The Kioxia CD9P is an enterprise and data-center NVMe SSD family with a maximum capacity of 61.44 TB in one specific 2.5-inch CD9P-R model. It uses a PCIe 5.0 x4 interface and Kioxia BiCS FLASH generation 8 TLC NAND, but the maximum-capacity drive is read-intensive—not the mixed-use CD9P-V—and its specifications do not make it a plug-in consumer desktop upgrade.
What is the Kioxia CD9P SSD?
CD9P is Kioxia’s data-center SSD family, designed for enterprise server and storage workloads. The family uses PCIe Gen5 x4 and NVMe 2.0 and is based on BiCS FLASH generation 8. Kioxia’s data sheet describes both 2.5-inch drives, 15 mm thick, and E3.S drives, 7.5 mm thick, alongside power-loss protection and security or encryption options. These are drive specifications; they do not establish compatibility with a particular server or storage system.
The “up to 61TB” headline refers to 61.44 TB, the capacity listed for the 2.5-inch CD9P-R model KCD9XPUG61T4 (SIE) and its SED counterpart KCD9DPUG61T4. It is not the capacity of every CD9P model or form factor. Kioxia’s current Data Center SSD datasheet, revision 9.0, lists the family specifications and model numbers; the copy cited here was checked in 2026.
CD9P-R and CD9P-V are different drive variants
The R and V designations identify different workload classes. The 61.44 TB maximum belongs to the read-intensive CD9P-R lineup. The CD9P-V is a mixed-use E3.S variant with a smaller listed capacity range and a different endurance rating.
#1 Best Overall
| Variant | Workload class | Form factor and capacity | Endurance | Published family performance figures |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| CD9P-R | Read-intensive | 2.5-inch lineup includes a 61.44 TB model; CD9P family data sheet also lists E3.S options | 1 DWPD for the 61.44 TB model | Kioxia lists up to 2,600K random-read IOPS and 450K random-write IOPS across specified models |
| CD9P-V | Mixed-use | E3.S; 1.6 TB through 12.8 TB on Kioxia’s product page | 3 DWPD on the listed E3.S page | Kioxia lists up to 2,600K random-read IOPS and 750K random-write IOPS |
DWPD means drive writes per day: the rated number of full-drive capacity writes per day over the specified warranty period. It is an endurance rating, not a forecast of how long a drive will last under every workload. The ratings above apply to the cited model or product page, not indiscriminately to the whole CD9P family.
Kioxia presents the CD9P-R for scale-out and cloud applications, and names hyperscale, IoT and big-data analytics, online transaction processing, streaming media and content delivery networks, and virtualized environments as target uses. Those are manufacturer-stated application examples, not independent workload test results. See Kioxia’s CD9P-R Series product page and CD9P-V Series product page for their respective specifications.

What the 61.44 TB model’s performance figures say
For the 61.44 TB CD9P-R model, Kioxia’s revision 9.0 data sheet lists maximum sequential read speed of 13,500 MB/s and sequential write speed of 7,000 MB/s. It also lists up to 1,200K 4 KiB random-read IOPS and 100K random-write IOPS for this model. These are Kioxia’s specifications, not results from an independent benchmark.
Do not substitute family-level peaks for this model’s figures. Kioxia’s CD9P-R page lists up to 2,600K random-read IOPS and 450K random-write IOPS across specified R models, while the 61.44 TB model’s data-sheet figures are lower. The CD9P-V page gives a separate mixed-use family maximum for random writes. A product comparison should use the exact model’s row and workload conditions rather than combining the largest numbers shown for different drives.

What PCIe 5.0 and BiCS 8 mean
PCIe 5.0 x4 and NVMe 2.0
PCIe 5.0 is the drive’s host interface generation, and x4 indicates a four-lane connection. NVMe 2.0 is the storage protocol used over that interface. Together, these identify the CD9P as a high-speed server-class NVMe drive; they do not by themselves guarantee a particular application’s speed. Actual results depend on the complete system, workload, and configuration.
BiCS FLASH generation 8 TLC
BiCS FLASH is Kioxia’s 3D NAND flash technology. The CD9P uses eighth-generation TLC NAND in the higher-capacity variants. In its June 20, 2025 announcement, Kioxia described CBA as “CMOS directly Bonded to Array” and attributed improvements in performance, efficiency, and storage density to the architecture. Those statements describe Kioxia’s technology and claims, not independent validation.

Kioxia compared the 15.36 TB CD9P with its previous generation and reported maximum improvements of 125% in random-write performance, 30% in random read, 20% in sequential read, and 25% in sequential write. It also reported performance-per-watt improvements of approximately 60% for sequential read, 45% for sequential write, 55% for random read, and 100% (2x) for random write. These are the company’s comparisons for that 15.36 TB model—not measured results for the 61.44 TB SKU. The announcement identified its product highlights as preliminary and subject to change. - Dimension: 22mm x 30mm x 2.38mm / Key Type: M Key
- Size: Fits 2230 as is / Compatibility: Laptop & Desktop Compatible
- Bulk Packaging - Only the Drive is included. Any screws, cables, or adapter needed are sold separately
- Warranty: 2-Year Oemgenuine Warranty
- Workload and endurance: Decide whether the read-intensive R or mixed-use V profile fits the expected write workload, then check the DWPD rating for the exact model.
- Physical fit: Confirm support for the specific carrier and form factor—2.5-inch at 15 mm or E3.S at 7.5 mm—and for the chosen model’s dimensions.
- Interface and firmware qualification: Check PCIe 5.0 x4, NVMe support, and the platform vendor’s list of qualified drives. The published drive specifications do not confirm compatibility with a named server.
- Power and cooling: Validate the system’s power budget, airflow, and thermal limits for the drive and its intended workload.
- Security requirements: Confirm whether the required model is SIE or SED and whether the platform supports the relevant security features.
- Model-specific performance: Compare the exact SKU’s sequential and random read/write specifications; family maxima may belong to other capacities or workload variants.
