KIT says the research supercomputer has more than 42,000 processor cores and 300 AI accelerators, with around 33 petaFLOPS of planned peak performance. User operations had already begun in stages, with the first phase starting August 10.
What HoreKa 2 is—and when it became available
HoreKa 2 is KIT’s new high-performance computing facility, intended to support researchers at KIT and elsewhere in Germany. It succeeds the original HoreKa, which entered operation in 2021. KIT put the total cost of the new facility at €17 million in its September 25, 2026 commissioning announcement.
The dates mark different milestones: NHR@KIT says the first phase of user operations began August 10, 2026; the September 25 event was the ceremonial commissioning. The distinction matters because the system was brought online progressively rather than made available in its entirety at once.
How powerful is HoreKa 2?
KIT reports more than 42,000 processor cores and 300 AI accelerators. Its planned peak performance is around 33 petaFLOPS—roughly 33 quadrillion floating-point operations per second at peak, not a measure of the speed a particular research job will achieve. KIT presents this as a planned specification, not an independently measured benchmark.

Martin Frank, a member of the KIT Scientific Computing Center’s directorate, said the new system would “double the computing power for simulations and AI applications.” That is KIT’s stated comparison; the official announcements do not provide benchmark methods or an external validation, nor a complete component-by-component comparison with the predecessor.
How the rollout is being phased
The first partition made available for user operations was Onyx, a CPU partition. NHR@KIT described additional GPU resources and specialist nodes for data- and memory-intensive applications as resources to follow. Its account identifies the Jade GPU partition as featuring NVIDIA Blackwell technology. These rollout details are in NHR@KIT’s HoreKa 2 update, last changed August 12, 2026.

- Revell Model Kit #85-5810, Skill Level 4, Contains 66-Parts, Recommended for ages 12 and up
- Accurate surface details
- Includes GTD-21 surveillance drone with cart
- Decals with authentic U.S. Air Force markings
- Molded in black and clear. Paint and glue required(not included).
Consequently, the August start date should not be read as confirmation that every partition, specialist node, or the system’s eventual capacity was already available to users. The official materials describe stages but do not give a full component inventory or a like-for-like performance result against HoreKa.
What researchers will use it for
KIT names climate research, materials science, particle physics, energy, mobility, and artificial intelligence among the fields HoreKa 2 is intended to serve. Large datasets and complex simulations can help researchers build more detailed models and investigate materials and sustainable technologies. The facility’s stated remit is research computing, rather than a consumer-facing service.

Petra Olschowski, Baden-Württemberg’s Minister of Science, Research and the Arts, said, “If you want to stay ahead in research and innovation, you need optimum computing power.” KIT Vice President for Digitalization and Sustainability Kora Kristof said HoreKa 2 “strengthens the digital capabilities of KIT and combines cutting-edge research with a clear focus on sustainability.”
Cooling, energy, and what KIT’s claims establish
KIT says performance and energy efficiency were given equal priority in development and procurement. The system uses hot-water cooling; KIT says that approach supports efficient operation and year-round free cooling. NHR@KIT says the computing components are cooled almost entirely with hot water and that waste heat can be used for heating.

- Centerline and inner wing pylons as well as tail assembly feature polycaps to allow easy detachment for storage.
KIT also says electricity at Campus North is 100 percent based on renewable energy, with cogeneration and photovoltaic facilities contributing to the site’s sustainable supply. KIT describes HoreKa 2 as among the most energy-efficient systems in its performance class worldwide, but the cited official materials do not provide an independent comparative study. These statements describe KIT’s and NHR@KIT’s account of the facility, not a third-party efficiency ranking.

The core count, accelerator count, planned peak performance, and €17 million facility cost are figures reported by KIT in its commissioning release. The available official sources do not include an independent benchmark specific to HoreKa 2. Peak performance is therefore useful as a headline specification, but it does not establish real-world application speed, relative rank among supercomputers, or a direct performance gain over the original HoreKa.
