KYC stands for “Know Your Customer.” It commonly refers to the identity checks a financial institution or other covered business performs on a customer. The term is also used more broadly for customer due diligence (CDD), which can include checking beneficial owners, understanding why a customer is establishing a relationship, and monitoring activity over time. The exact requirements depend on the jurisdiction, industry, and assessed risk.
What does KYC mean?
Know Your Customer (KYC) is a process for identifying and verifying a customer and understanding the risks associated with serving them. In everyday use, KYC often means the identity-verification step during onboarding. In some contexts, it refers to the wider set of due-diligence checks and ongoing monitoring.
HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) describes customer due diligence as sometimes being referred to as KYC and treats CDD as the collective term for required checks on customers and, where applicable, beneficial owners. Its guidance applies to supervised businesses in the UK, not as a universal rule: HMRC’s customer due diligence guidance.
How KYC relates to CDD, AML, and KYB
These terms are related but not interchangeable. CDD—customer due diligence—usually describes the broader checks an organization uses to understand a customer and the relationship. AML means anti-money laundering: the wider set of controls intended to prevent and detect money laundering. CDD is one part of an AML framework. Some businesses use KYB, or “Know Your Business,” for due diligence on business customers. Terminology varies, and some organizations use KYC to mean the broader process as well as identity checks.

What can a KYC or CDD process include?
The checks depend on applicable rules and the circumstances. A process may include:
- Identifying a customer and verifying their identity using documents, data, or other reliable evidence.
- Identifying a business’s beneficial owners—the people who ultimately own or control it—and taking reasonable steps to verify them.
- Understanding the purpose and intended nature of a business relationship or transaction.
- Considering source of funds or wealth where appropriate to the relationship and risk.
- Verifying the identity and authority of a person acting for a customer, when required.
- Monitoring an ongoing relationship and reviewing whether transactions fit what the organization knows about the customer and their risk profile.
- Keeping records and updating information when circumstances change.
Not every organization checks every item in every case. The applicable legal framework and risk assessment determine which measures are appropriate. HMRC summarizes UK CDD components and ongoing monitoring in its economic crime supervision handbook.

Why organizations perform KYC checks
Financial institutions and other covered businesses use KYC and CDD to understand who they serve, assess money-laundering and terrorist-financing risks, and identify activity that may warrant scrutiny. Information gathered through due diligence can also support compliance and, where applicable, later investigations. The Bank for International Settlements notes the importance of transaction monitoring in bank due diligence in its AML and CFT in banking overview.
Why checks differ by customer and risk
KYC is not necessarily one fixed checklist. Many frameworks take a risk-based approach: lower-risk circumstances may permit simplified due diligence, while higher-risk cases can call for enhanced checks and closer scrutiny. HMRC’s UK guidance gives politically exposed persons and certain transactions connected to FATF Call for Action countries as examples requiring enhanced treatment under its rules. Those examples should not be treated as a complete or worldwide list.

The Financial Action Task Force (FATF) emphasizes proportionate safeguards. Its 2025 financial-inclusion guidance warns that overly cautious AML/CFT measures can unintentionally exclude legitimate consumers and businesses from regulated services. A risk-based process aims to address financial-crime risks without treating every customer as equally risky.
What documents might be required?
There is no universal KYC document list. Depending on the jurisdiction, sector, customer type, and verification method, an organization might ask an individual for a passport or another form of identity evidence. A business may need to provide official corporate information or details about its ownership and control. The organization’s instructions and applicable local rules determine what it accepts; an example from one country is not a guarantee that the same document will work elsewhere.

When must KYC be completed?
Timing depends on the applicable rules. As a UK example, HMRC says identity verification generally must be completed before establishing a business relationship or carrying out a transaction when CDD is required. Its guidance describes a narrow exception for certain low-risk relationships, where verification must be completed as soon as practicable. This is UK-specific guidance, not a global timing rule.

What KYC means for an individual customer
If a bank, payment provider, or other covered business asks you to complete KYC, it is seeking enough information to identify you and meet its due-diligence obligations. Depending on the service and risk, it may also ask about the purpose of the account or transaction, or request further information later. Follow the organization’s stated requirements and use its official channels to submit documents; do not assume that a request, document list, or deadline applies to every provider or country.
