To stretch a Kindle’s charge, turn on Airplane Mode when you do not need wireless connectivity. For a more comfortable page, adjust brightness, text size and spacing to suit your room and reading preferences. Exact settings and menu paths depend on your Kindle model and generation, so check the device before following steps.
Find your Kindle model before changing settings
Kindle menus and display features vary by model and generation. Amazon’s Kindle guide index lists guides for individual devices, including the Paperwhite 12th Generation and the 2024 Kindle 11th Generation. If a path below does not match your screen, check your model in Settings or Device Info and use its specific guide.
Use Airplane Mode when you do not need wireless
Wireless activity is the clearest setting to change when conserving charge. Amazon notes that a weak wireless signal can increase power consumption, though its guide does not quantify how much battery Airplane Mode saves.
On the Paperwhite 12th Generation, swipe down from the top of the screen to open Quick Actions, then tap Airplane Mode. This turns off wireless connectivity; on this model, it also disables Bluetooth. Downloads and updates that require a connection wait until wireless is switched back on.

Turn Airplane Mode off when you want to sync, download books, receive updates, or use Bluetooth. On other Kindle generations, controls and Bluetooth behavior may differ, so check the model’s guide.
Set brightness and warmth for your surroundings
On the Paperwhite 12th Generation, open Quick Actions to adjust brightness and warmth. You can also go to All Settings > Screen and brightness > Brightness and Warmth. A practical approach is to use the lowest brightness that remains comfortable in the current lighting; this is a personal adjustment, not a guaranteed battery-life figure.

On supported models, warmth changes the tone of the display. The Paperwhite 12th Generation guide documents two warmth schedules: Automatic, from sunset to sunrise, or Manual, with times you choose. Warmth controls and scheduling are not available on every Kindle.
Some supported models also offer Dark Mode, which inverts display colors. Treat it as a viewing preference: it is not established as a universal way to extend battery life or improve eye health.

Adjust text size and page layout while reading
You can personalize the page without changing screen lighting. While a book is open, tap the top of the screen and open Page Display or Font & Page Settings (the label can vary). Depending on the Kindle, controls include:
- Font family, size, and boldness
- Line spacing and margins
- Page orientation
Choose settings that make the text easy for you to follow; there is no single ideal font size or spacing for every reader. Older models may use different menu names.

Choose whether Kindle refreshes every page
Kindle’s default page-turn behavior minimizes refreshes. If you prefer a refresh on every turn, the Paperwhite path is Quick Actions > All Settings > Reading Options > Page Refresh; turn the option on to refresh each page. The guide does not quantify a battery tradeoff for this preference, so choose based on how you prefer pages to display rather than an assumed charge saving.

Amazon’s guides show why one set of steps cannot be applied to every Kindle. For example, the Paperwhite 12th Generation guide includes warmth controls and scheduling, while the 2024 basic Kindle guide documents brightness and page refresh without showing the same warmth controls. The Oasis guide has its own model-specific options, including night brightness reduction.
