The “could not assemble transaction” message is a generic wrapper, not a diagnosis. In the LFS272 Lab 4 Hyperledger Fabric examples, the useful cause is usually the nested text after msg: a Docker network name mismatch, an uninstalled chaincode package, or a chaincode build or container failure. Fix the underlying cause rather than retrying the same instantiation command.
What the error means
During chaincode instantiation, Fabric may report that the proposal response was not successful or that it could not assemble a transaction. Those phrases alone do not identify the fault. Read the complete error and find the nested msg value, which may identify the failing Docker network, missing package, or failed chaincode build.
The reports associated with this message concern older LFS272 course material, which the Linux Foundation forum marked discontinued. Commands and deployment procedures can differ in newer Hyperledger Fabric releases; check the Fabric and Docker versions used by your lab before applying legacy steps.
Troubleshoot the nested error
- Capture the full message. Copy the complete error, including the nested
msgtext, rather than diagnosing from “error code 500” or “proposal response was not successful” alone. - Match the remedy to that text. Follow the relevant case below; the generic wrapper does not distinguish among them.
- Retry instantiation only after correcting the underlying fault. If the failure persists, use the peer and container logs to identify the next specific cause.
If the message says the network was not found
Compare Docker’s actual network names with the peer’s configured network mode. In a terminal, run:

docker network ls
Then inspect CORE_VM_DOCKER_HOSTCONFIG_NETWORKMODE in the Docker Compose configuration. The name must match the network Docker created, including capitalization. LFS272 reports describe a mismatch between startFiles_basic and startfiles_basic; these are distinct names. The Linux Foundation discussion identifies a mismatch between the startup-script network and the configured value as a likely cause: forum discussion.
One forum response recommends replacing CORE_VM_DOCKER_HOSTCONFIG_NETWORKMODE=${COMPOSE_PROJECT_NAME}_basic with CORE_VM_DOCKER_HOSTCONFIG_NETWORKMODE=startfiles_basic. Treat that as a fix for the reported setup, not a universal value: use the exact network name shown by your own Docker Compose project and docker network ls. See the Linux Foundation guidance.

After correcting the Compose setting, tear down and recreate or restart the Fabric network and peer containers so they receive the updated configuration. Then retry instantiation.
If it says it cannot get the chaincode package
This means the expected chaincode package is not available on the peer. Check that the package name and version match the deployment, and install the package on every peer involved before instantiating. In one LFS272 report, the missing step was:

That command reflects the package name, path, and version in that report; use the values required by your lab rather than copying them blindly. The original poster identified the omitted installation step in the discussion.

If registration, container startup, or the Docker build fails
Messages such as chaincode registration failed, container exited, or a Docker build error point to the chaincode launch or build path. Inspect peer and container logs for the underlying failure. A stale dev-* image may preserve a bad build; remove stale development images when appropriate, then run the chaincode or build directly to expose dependency or source errors. Do not assume that a generic transaction error is necessarily a Docker configuration issue. One Lab 4 report exposed ordinary Go syntax errors in the nested Docker build output. Correct the source or dependency error shown in the logs, then retry the lifecycle operation. See the Stack Overflow report.

Version and course caveat
The incident reports date from 2019 to 2021 and involve older LFS272 material. They establish examples of causes, not a universal fix for every Fabric release or lab environment. Before changing Compose settings or following legacy chaincode commands, confirm the versions and deployment procedure used by your course.
