KrakenD did not disappear: its Community and Enterprise gateway editions continued as assembled products, with Lura serving as the underlying framework.
What happened to KrakenD after it joined the Linux Foundation?
The Linux Foundation announced Lura as a hosted project on 11 May 2021. The donation covered KrakenD’s core framework and engine—not the entire KrakenD product line. KrakenD described Lura as a library of components for building custom gateways for cloud-native or on-premises deployments. The Foundation characterized Lura as a stateless, distributed, high-performance API gateway intended to enable microservices adoption.
The organizational change was about stewardship: the engine gained a neutral, open-governance home. KrakenD’s team initially formed Lura’s Technical Steering Committee, according to KrakenD’s announcement. The move did not mean that KrakenD’s assembled Community and Enterprise editions were renamed or discontinued.
Is KrakenD the same as Lura?
They are closely related, but not interchangeable names. Lura is the open-source engine/framework that originated as KrakenD’s core. KrakenD Community and KrakenD Enterprise are assembled gateway editions built around that engine, with product-level packaging and capabilities. KrakenD’s current product information continues to distinguish the editions from the Lura engine.

In practical terms, a developer can work with Lura as a framework for assembling a gateway, while a team deploying KrakenD uses an edition of the assembled product. Lura’s declarative configuration describes how endpoints aggregate and transform responses from underlying services, allowing a gateway to present a consolidated API rather than requiring clients to call each microservice separately. The engine is designed to be stateless and distributed, which supports deployment across multiple instances without relying on a single gateway process to hold session state. See the KrakenD Community Edition repository for project details.
Is KrakenD still open source?
Yes, the Community Edition remains free, self-hosted, open source, and licensed under Apache 2.0, according to KrakenD’s current product pages. Lura is also an open-source project under Linux Foundation hosting. Enterprise is a separate commercial edition; consult KrakenD’s current product and licensing information for its terms and features.

KrakenD reported 1.8 million online servers in a month in its 2021 announcement. Its GitHub organization profile, accessed in 2026, describes approximately two million servers running KrakenD monthly around the world. These are vendor-reported figures from different dates, not independently audited market-share measurements, and should not be treated as a directly comparable growth series.
What is the difference between KrakenD Community and Enterprise?
Community is the open-source, self-hosted edition. Enterprise is KrakenD’s commercial edition. The available source material establishes that distinction but does not provide a complete, current feature-by-feature matrix, so specific Enterprise-only capabilities should be confirmed in KrakenD’s current documentation rather than inferred.

Will KrakenD plugins still work?
Not indefinitely for every edition. In a June 2026 update, KrakenD said Community Edition and Lura will no longer support Go plugins starting with version 3.0. This is a significant compatibility change for deployments that extend the gateway with Go plugins. Check the release documentation for the exact version availability and migration instructions before upgrading; the stated policy does not establish a removal date for Enterprise.
Teams affected should inventory plugin usage, identify whether each customization can be replaced by built-in configuration or another supported extension approach, and test the replacement against the gateway’s aggregation and transformation behavior. Do not assume an existing Go plugin will remain usable after moving to Community Edition or Lura 3.0.
What the Foundation move means for gateway users
Lura’s foundation-hosted governance is distinct from KrakenD’s product stewardship: the engine sits in an open-governance project, while KrakenD continues to offer assembled Community and Enterprise editions. For organizations evaluating an API gateway, the practical questions are whether declarative aggregation fits their API design, whether a stateless distributed operating model suits their infrastructure, which licensing and support model they need, and whether the Go-plugin policy affects their extension strategy.
