Gary Wingrove began a four-year term as KPMG International’s Global Chairman and CEO on 1 October 2026, succeeding Bill Thomas. His central task is to make a large, independent network work more cohesively—while turning its AI and digital ambitions into trusted services and demonstrating that integrity commitments are matched by effective action.
Who is KPMG’s new CEO?
Wingrove leads KPMG International, the coordinating body for a global network of member firms. He is not the chief executive of every member firm. KPMG’s 18 March 2026 appointment announcement described the organization as having more than 276,000 people worldwide; that is the company’s reported figure, not an independently audited staff count.
Wingrove brings experience from both global and national leadership. He served as KPMG International’s Global Chief Operating Officer, with responsibilities that included global integration, regional clustering, aligning investment, alliances, growing the delivery network, digital transformation, and AI-enabled solutions. He also led KPMG Australia from 2013 to 2021.
In announcing his appointment, Wingrove said he wanted to bring clients “agility, deep expertise and AI-enabled solutions” to help them navigate complexity, manage risk, and seize opportunities. That is a statement of intent, not evidence that those outcomes have already been delivered.

Why is coordinating KPMG’s global network difficult?
KPMG’s scale gives it access to expertise across countries and service lines, but the network is not a single, centrally run firm. Member firms operate with their own responsibilities, while KPMG International sets global direction. KPMG says its Global Management Team develops strategy and drives alignment among member firms, functions, and sectors under the Global Board.
That arrangement creates a persistent leadership tension: global coordination can support consistent priorities and shared investment, but member firms need room to respond to local markets, regulation, and client needs. A contemporaneous article on Wingrove’s appointment, citing James Ransome, also highlighted the balance between cooperation and independence. That is attributed analysis, not KPMG’s own official description.

Wingrove’s former COO remit makes integration and execution natural tests of his leadership. The question is whether he can turn global strategy into practical collaboration without treating local autonomy as an obstacle or allowing network-wide priorities to fragment.
Can KPMG turn AI investment into useful, trusted services?
AI and digital transformation are part of the work Wingrove oversaw as Global COO, and AI-enabled services feature in his stated priorities for clients. The challenge now is not just to adopt new tools. KPMG must make them useful in real client work, manage risks around data and reliability, and ensure its people have the skills and guidance to use them appropriately.

KPMG’s 2025 Global CEO Outlook offers broad context for the changing leadership environment: 59 percent of surveyed CEOs said expectations and complexity had evolved significantly over the previous five years. This is a survey result about CEOs generally, not a measurement of KPMG employees or Wingrove’s performance.
How will KPMG address governance and client trust?
Trust is consequential for a professional-services network whose work depends on clients sharing sensitive information and relying on its judgment. The challenge is to make ethical standards and investigation procedures credible in practice, including when questions arise within an individual member firm.

A case at KPMG Australia illustrates why precise distinctions matter. A parliamentary committee release recounted allegations raised by Senator Deborah O’Neill. KPMG Australia later said that, based on evidence identified to that point, the allegations had not been substantiated. Separately, the firm acknowledged inappropriate sharing of a client document. Those are different claims and should not be collapsed into a single finding.
In a later update, KPMG Australia said its whistleblower handling and investigations had fallen short of its expectations, citing shortcomings in management, investigative rigour, and leadership action. Its May statements also described investigations as continuing at that time. They do not establish the investigations’ status on 7 October 2026, and a member-firm matter is not a finding about every KPMG firm.

For Wingrove, the broader leadership test is whether the network can demonstrate that concerns are handled rigorously, accountability is clear, and remediation is reviewable. Public commitments matter, but clients and other stakeholders will also look for evidence that corrective action works and confidence is being restored.

Wingrove’s background makes global execution a plausible priority, but it does not establish that the challenges are solved. Progress can be judged by looking for evidence in three areas:
- Coordination and autonomy: Do shared strategies and investments lead to better alignment across the network while leaving member firms able to meet local needs?
- AI and delivery: Are AI-enabled services producing clear client value under effective governance, with staff prepared to use them responsibly?
- Integrity and remediation: Do public commitments translate into independently reviewable improvements in handling concerns and rebuilding client confidence?
These tests reflect the scale of the role: Wingrove must lead a global network through shared priorities, not simply announce them.
