Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFor reading with minimal setup, choose a Kindle; for building and customizing an e-reader, choose a Raspberry Pi project. They are not equivalent products: a Kindle is a finished commercial device, while a Pi e-reader is a build whose display, controls, software, and portability depend on the parts and design you choose.
Which one fits your project?
| What matters most | Better fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Start reading with little setup | Kindle | It is an integrated device; choose a model and configure it. |
| Learn, experiment, or write software | Raspberry Pi e-reader | You assemble the hardware and can adapt the software and controls. |
| Pick an unusual screen or form factor | Raspberry Pi e-reader | The builder selects the panel and compatible driver. |
| Use Amazon’s reading and document-transfer ecosystem | Kindle | Features and workflows vary by Kindle model and generation. |
| Repurpose an older Kindle | It depends | A Raspberry Pi can serve a web page for a Kindle to display, but compatibility with a particular Kindle must be checked. |
What building a Pi e-reader involves
A Raspberry Pi alone is not an e-reader. A typical design needs a computer, storage, power, an e-paper display, and a compatible driver or controller. A portable version also needs a battery and charging plan; physical buttons and battery monitoring are possible additions. The exact parts depend on the panel and software.
One documented build
The maintainers of the DIY E-Ink Reader project describe a build using a Raspberry Pi Zero W, a 7.5-inch, 800×480 e-paper display and a Seengreat driver board. Its parts list includes a single-cell 1500 mAh LiPo battery, charging board, battery monitor, tactile buttons, and microSD card. The project reports TXT, PDF, and EPUB support. Those are specifications and software features of that particular build, not guarantees for other Pi readers; its wiring and driver settings are tied to the listed hardware.
Other display approaches
Raspberry Pi’s guide to using E Ink displays with a Raspberry Pi describes standalone add-on displays as well as a network-page approach that uses a Kindle. The 2018 guide discusses products including the PaPiRus HAT and Inky pHAT; treat these as examples from that article, not as confirmation of current stock or compatibility. Check the chosen display’s supported Pi boards, controller, interface, and driver library before buying.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
A separate 2018 project describes a simpler setup of a Raspberry Pi, e-ink display, microSD card with a Linux-based operating system, power cable, and source code. It displays user-defined text and changes pages with keyboard keys, illustrating how software and controls differ from a turnkey reader. See the Raspberry Pi e-ink project.
What E Ink does—and does not—settle
Alex Bate wrote in Raspberry Pi’s 19 June 2018 article that “E Ink displays are relatively cheap, light, and interesting to look at,” in addition to their low power consumption and persistent image. That is a broad observation, not a measured guarantee for every panel. E Ink’s image can remain visible without continuous power, but a Pi build still needs power to run its computer and other electronics; the overall runtime depends on the design and use.

What a current Kindle offers
Amazon’s device identification page, accessed 4 October 2026, lists the basic Kindle (2026 release) with a 6-inch, 300 ppi glare-free E Ink display, USB-C charging, and 16 GB internal storage, of which approximately 10.8 GB is available to the user. Amazon states “up to 6 weeks” of battery life for that model; this is a manufacturer maximum, not a comparative test. The page also lists other Kindle models and generations, so these specifications should not be applied to the entire Kindle range. See Amazon’s Kindle identification guide.
A Pi display’s size, resolution, color, and refresh behavior are determined by the selected panel and controller. The cited materials do not provide a controlled, comparable test of Kindle and Pi-reader cost, battery runtime, refresh speed, or reading comfort. A parts list or manufacturer maximum alone cannot establish which option is cheaper, lasts longer, or feels better to read on.

Books and file transfer
Kindle
Amazon UK’s Send to Kindle support page lists PDF, DOC, DOCX, TXT, RTF, HTM, HTML, PNG, GIF, JPG, JPEG, BMP, and EPUB files, up to 200 MB each. Amazon recommends its wireless service. The page’s USB instructions are workflow- and region-specific: for its documented Mac workflow, Kindle Scribe and Kindle devices released in 2024 require an additional application for USB transfers, while earlier models other than Scribe do not. Check the steps for your device and computer rather than assuming one USB procedure applies to every Kindle. See Amazon UK’s file-transfer guidance.
File behavior can also depend on book layout. Amazon KDP’s format comparison explains that reflowable books can support adjustable fonts and accessibility features, while some fixed-layout formats have limitations such as no user font settings or reduced screen-reader support. This publishing-format guidance is not a universal specification for every personal file transferred to a Kindle.

Raspberry Pi
Supported book formats depend on the reader software installed and configured for the build. The DIY E-Ink Reader project reports TXT, PDF, and EPUB support, but that does not mean every Pi e-reader supports those formats out of the box. Confirm the software’s formats and display behavior before settling on a hardware design.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can you use a Kindle as a Raspberry Pi screen?
Raspberry Pi’s 2018 guide describes connecting a Kindle and Raspberry Pi to the same network, then serving a web page for the Kindle to display. The guide’s author writes: “by connecting your Kindle to the same network as your Raspberry Pi, you can create a web page accessible to the e-reader to display data to your E Ink screen.” This is a way to repurpose a Kindle for displaying a page, not evidence that every model works as a general-purpose external monitor. Check the specific Kindle’s browser and network behavior against what the project needs.

Choose by the job, not by an assumed price advantage
- Choose a Kindle if your priority is a packaged reader and Amazon’s supported reading and transfer features, and you do not want to assemble or maintain hardware.
- Choose a Pi build if the construction is part of the goal: you want to learn, select a particular display, add custom controls, or combine reading with a programming project.
- Consider the network-page approach if you already own a Kindle and want to display information from a Pi. Verify compatibility with that device before designing around it.
Do not assume a Pi reader will cost less or run longer than a Kindle: the cited sources do not establish a comparable bill of materials or measured runtime. A Pi build makes most sense when customization and the work of building are benefits in their own right.
