It can help with editing and archiving, but it cannot restore quality already lost during capture, conversion, or processing. Because its published release is old, check that it works with your operating system, application, and source format before building an important workflow around it.
What Lagarith does—and what “lossless” means
Lagarith reduces video file size without intentionally discarding pixel information during its own encode-and-decode process. If the video reaching the codec has already been degraded, however, Lagarith preserves that degraded input rather than repairing it. Lossy capture, a colorspace conversion, filtering, or a later lossy export can all change the image independently of the codec.
That makes Lagarith potentially useful for retaining captured footage or intermediate files when preserving the pixels supplied to the codec matters. It is not a guarantee that every step from camera or capture device to final export is lossless.
How Lagarith compresses video
The project describes a process that predicts pixel values using median prediction, then applies modified run-length coding when it improves compression, followed by arithmetic coding. Arithmetic coding can represent symbols using fractional bits on average, which can help with simple or repeated content. For consecutive frames that are mathematically identical, Lagarith can encode a null frame so the decoder reuses the preceding frame.

These are design features, not a promise that every clip will compress especially well or encode quickly. The project says Lagarith generally compresses better than Huffyuv and can be faster than some codecs that may compress better, including FFV1. Those are project-level comparisons, not current independent benchmark results.
Supported formats and workflow compatibility
The Lagarith project lists these pixel formats: RGB24, RGB32, RGBA, YUY2, and YV12. Check the format actually delivered by your capture device or editing application and confirm that the codec accepts it. A codec appearing in a menu does not prove that it can encode the format selected elsewhere in the workflow.

Lagarith is a Video for Windows-era codec. VirtualDub explains that Video for Windows codecs are third-party compression and decompression drivers, and that capture codecs must be compatible with the selected capture format. Its capture documentation generally recommends YUY2, UYVY, or YVYU rather than RGB24 when the hardware and codec support those formats; this is general legacy capture guidance, not a Lagarith-specific guarantee. See VirtualDub’s capture documentation and codec documentation.
A FOURCC in an AVI identifies the video format, while the friendly codec name displayed by software can depend on the installed decoder. FFmpeg’s Lagarith decoder source documents decoding for formats including YUY2, RGB24, RGBA, and YV12, as well as raw and solid-color frame forms. Decoder support does not establish that a particular FFmpeg build or editing application can encode Lagarith. See FFmpeg’s Lagarith decoder source.

Release age and installation context
The project page lists version 1.3.27 installer and manual-installation packages and says Lagarith was last updated on December 8, 2011. It describes the installer as supporting 32-bit and 64-bit Windows except Windows 2000. For Windows 2000, it directs users to version 1.3.23 because that system does not support the multithreading changes introduced in 1.3.24. These are the project’s published details, not confirmation that the downloads or codec work on current Windows versions. Check the Lagarith project page and verify compatibility in your specific application and operating system.
How to decide whether Lagarith fits your archive
- Test your own footage. Compression depends on the source and image activity. The project estimates 10–30% better compression than Huffyuv for DVD video, but does not state a publication year; treat this as a project-published, bounded estimate, not a general guarantee or modern independent benchmark.
- Check speed as well as file size. Encoding and decoding performance depends on your footage, hardware, and software. The project’s comparisons do not substitute for a test on your system.
- Confirm the required pixel formats. Verify that the full workflow supports the particular input and output formats you need; the formats listed by the project are RGB24, RGB32, RGBA, YUY2, and YV12.
- Check future access. Confirm that the AVI workflow and codec remain usable in the applications you expect to use. Consider keeping a separate preservation copy if access to the original codec environment could become a concern.
A short verification procedure
- Choose a representative short clip, including any formats or scene types important to your archive.
- Confirm that your capture or editing application supplies a pixel format supported by Lagarith and that the codec is available to the application’s architecture.
- Encode the clip, then decode it and compare the decoded pixels with the exact input delivered to the codec. This checks codec-level preservation; it does not assess losses that occurred before encoding.
- Check the resulting file size and encode/decode time against the alternatives you are considering, using the same clip and workflow.
- Reopen the encoded file in the application you expect to use later before committing a large archive.
Is Lagarith right for preserving video?
Lagarith can serve as a lossless compression option when the software can encode the required format and the files remain accessible in your workflow. Its age makes a representative compatibility and output test especially important. Compare it with alternatives using your own footage rather than assuming its compression, speed, or future availability will suit every archive.
