Spoilers for the Lanterns season-one finale below.
Kyle Chandler says the final goodbye he shared with Aaron Pierre in Lanterns moved him to tears. In an HBO panel reported by Tom’s Guide on October 5, 2026, Chandler recalled watching Pierre in the scene: “I had to gently wipe away a tear.” Pierre, meanwhile, called the chance to play John Stewart a gift and described hearing from people who said the show had moved them.
What happens in the Lanterns finale?
Tom’s Guide’s October 5, 2026, account says the finale reveals who killed Hal Jordan, answers whether another Manhunter is present, and ends with John Stewart taking the Green Lantern ring and accepting the role of Earth’s protector. Those developments set up the farewell between Chandler’s Hal and Pierre’s John; the report describes the scene, but the actors’ comments offer the clearest account of what it meant to them.

Why did Kyle Chandler say he wiped away a tear?
Chandler said the final scene with Pierre affected him while he watched it. Tom’s Guide reports that he tried to keep his reaction from his wife and quotes him saying, “I had to gently wipe away a tear.” He also described the moment as a goodbye.
In separate post-finale press-conference coverage, Reactor reports that Chandler saw the scene as the emotional culmination of Halogram’s experiences with John. The same report quotes Chandler explaining that Hal and Halogram “were never fully separated; he [Halogram] is his [Hal’s] subconscious. So there’s a lot to play with there.” In that reading, Halogram’s bond with John also connects to Hal’s own history.

What did Aaron Pierre say about playing John Stewart?
Pierre described the role as unusually meaningful to him. “To call this opportunity to play John Stewart a gift would be a massive understatement,” he said, according to Tom’s Guide. He added: “If I could choose to play any superhero, it would be John Stewart.”
He also recalled people approaching him and telling him the show had moved them and that they were eager for the next episode. His description was personal anecdote, not a measurement of the show’s audience response: “And people from every walk of life have told me that this, that and the third have moved me, and I can’t wait for the next episode.”

What did the actors say about the time between filming and release?
Tom’s Guide reports that the actors had not seen the finished episodes until the season premiere, even though production had wrapped nearly a year and a half earlier. That timing meant Chandler’s emotional response came from seeing the completed final scene, rather than from revisiting a finished episode throughout production.
What would Chandler and Pierre do with a Green Lantern ring?
The panel also asked the actors what they would do if they had a Green Lantern ring for 24 hours. Tom’s Guide reports that Pierre was stumped. Chandler imagined creating a construct that would make people acting to do harm fade from view.
