Neither KEEN nor Merrell is a universal winner. For a useful comparison, start with two specific waterproof mid-height boots: the KEEN Targhee III Waterproof Mid and the Merrell Moab 3 Mid Waterproof. Choose between them by trying the exact versions on your feet and matching them to your terrain, weather, and hike length—not by assuming every boot from either brand fits or performs alike.

KEEN vs. Merrell hiking boots: the quick comparison

The Targhee III and Moab 3 are both waterproof mid-height hiking boots, but their published specifications do not establish which is more comfortable, durable, or grippy in real conditions. The most useful distinction in the available product information is fit language: KEEN says the Targhee III has generous forefoot room for toes to splay; Merrell describes the Moab 3 footbed as contouring to the foot, without a directly comparable toe-box measurement.

Decision point KEEN Targhee III Waterproof Mid Merrell Moab 3 Mid Waterproof
Fit information KEEN says its Original Fit offers generous forefoot space for toe splay. Merrell describes a footbed that contours to the foot; the cited listing gives no comparable toe-box measurement.
Waterproofing KEEN.DRY waterproof, breathable membrane; the product page also describes PFAS-free water repellency. Waterproof membrane designed to keep water out while allowing moisture to escape.
Outsole and lugs KEEN.ALL-TERRAIN rubber outsole; 4 mm multi-directional lugs. Vibram TC5+ outsole; 5 mm lugs.
Published men’s weight 526 g (18.55 oz) per shoe. 495 g per half pair.
Warranty evidence KEEN publishes a one-year North American warranty for qualifying defects in original materials and workmanship, subject to terms. Warranty terms were not established in the cited material.

These are manufacturer-published details for particular listings, not the results of a controlled head-to-head test. In particular, the listed weights use different measurement bases, and lug depth alone cannot predict traction across different surfaces.

Which boot should you try first?

Start with the Targhee III if forefoot room is a priority

KEEN describes the Targhee III’s Original Fit as providing generous space across the forefoot for toes to splay. That makes it a sensible try-on candidate if you often feel cramped across the front of a boot. It is not an independent fit assessment or a promise that the boot will suit your foot: try it with the hiking socks you plan to wear and check that your heel feels secure.

The cited men’s Targhee III Waterproof Mid listing identifies style 1017786 and specifies a 5.31-inch (135 mm) shaft, a 12 mm heel-to-toe drop, and 4 mm multi-directional lugs. Those details apply to that listing, not every Targhee model or size.

Include the Moab 3 if you want to assess its listed outsole and footbed

The men’s Moab 3 Mid Waterproof listing describes a molded nylon arch shank, Merrell Air Cushion, Super Rebound Compound midsole, and Vibram TC5+ outsole with 5 mm lugs. Merrell also lists a waterproof membrane, a pig suede leather and breathable mesh upper, a bellows tongue, and protective rubber heel and toe caps. These features identify the boot; they do not prove that it will fit your arch better or grip better for you.

Merrell reports 11.5 mm of drop and a weight of 495 g per half pair for the cited men’s listing. Its women’s listing gives a different weight basis—410 g per shoe—so do not compare those figures without aligning gender version, size, and measurement basis.

Waterproof or ventilated: match the boot to your climate

Both comparison models have waterproof membranes, making them candidates for wet, muddy, or cool outings. Waterproof construction alone does not settle comfort in hot weather. For frequent hot, dry hikes, consider ventilated or non-waterproof footwear too: KEEN’s hiking guide points to a Targhee Vent option. The cited Merrell material does not establish a directly matched hot-weather alternative, so compare current options rather than treating the two waterproof boots as the entire range.

How to compare fit and traction in practice

  1. Try the exact versions. Compare the same height and waterproof status where possible, and note the gender/fit version and generation. Brand-wide labels do not guarantee a consistent fit across models.
  2. Wear your hiking socks. Check toe room while standing and walking, heel movement, and pressure across the forefoot. A roomy description is only a starting point; your foot decides whether the boot works.
  3. Test the intended use. If the retailer permits it, walk on a surface resembling your usual trail. Consider tread pattern, rubber compound, wear, and conditions alongside lug depth; the 4 mm and 5 mm figures are not a traction ranking.
  4. Confirm the listing before buying. Check model generation, height, waterproof status, and size-specific product details. KEEN’s Targhee IV, for example, is a distinct newer construction: its cited product page describes a waterproof hiking shoe with glue-free KEEN.FUSION construction, Luftcell cushioning, and a KEEN.RUGGED outsole. Do not transfer Targhee III specifications to it.
  5. Review the terms that apply to your purchase. Warranty coverage can depend on region and conditions, and retailer terms may differ. Check the current manufacturer policy for your location rather than assuming one brand offers better coverage.

What the available evidence can—and cannot—tell you

The specifications above come from manufacturer product pages and policy information; they are useful for narrowing a try-on, not for declaring a brand winner. The available material does not establish independent lab results, controlled head-to-head hiking performance, or long-term durability comparisons. Comfort and performance also depend on foot shape, socks, sizing, pack weight, terrain, climate, and how the boots are used.

For warranty context, KEEN’s North American policy says qualifying footwear defects in original materials and workmanship are covered for one year from the original purchase date, subject to conditions, exclusions, and proof-of-purchase requirements. It does not make a claim about ordinary wear or fit and comfort. Merrell’s warranty terms were not verified in the cited material, so the evidence does not support naming a warranty winner.
