In 2005, The Laird Group PLC acquired thermoelectric-cooler maker Melcor Corp. and its Chinese subsidiary, Melcor Hua Yua, in a deal that Electronic Design reported as broadening Laird’s thermal-management products and reach. The report put the price at $17.4 million, plus $2.6 million for a third-party minority interest in Melcor’s Chinese joint venture. It describes the company’s plans at the time, not the businesses’ present ownership or product availability.
What did Laird acquire?
Electronic Design reported on November 9, 2005, that The Laird Group PLC acquired Trenton, New Jersey-based Melcor Corp. and its Chinese subsidiary, Melcor Hua Yua. The transaction was all cash, according to the article. Melcor made thermoelectric coolers, also known as thermoelectric modules.
The report gave the acquisition amount as $17.4 million and separately reported $2.6 million to purchase a third-party minority interest in Melcor’s Chinese joint venture. It did not state a separate combined transaction value. Electronic Design’s 2005 account is the source for these terms; it is a historical trade-publication report rather than a primary transaction filing.
Why did the deal matter to Laird?
The stated strategic aim was to add thermoelectric cooling to Laird’s thermal-management portfolio and widen the markets it could serve. The report named medical, consumer, industrial, telecom, automotive, and IT sectors. Laird said Melcor and its management would be integrated into Laird Technologies’ Thermal Management business, with access to product-development and application-engineering resources and a broader global customer and support presence.

Those points describe the rationale and expected benefits presented at the time; the 2005 article does not establish whether the integration delivered them. Michael Dreyer, then vice president and general manager of Laird’s Thermal Products Division, described Melcor as a leader in thermoelectric-module manufacturing and technology and said its products would increase Laird’s presence in several end-user markets while expanding its thermal-management solutions. Laird CEO Peter Hill characterized the purchase as part of a strategy to build positions and key technologies in core markets through acquisitions.
What the article does not establish
- It does not document Melcor’s later ownership, the subsequent status of Melcor Hua Yua, or any later integration outcome.
- It does not identify a specific cooler model, replacement part, or accessory, and does not verify that Melcor-branded products remain available.
