When a keyboard “doesn’t work” in Chrome, the first job is to work out which part has failed. Typed characters, navigation keys such as Tab and the arrows, and shortcuts such as Ctrl+C (Cmd+C on a Mac) can each fail for different reasons, and the scope of the failure (one field, one site, all of Chrome, or other apps too) matters even more. The checks below run from the least disruptive to the most disruptive. Each one tells you what it can and cannot confirm.

Identify what is failing before you change anything

Use the table to match what you are seeing with where to look first. The scope is the most useful clue: a failure confined to one field points to the page, while a failure in other applications points away from Chrome altogether.

What you see What it usually suggests Where to look first
Typing fails in one text box only The field does not have focus, or the page is handling input unusually Check 2 below
Typing or arrows fail on one website only A site-level issue, or an extension interacting with that page Checks 2 and 5
Shortcuts such as Ctrl+C or Ctrl+T fail in Chrome Shortcut handling by the operating system, the browser, the page, or an extension Checks 1 and 5
Keys fail across all Chrome pages but work in other apps A Chrome-wide problem, such as a browser setting, an extension, or a damaged update Checks 4 to 7
Keys fail in other applications as well The keyboard, its connection, its layout, or the operating system Check 3, then the operating system’s keyboard settings

Seven checks, ordered by disruption

The sequence below is a diagnostic order we have assembled from Google’s general Chrome troubleshooting guidance and Chromium’s keyboard documentation. Google does not publish a keyboard-specific seven-step guide, so where a step is an inference rather than an instruction from Google, the text says so.

Check 1: Pin down the failure

Decide which of three things is broken: text entry, navigation (Tab, arrows, Enter in forms), or shortcuts. Try each one in the address bar and then on a plain web page. Writing down the result takes less time than changing settings blindly, and it tells you which later checks are worth running. Chromium’s keyboard design documentation notes that operating-system shortcuts, browser shortcuts, page handling, and extensions can all act on the same key press, which is why a shortcut may fail while typing works.

  • FULL-SIZED CONVENIENCE: The standard QWERTY layout of this keyboard set offers a familiar typing experience, ideal for both professional tasks and personal use.

Check 2: Check the page and focus

  1. Click inside the exact field you want to type in. Keyboard input goes only to the element that has focus.
  2. Type in the address bar. If that works, the browser is receiving input and the problem is confined to the page.
  3. Open a different website and try a text box there.

If only one page or one field fails, the evidence points away from a general keyboard failure. This is a practical inference from how focus works, not a finding from a Google article.

Check 3: Test the keyboard in another application

Open Notepad on Windows or TextEdit on macOS and type a few lines. If keys fail there too, Chrome is not the cause. Look at the physical connection first: reseat a wired keyboard, or re-pair a wireless one. Then check the keyboard layout. On Windows, go to Settings > Time & language > Language & region. On macOS, go to System Settings > Keyboard > Input Sources. A layout that differs from the printed keys can look exactly like a broken keyboard.

Check 4: Restart Chrome

Google’s general guidance for Chrome problems includes closing and reopening the browser. Close every Chrome window, confirm Chrome has fully quit (on Windows, check the system tray; on macOS, use Cmd+Q), then open it again. A restart clears temporary input states that can linger in a running session.

Check 5: Test extensions

Google’s general troubleshooting guidance recommends disabling extensions and then re-enabling them one at a time to find the cause. Google gives this advice for connection and loading problems, so treat it as an isolation test rather than a guaranteed keyboard fix.

  • The keyboard for business and office working is the budget-friendly keyboard that is built for longer use
  • Low profile keys for a more comfortable and quiet keystroke, desktop-centric design, splash resistant
  1. Open chrome://extensions in the address bar, or select the three-dot menu, then Extensions > Manage extensions.
  2. Turn off every extension and test the keyboard again.
  3. If the keyboard works, turn extensions back on one at a time, testing after each, until the failure returns. The last extension you enabled is the likely cause.

Shortcut-heavy extensions, and web apps that capture keys themselves, are the most likely culprits, because they intercept key events before the browser acts on them.

Check 6: Update Chrome and restart

Google recommends running the latest version of Chrome. Open the three-dot menu and select Settings > About Chrome. If an update is available, install it, then restart Chrome manually. If no update is available, the restart still matters, because an update can be downloaded but not applied until the browser has been relaunched.

  • Hardware acceleration. Google documents turning it off as a fix for Chrome crashes and failure to open, followed by a restart. It does not present it as a keyboard fix. Recent desktop versions list it under Settings > System as “Use graphics acceleration when available.” Menu labels change between releases, so search the Settings page if the label differs. A 2019 Chrome Help Community thread about Chrome 73 on Windows 10 described keyboard shortcuts that worked inconsistently, and some replies suggested this setting. Those replies are user reports, not verified official fixes, so do not treat this setting as a proven or lasting cure.
  • Reset settings. Use this only after the other checks have failed. In recent versions, go to Settings > Reset and clean up > Restore settings to their original defaults. Google says bookmarks and saved passwords are not deleted or changed. Extensions and themes are changed, so note which ones you use before you reset. Google’s reset documentation lists fonts and accessibility settings among the settings that stay in place. A reset is not a full browser reset, so it does not remove your browsing data.

Why shortcut failures often come from outside Chrome

Chromium’s keyboard-shortcut design guidance states: “Web Platform & Extension Conflicts: Shortcuts intercept key events before or after web pages, potentially breaking user workflows in web productivity apps (Google Docs, Sheets, VS Code Web, Figma) and extensions.” That is a developer-facing description, not troubleshooting advice, but it explains the pattern readers see. A shortcut that works on a plain page and fails inside a document editor is usually being claimed by the web app, while a shortcut that fails everywhere in Chrome is more likely claimed by the operating system, a browser setting, or an extension.

What the sources do and do not establish

Google’s Chrome Help documentation, checked as of October 2026, supports restarting, updating, isolating extensions, and resetting settings for general Chrome problems. Those articles cover crashes, failures to open, connection and loading issues, and resets. They do not describe the keyboard symptom itself, and they do not provide a keyboard-specific sequence. Because the Chrome version, operating system, affected keys, and symptom scope are unknown to us, no single cause can be confirmed from this article. Follow the menu labels for your own platform, since they differ between Windows, macOS, Linux, and ChromeOS.

Decision guide after the checks

  • Only one field or one site fails: the problem sits with that page. Check whether the site has its own keyboard-capturing feature, and test with extensions disabled.
  • Shortcuts fail in Chrome but typing works: look for conflicts with operating-system shortcuts and with extensions (Check 5) before changing browser settings.
  • Chrome-wide failure, but other apps work: restart, update, and test extensions first. Use the hardware acceleration toggle and then the reset only if those fail.
  • Failure in every application: stop troubleshooting Chrome. Recheck the connection, the keyboard layout, and the operating system’s keyboard and accessibility settings, and test the keyboard on a second computer if you have one.
