If you are bringing Java habits into Kotlin, start with the official Kotlin Coding Conventions, then review what a Java-to-Kotlin conversion leaves implicit: reassignment, collection mutability, nullability, and the API Java callers will see. Consistent formatting helps a team read and maintain code; Kotlin-specific choices make intent clearer without requiring you to rewrite every familiar Java pattern.
What formatting rules should Java developers adopt first?
Kotlin’s official Coding conventions provide the baseline. The document says: “Use four spaces for indentation. Do not use tabs.” It also recommends Java-style brace placement, spaces around binary operators, and omitting semicolons whenever possible.
- Put an opening brace at the end of the construct line; align its closing brace with the construct.
- Use four spaces, never tabs, for indentation.
- Leave spaces around binary operators, and omit semicolons unless a specific situation calls for one.
- Place Kotlin files in directories that follow their package structure. In mixed JVM projects, keep Kotlin files in the Java source roots and package directory structure.
Brace placement is not just visual: Kotlin uses line breaks in syntax, so unusual formatting can affect how code is parsed. For class members, use a logical order rather than alphabetizing: properties and initializer blocks, secondary constructors, methods, then the companion object. Group related members and keep overloads together.
Apply the style in IntelliJ IDEA or Android Studio
The Kotlin conventions page describes loading the Kotlin style guide in IntelliJ IDEA and Android Studio and enabling formatting inspections. IDE labels can vary by version, so use the IDE’s settings search for “code style” or “inspections” if the exact menu wording differs. The useful outcome is that the IDE can format to the selected Kotlin style and flag formatting that diverges from it.

How should Kotlin express values and API intent?
Choose val by default, var by intent
Use val when a local variable or property is not reassigned; use var when reassignment is intentional. This makes mutation visible to someone reading the declaration. It does not make an object referenced by a val deeply immutable: the object may still expose mutable state.
Declare collection mutability in the contract
When callers should not mutate a collection through an API, expose read-only interfaces such as List, Set, and Map rather than declaring a mutable implementation type for a read-only purpose. Kotlin’s read-only collection interfaces prevent mutation through that reference; they do not guarantee that no other reference can change the underlying collection. Kotlin collection operations can make transformations concise, but a chain is not automatically clearer than named intermediate values. Prefer the form that makes the transformation and mutation contract easiest for your team to follow.
Use properties for simple reads, extensions for receiver-centered operations
A property is often a better fit than a no-argument function when reading the value is cheap, stable while the relevant state is unchanged, and non-throwing. Keep a function when the operation is costly, has meaningful work or side effects, or can fail in a way callers should recognize.

An extension function can express an operation that primarily works on a receiver without changing that receiver’s class. Keep extensions as narrowly visible as practical: widely visible extensions can make the available API harder to discover and may create naming conflicts.
Make public library declarations explicit
For library code, the conventions recommend explicitly stating public member visibility, function return types, and property types. Document public members with KDoc when they add a contract; overrides that add no new contract do not need duplicative documentation.

Which Java patterns have useful Kotlin alternatives?
Kotlin’s official idioms show alternatives that can reduce routine boilerplate. Treat these as options, not mechanical rewrite rules.

Build strings according to the job
Use templates for ordinary interpolation. For incremental construction, the Kotlin strings documentation recommends buildString, which uses a StringBuilder internally. For multiline strings, trimIndent() and trimMargin() can normalize indentation; choose one when the source indentation should not become part of the resulting text.

What must be checked after Java-to-Kotlin conversion?
The Java-to-Kotlin interop documentation and Kotlin’s Java-project learning material are useful context: the converter can handle boilerplate, but converted code may need manual tweaking. A conversion that compiles is not necessarily the clearest Kotlin or the right Java-facing API.
- Nullability: Check which values may actually be null and whether the converted declarations express that accurately.
- Mutation: Look for unnecessary
vardeclarations and collection types that promise more mutability than callers need. - Language fit: Consider whether a value-oriented type, default parameter, property, extension, or collection operation better communicates intent. Keep the converted structure when changing it would not improve clarity or compatibility.
- API shape: Review visibility, generic types, property accessors, and overloads for their effect on Java callers.
- Behavior: Verify that the conversion preserves the program’s behavior; style improvements do not substitute for correctness checks.
Inspect Java-facing signatures in mixed projects
Kotlin properties map to Java accessors, so Java callers may see getter or setter methods rather than Kotlin’s property syntax. Visibility and generic types also affect the Java-facing API. If Java code is part of the contract, inspect the generated signatures and test representative Java call sites instead of assuming a Kotlin declaration has a one-to-one Java form.
How should a team choose between alternatives?
The conventions are a consistency baseline, not an official ranking of every possible Kotlin style. When code offers more than one reasonable form, evaluate it against the project’s needs:

For teams maintaining both languages, agreeing on the same formatting baseline and reviewing Kotlin-specific semantics is more useful than treating conversion as a one-click cleanup.
