What changes when you add a KontrolFreek?
A taller stick moves the point where your thumb rests farther from the stick’s pivot. Your thumb therefore travels through a larger arc for a given stick movement, which may make small aiming or camera adjustments feel less abrupt to some players. KontrolFreek describes that added travel as a way to make adjustments feel more controlled, but this is the manufacturer’s explanation of its design—not proof of a universal accuracy improvement.
The company also says its Performance Thumbsticks reduce the force needed to move in and out of a controller’s dead zone. That is a stated mechanism and comfort claim; the sources available do not establish it as an independently measured result.
Grip and surface area change too. The added texture may help if your thumb slips on a stock stick. For a lower-profile option, KontrolFreek’s separate No-Slip Thumb Grips are intended to add traction with minimal height and a feel closer to the original stick.

A TechRadar Gaming reviewer described precise movement as “definitely a little easier” after getting used to the added height, while noting that the attachments would not fix bad aim. That is one reviewer’s personal experience, not a controlled comparison.
Which setup might suit your game?
KontrolFreek’s recommendations are starting points based on how different games use the sticks, not results from a head-to-head trial. The left stick commonly handles movement; the right commonly handles aiming or camera control.

The company suggests lower- or mid-rise options. Consider whether you prioritize quick movement, camera control, or a familiar overall feel rather than assuming that more height is always better.

Fighting games and platformers
For games built around quick directional inputs, KontrolFreek suggests low-rise options and minimal resistance. A taller stick may not match the fast, direct movements you prefer.
Hand size, thumb placement, controller, in-game sensitivity, and comfort all affect which height feels right. A suggested setup is a place to start, not a prescription.

How to adjust after switching
- Choose one setup and keep it consistent. Changing stick height and other settings at the same time makes it harder to tell what feels different.
- Practice in a low-pressure mode. Give your thumb time to adjust before judging the feel in a competitive match.
- Change sensitivity in small steps if needed. Avoid making a large adjustment just to compensate for a new sensation.
- Reassess comfort and control. If the added height continues to feel awkward, try a lower-rise setup or return to stock sticks.

Fit can depend on the exact controller and on details such as stick width and edge shape, removable caps, height, material, attachment system, and manufacturing tolerances. Will a KontrolFreek fix stick drift?
No. A Performance Thumbstick sits over the existing analog stick; it does not repair or replace the stick module. GamesRadar’s PS5 accessory guide likewise describes grips that attach over the DualSense sticks and are not a fix for drift. If your controller drifts, an added grip or extender does not address that underlying problem.
Is the change worth trying?
Consider a KontrolFreek if you want extra height or grip and are willing to spend time adapting to a different feel. Stock sticks remain a sensible choice if their height and your muscle memory already suit you, or if you prefer familiar, quick inputs.
