not repair the laptop’s internal speakers or their driver.
Think of an adapter as a workaround, not a repair. If it works, it may let you use compatible headphones through a separate USB audio device while the built-in output remains undetected. It does not establish why the laptop’s internal audio disappeared, and it does not fix the internal speakers or their driver. The Windows checks above remain useful even if you decide an external output is enough for now.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does this advice apply to Windows 10 and Windows 11?
Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance covers both Windows 10 and Windows 11, but menu labels or available options may vary by version. The steps here use Windows paths and labels; they are not macOS instructions. On Windows 11, Microsoft points users to the audio troubleshooter in Get Help.
Microsoft’s support-end date for Windows 10 was October 14, 2025. A laptop does not stop working on that date, but that milestone is relevant when deciding which Windows version and manufacturer driver apply to a device. Confirm the installed Windows version before selecting a driver or following version-specific prompts.

If the laptop runs Windows 10, the support-end date does not mean that the computer stopped functioning or that this audio message has a different meaning. It does mean you should pay attention to the version for which a manufacturer offers a driver and to any version-specific instructions. Do not follow Windows menu paths as though they were instructions for macOS; this guide covers Windows 10 and Windows 11.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does “No audio output device is installed” mean my speakers are broken?
No. The message indicates that Windows is not detecting an output it can use. A missing, outdated, disabled, or improperly loaded driver can be involved; hardware trouble is possible, but the message alone does not confirm broken speakers.
What should I do first if the output is missing?
Restart the laptop, run the Windows audio troubleshooter, and inspect Device Manager. Expand Sound, video and game controllers; enable the device if that option appears. If it is absent, show hidden devices and scan for hardware changes.
What if my output is listed but there is no sound?
Select the intended device under Settings > System > Sound > Output. Check mute and the connection, and make sure Windows has not selected a USB device or HDMI-connected monitor instead of the laptop speakers or headphones.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhy should I check the laptop manufacturer’s driver if Windows says the best driver is installed?
Microsoft notes that a manufacturer may offer a suitable driver even when Windows reports that its best driver is installed. Check the support page for your exact laptop model and Windows version.
Can I roll back an audio driver after an update?
Possibly. In Device Manager, open the audio device’s Properties, then the Driver tab, and choose Roll Back Driver if available. Windows must have an earlier driver version to offer that option.
Will restarting Windows Audio services definitely fix the problem?
No. Microsoft recommends restarting Windows Audio and Windows Audio Endpoint Builder as troubleshooting steps, but this does not prove that either service caused the detection problem or guarantee a fix.
Will a USB audio adapter fix the laptop’s built-in speakers?
No. An adapter can provide a separate output for compatible headphones or audio equipment, but it does not repair the internal speakers or the driver that Windows uses to detect them. Check the adapter’s USB port, operating-system support, and jack arrangement before buying.
Can I keep using my laptop after Windows 10’s support-end date?
Yes. Microsoft’s October 14, 2025 support-end date did not make Windows 10 computers stop working. Identify the installed Windows version when looking for a compatible laptop driver.
The Bottom Line
“No audio device installed” is a Windows detection symptom, not proof that your speakers have failed. First determine whether the output is missing or simply selected incorrectly, then restart, run the troubleshooter, and check Device Manager. Use a driver intended for your laptop model and Windows version; if an update preceded the issue, rollback is worth checking only when Windows offers it. If the built-in output remains undetected, seek manufacturer diagnosis. A USB adapter can provide a separate output, but it does not repair the internal audio.
