Kyndryl’s argument is that enterprise cloud work is shifting from straightforward migrations to harder choices about where each workload belongs. In a February 24, 2025 sponsored CIO BrandPost, Kyndryl recommends evaluating application and data requirements across public cloud, private cloud, hybrid or multicloud environments, and traditional IT—not assuming one cloud fits everything. Its claims about VMware scale and platform capabilities are Kyndryl’s own, not independently verified market rankings or third-party evaluations.
Why Kyndryl says enterprise cloud work is changing
The BrandPost, written by Ken Phillips and featuring David Simpson, Kyndryl’s senior vice president of Cloud Practice growth, describes a move beyond relatively straightforward “lift-and-shift” migrations. As organizations address later waves of workloads, they must make more specific decisions about placement, data, and operational needs.
Simpson says: “As customers have come to look at deeply integrated and expansive workloads, most have come to realize that using one cloud is not an option.” That is Kyndryl’s view of enterprise requirements, not a universal rule established by independent market research. Some organizations may have workloads that suit a single environment; the article’s point is that expansive, integrated estates can call for more than one.
How to decide where a workload belongs
Kyndryl’s recommendation is to choose a platform workload by workload. Simpson puts it this way: “We recommend they look at the characteristics of the workload, the data requirements, and determine the best platform for each workload across a public, private, and traditional IT landscape.”
For a practical assessment, consider these dimensions together rather than selecting a cloud model first and forcing every application into it:

- Your Personal Streaming Server - Build your own Netflix-style media library and stream 4K movies, shows and photos to any device without monthly fees
- Create Your Own Cloud - Store your entire photo, video and music collection; access from anywhere with fast 282 MB/s transfer speeds

- Multi-Layered Data Protection - Combine RAID redundancy, automated backups and snapshot technology to prevent data loss from any cause
- Smart Home Surveillance - Support up to 30 IP cameras with AI detection, instant alerts and secure remote monitoring
- Workload and application requirements: Consider how integrated or expansive the application is, what capabilities it needs, and whether it is mission-critical.
- Data and privacy: Identify data-control requirements, privacy constraints, and whether an organization is comfortable placing the workload and its data in a public-cloud environment.
- Sovereignty and geography: Determine where data must reside and which geographic or regulatory constraints affect placement.
- Performance and latency: Evaluate whether response times, proximity to users or equipment, or other performance needs favor a local or on-premises environment.
- Platform fit: Compare the capabilities and limitations of hyperscaler, niche, and industry-specific clouds with the needs of the particular workload.
- Operating context: Decide whether public cloud, private cloud, a hybrid or multicloud arrangement, or traditional IT best fits the workload’s requirements.
These considerations come from the sponsored article’s framing; it does not provide a scoring model or independently compare named cloud providers.
Where private cloud and on-premises systems may fit
The BrandPost argues that local infrastructure can remain relevant for edge use cases, high-performance computing, virtual desktop infrastructure, and core systems such as customer relationship management (CRM), enterprise resource planning (ERP), and business intelligence. It connects private-cloud interest with data control and AI workloads that some organizations may not want exposed to the public internet.
That is a rationale for evaluating private or on-premises options—not evidence that those options are automatically safer, faster, or less expensive. The appropriate choice depends on the workload, data obligations, performance needs, and available platform capabilities.

What Kyndryl says it offers
The sponsored article groups Kyndryl’s cloud portfolio into four areas: cloud consulting, public cloud, private cloud, and modern operations. It also refers to managed cloud services and Kyndryl Consult. These are descriptions of the company’s offerings in the article, not independent assessments of service quality or results.
The piece also describes Kyndryl Bridge as an AI-powered open-integration platform for observing, integrating, and orchestrating an organization’s technology environment. That characterization is a vendor statement; the article does not provide third-party testing of the platform’s capabilities.
What the VMware claims establish—and what they do not
Kyndryl says it has worked with VMware for many years, accumulated “many thousands” of VMware certifications, and oversees more VMware assets than any other provider. It also identifies itself as a Broadcom Pinnacle Partner and discusses VMware Cloud Foundation alongside Kyndryl Bridge.

The claim that Kyndryl manages more VMware assets than any other provider is not independently substantiated in the CIO BrandPost. Treat it as Kyndryl’s comparative claim, not as a confirmed industry ranking. The article likewise does not independently verify the scale implied by its certification statement or test the described VMware Cloud Foundation and Kyndryl Bridge capabilities.

Simpson cites an IDC figure that “more than half” of data and infrastructure is outside the data center. The BrandPost does not identify the IDC report, its publication year, definitions, or methodology. Without those details, the figure should not be treated as a verified current IDC statistic.
