A tablet is a strong choice for reading, annotating PDFs, handwritten notes, and lighter work on the move. The best fit still depends on your course requirements and how you work day to day.
Why a laptop is the better default for one-device students
A laptop typically gives you a built-in keyboard and trackpad, a desktop-style operating system, and an easier setup for sustained typing and switching between applications. Those advantages matter when you’re drafting long papers, researching with multiple tabs and documents open, or using software that expects a full desktop environment.
Microsoft’s US-market device guide, dated April 9, 2026, says a laptop is a better primary device for most students because it handles typing, research, and full desktop apps more easily. Course-specific requirements can make the choice clearer. Hastings College IT recommends a laptop as a primary college device and flags possible tablet limitations with specialist software, file management, and online exam proctoring. When a tablet makes more sense
Choose a tablet if your workload centers on reading, marking up PDFs, handwriting notes with a stylus, or carrying a light device between classes. For these tasks, touch and pen input can be more convenient than a laptop’s keyboard-first setup. Microsoft describes tablets as a strong secondary device for reading, annotation, and portability. A tablet can also be a reasonable primary device if your school’s required apps and systems work on it and most of your work is light typing, reading, and web-based study. Confirm that compatibility before buying; a keyboard does not make unsupported desktop software or exam tools available.

Budget for typing accessories
If you expect to write assignments on a tablet, include a compatible attachable keyboard or keyboard case in the total cost. New Zealand’s Ministry of Education advises parents and caregivers: “if you buy a tablet, get an attachable keyboard too”. Its page is aimed at school-age children, but the practical point applies to anyone who needs to type regularly: check keyboard compatibility and price before choosing the tablet. How to choose for your course and routine
- Check course and institution requirements first. Look for named applications, supported operating systems, exam-proctoring tools, school platforms, and any published minimum specifications. If something is unclear, ask your school or department before you buy.
- Match the device to your main work. Frequent long-form writing, multitasking, or desktop applications favor a laptop. Reading, PDF annotation, and handwritten notes favor a tablet or a convertible device with pen support.
- Consider where and how long you’ll use it. Compare device weight and battery life against your commute, timetable, and access to power. New Zealand’s Ministry of Education recommends a battery lasting at least a six-hour school day for the child-device context on its page; that is not a universal college specification. - Check the full setup cost. Include any keyboard, stylus, dock, protective case, or required software—not just the device price. A tablet that needs a keyboard for your assignments may cost more as a complete study setup than its headline price suggests.
- Check support, repairs, and useful life. Find out what updates, warranty coverage, and repair options are available where you live. Is a 2-in-1 a good compromise?
A 2-in-1 can suit students who want a keyboard for writing and desktop-style capabilities alongside touch or pen input for notes and annotation. It is worth considering when both modes are genuinely useful in your coursework. Check the exact model’s operating system, required-app compatibility, keyboard setup, and pen support: “2-in-1” describes a form factor, not a guarantee that it will run every application your course requires.
