Choose a GPS watch if your child mainly needs to call or message a trusted circle and share their location; choose a smartphone if they need broader apps and communication and an adult can manage the extra controls. Neither is automatically safer or right for every child. Your choice should also account for the child’s readiness, the caregiver’s devices, carrier compatibility, and your family’s privacy expectations.
How do a smartphone and GPS watch differ?
| Decision | Smartphone | GPS watch |
|---|---|---|
| Communication | Offers broader app and communication options, so caregivers should review contacts, chats, content, and purchase controls. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) recommends checking these settings: FTC guidance on talking with children about online safety. | Some models focus on calls or messages with parent-managed contacts. Features differ by product. Apple describes calls and messages to approved contacts through Apple Watch For Your Kids; Gabb lists calling and messaging on its Watch 3e. |
| Apps and distractions | More apps and content mean more decisions about screen time, downloads, purchases, and filters. The FTC recommends reviewing these controls. | A watch may offer a more limited experience, but verify which apps and contacts the specific model supports rather than assuming all watches work alike. |
| Location | Location features and sharing depend on device and app settings. Review permissions and who can see the child’s location. | Some models offer location and safe-zone features. Update timing and service terms vary. Gabb says its Watch 3e updates GPS location approximately every 15 minutes; that is a manufacturer-stated figure for that product, not a general watch specification. |
| Setup and compatibility | Depends on the phone’s operating system and the parental controls you choose. The FTC discusses Apple Family Sharing, Google Family Link, and Microsoft Family Safety as examples of family-control tools: FTC advice on screen-time limits and parental controls. | Requirements vary by model. Apple Watch For Your Kids requires a GPS + Cellular Apple Watch, a parent’s iPhone, and eligible carrier service. Check local carrier support and the selected model before buying. |
| Privacy | Review the handset’s settings and each app’s information collection and sharing practices. | Review the watch’s companion app and service privacy notices, too. Location and contact data are sensitive regardless of device type. |
When is a GPS watch the better fit?
Consider a watch when the immediate need is reachability and location, your child is not ready for a general-purpose smartphone, and the available contacts and service arrangement suit your family. A watch can provide communication without giving a child a conventional smartphone, but features are model-specific: Apple describes calls, messages, approved contacts, and location sharing through Apple Watch For Your Kids, while Gabb lists calling, messaging, GPS, safe zones, and parent-managed contacts for its Watch 3e.
For Apple’s setup, the caregiver needs an iPhone and the watch must be a GPS + Cellular model. Phone-number and communication availability depend on cellular coverage and eligible carrier service. Check the current requirements for your location and plan in Apple’s cellular and Apple Watch information.
When does a smartphone make more sense?
Choose a smartphone when your child has a concrete need for broader apps or communication and a caregiver can set up and revisit the controls. The added flexibility brings more choices to manage: the FTC recommends reviewing privacy and security settings, screen-time limits, app downloads and purchases, content filters, contact and chat settings, and family monitoring tools.

What parental controls should you check?

How should a family set location-sharing rules?
Treat location sharing as a family agreement, not a guarantee of safety. The FTC recommends discussing when sharing makes sense, limiting access by app, and telling children not to broadcast their location broadly or continuously. Decide who may check the map and in what situations, and explain that a location feature is only one communication aid.

The FTC says the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) applies to operators of commercial websites and online services—including mobile apps and Internet of Things (IoT) devices—directed to children under 13 that collect, use, or disclose personal information. It can also apply to general-audience services that have actual knowledge they are collecting information from children under 13.

For covered services, FTC guidance describes obligations that include a privacy policy, direct notice to parents, verifiable parental consent with limited exceptions, and parental rights to access or delete a child’s information. The FTC describes COPPA’s purpose this way: “The primary goal of COPPA is to place parents in control over what information is collected from their young children online.” Read the FTC’s COPPA compliance FAQ. These legal obligations do not certify a particular watch or app as private or secure.
In April 2018, FTC staff warned Gator Group and Tinitell that their services might violate COPPA in connection with children’s devices and geolocation information. That is a historical example, not evidence of a current violation or a judgment about today’s products: FTC staff’s 2018 warning.
