LangGraph is the more direct fit when the workflow itself must be an explicit, inspectable state machine—with custom branching, human-approval pauses, and carefully designed recovery paths. CrewAI is a natural fit when structured Flows should coordinate collaborative agent teams called Crews. The two frameworks document persistence and resumability, but not identical semantics; neither is a universal winner for every stateful workflow.
How each framework represents a workflow
LangGraph: nodes, shared state, and transitions
LangGraph models a process as discrete nodes connected by transitions. Nodes perform steps, shared state carries information between them, and routing determines what runs next. This suits applications where developers need to define the workflow’s decisions and branches directly.
LangChain’s “Thinking in LangGraph” guide recommends putting information that must persist between steps in state and deriving values that can be recalculated. That distinction helps keep state useful without storing every intermediate value.
CrewAI: Flows for orchestration, Crews for collaboration
CrewAI separates structured execution from collaborative agent work. Flows manage sequencing, state transitions, conditional logic, and execution paths; Crews are teams of specialized agents working together on tasks. A Flow can invoke a Crew for a bounded portion of a larger automation.

This Flow-plus-Crew model is a useful starting point when the application has a predictable event-driven structure but benefits from agents collaborating within particular steps.

Which framework supports pause and resume?
Both systems document persistence or resumability, but the available documentation does not show that they implement it in the same way. The distinction matters if a workflow must stop for a person, preserve its context, and continue later.

LangGraph’s documented human-review pattern
In the LangChain guide, a graph is compiled with a checkpointer and run with a thread identifier. At an interrupt, execution pauses and the state is saved; the run can then resume when input is supplied. The guide describes resuming days later, but that example is not a promise of unlimited retention or a guarantee that a deployment meets a particular privacy, durability, or compliance requirement.
CrewAI Flow persistence
CrewAI documentation describes Flows as supporting persistence and resumability. The reviewed material does not establish the same interrupt, checkpoint, and thread-identifier behavior as the LangGraph example. If a particular approval or recovery interaction is mandatory, verify that exact interaction against the current framework version and the persistence setup you intend to operate.

How recovery and inspectability affect the choice
In LangGraph, node boundaries are a design choice with operational consequences. Smaller nodes can produce more checkpoints, limit how much work must be repeated after a failure or interruption, and make intermediate decisions easier to inspect. They also require the workflow to be designed at a finer level of granularity. The guide treats caching as an application-level choice implemented in node functions rather than a prescribed framework behavior.
The guide also distinguishes expected problems from unexpected ones: transient errors can be retried, tool errors can be handled through loops that let an LLM respond, and unexpected errors can surface for debugging. That documented specificity is useful when the recovery behavior is part of the application’s requirements.

CrewAI’s documentation describes Flows as structured and deterministic, with error handling, but the cited material does not establish equivalent details for retry policies or recovery branches. Do not infer identical behavior from the fact that both frameworks support orchestration and persistence; validate the failure cases your application must handle.
How to choose for your workflow
- Map the decisions that must remain explicit. If approval gates, conditional routes, retries, and recovery branches define the business process, prototype them as graph nodes and transitions in LangGraph.
- Identify where collaboration is actually needed. If most steps are predictable automation and some bounded tasks benefit from specialized agents working together, evaluate a CrewAI Flow that invokes Crews for those tasks.
- Write down the pause-and-resume contract. Specify what is saved, what input restarts the process, how long it must remain resumable, and what happens if resumption fails. Test those requirements on the exact persistence backend and deployment configuration.
- Exercise failure paths, not just the happy path. Test transient tool errors, unexpected exceptions, human delays, and recovery from interrupted work. Observe which intermediate state is available and how much work must be repeated.
- Compare the operating model as well as the code model. Consider team familiarity, state inspection needs, deployment mode, observability, and operational cost. Framework documentation alone does not settle workload-specific performance or current package compatibility.
Framework versus production platform
LangSmith Agent Server documentation describes PostgreSQL as the persistence layer for server resources and the default backend for graph checkpoints. MongoDB is documented as an alternative checkpoint store in supported deployment configurations, while PostgreSQL remains required for other server resources. Tracing is automatically configured for Agent Server, with availability dependent on deployment mode. These are Agent Server details, not requirements that apply to the open-source LangGraph library in general.

CrewAI AMP is described by its vendor as a managed platform for deploying, monitoring, and scaling agents and Crews. Listed features include REST API access, traces and logs, a tool repository, webhook streaming, and Crew Studio. Evaluate either managed platform separately from the framework’s workflow model; the documentation does not make either platform mandatory for framework use.
What the comparison cannot establish
The official documentation described here does not provide a head-to-head benchmark or quantified evidence that LangGraph or CrewAI is faster or more reliable for a given workload. It also does not settle current package compatibility, licensing comparison, pricing, or workload-specific performance. Those are implementation-planning questions that require checking the versions, deployment options, and terms relevant to your project.
