The Linux Foundation and the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF) announced the release of the Kubernetes and Cloud Native Essentials course (LFS250) and general availability of the Kubernetes and Cloud Native Associate (KCNA) certification on November 18, 2021. The announcement describes what each offering covered at launch; it does not establish their current availability, prices, or exam requirements.

What LFS250 and KCNA were

LFS250 was an introductory online training course, while KCNA was a multiple-choice, entry-level certification exam. The course was intended to prepare learners for the exam, but completing it was not described as a requirement to take KCNA.

Offering What it was Purpose described at launch
LFS250: Kubernetes and Cloud Native Essentials Online introductory training Introduce cloud-native technologies and container orchestration, including high-level Kubernetes architecture and application delivery and monitoring in distributed environments.
KCNA: Kubernetes and Cloud Native Associate Multiple-choice certification exam Assess entry-level knowledge of Kubernetes and the broader cloud-native ecosystem.

The November 18, 2021 CNCF and Linux Foundation announcement aimed the course at developers, administrators, architects, and managers who were new to cloud-native technology and orchestration.

What LFS250 covered

The launch announcement described an overview rather than an advanced, hands-on specialization. Its topics included:

  • Cloud-native concepts and container orchestration.
  • High-level Kubernetes architecture and the challenges of orchestration.
  • How orchestration differs from legacy environments.
  • Delivering and monitoring applications in distributed environments.

The announcement named Timo Heinrichs of inovex as the course developer. It did not establish current course access, price, language, or regional availability.

What the KCNA exam covered in the 2021 announcement

The launch blueprint divided the exam into five weighted domains. These percentages describe the November 2021 announcement, not a verified current blueprint.

Domain 2021 weight Examples listed in the announcement
Kubernetes Fundamentals 46% Resources, architecture, APIs, containers, and scheduling.
Container Orchestration 22% Orchestration fundamentals, runtime, security, networking, service mesh, and storage.
Cloud Native Architecture 16% Architecture fundamentals, autoscaling, serverless, community and governance, personas, and open standards.
Cloud Native Observability 8% Telemetry and observability, Prometheus, and cost management.
Cloud Native Application Delivery 8% Application delivery fundamentals, GitOps, and CI/CD.

The announcement also cited examples such as basic application deployment with kubectl; Kubernetes concepts including containers, pods, nodes, and clusters; cloud-native topics such as storage, networking, GitOps, and service mesh; and security principles. For current exam scope and policies, consult the official KCNA certification page rather than relying on this historical blueprint.

Who the course and certification were for

LFS250 suited learners seeking a guided introduction

The course description was aimed at people entering cloud-native work, including both technical roles and managers who needed a grounding in the terminology and core concepts. It could be a fit for someone who wanted a structured overview before deciding whether to pursue an exam.

KCNA suited learners demonstrating foundational knowledge

The exam was presented as an entry-level credential for knowledge spanning Kubernetes and the wider cloud-native ecosystem. The announcement positioned KCNA as a possible step toward other CNCF credentials, naming CKA, CKAD, and CKS. It did not say that KCNA was a prerequisite for any of them.

Launch prices and availability were time-limited facts

At launch, the announcement listed regular prices of $250 for the standalone exam, $99 for LFS250, and $299 for the course-and-exam bundle. A temporary promotion offered them for $125, $50, and $105 respectively, with discounts ending November 28, 2021. These are historical U.S.-dollar figures from that announcement, not current prices or offers.

The announcement said KCNA was generally available for enrollment and scheduling and that LFS250 had been released as an online course. Those statements refer to November 18, 2021; the sources available here do not confirm present-day enrollment, exam terms, or course availability. Verify current details with the official provider before planning a purchase or exam.

What the launch announcement says about demand

CNCF Ecosystem Advocate Katie Gamanji reported that more than 100,000 Kubernetes certification registrations had occurred to date and that all 400 KCNA beta slots were claimed within an hour during the October 2021 KubeCon + CloudNativeCon North America launch. Those are figures reported in 2021, not current totals or evidence of career outcomes. The announcement also said the exam was developed with Certiverse, whose platform enabled 15 subject matter experts to create test content asynchronously.

The Kubernetes project repeated the general-availability announcement in its December 7, 2021 release post. That post is historical corroboration, not confirmation of current availability.
