KDE released Plasma 6.5.6 on 10 March 2026 as a bug-fix update containing two months of contributor fixes and translations. It was the final bug-fix release for the Plasma 6.5 series—not the end of Plasma development or the latest Plasma release. Package availability depended on each Linux distribution.
What changed in KDE Plasma 6.5.6?
KDE described 6.5.6 as a maintenance release rather than a feature update. Its release announcement says it included two months of fixes and translations. The complete changelog lists work across Discover, KScreen, KWin, Plasma Desktop, Plasma Workspace, Spectacle, and other components.
Examples from the changelog
- KWin: fixes cover color and night-light handling, DRM framebuffer cleanup, screencasting after a GPU reset, output positioning, and hardware cursor support.
- Plasma Desktop: changes address task-manager input and focus behavior when configuring panels.
- Plasma Workspace: listed fixes include zero-size system dialogs, dangling device-notification references, and notification-selector placement.
- Spectacle: a fix restores remembering the Save As location.
These are examples of changes in the changelog, not a guarantee that every user will notice a difference. KDE’s release materials do not quantify a performance improvement, adoption rate, or total of resolved user-visible bugs.
Was Plasma 6.5.6 the last update in the 6.5 series?
Yes. In a release-team email dated 10 March 2026, KDE contributor Bhushan Shah wrote, “This is last bugfix release for Plasma 6.5 series”. The word “final” therefore applies to bug-fix releases in the 6.5 series. KDE’s announcements index lists Plasma releases after March 2026, so 6.5.6 should not be described as the current Plasma version.

How to get Plasma 6.5.6
For most users, the practical route is through their Linux distribution’s software repositories. KDE said distributions had created or were preparing packages, and warned that packages might not be available everywhere when it announced the release. Check your distribution’s repositories and release channel for its current package status and upgrade instructions; delivery timing is distribution-specific.
KDE also published the source code and GPG signatures. Its source-information page identifies Bhushan Shah as the signer of the source archives and Git tags. Building from source is a separate route from installing a distribution package.

How to try Plasma without upgrading an installed system
KDE recommends trying a live image booted from a USB disk as the easiest option, and also links to Plasma Docker images. A live-image session lets you test Plasma temporarily rather than replacing the desktop on your installed system. The USB drive is only the boot medium; you still need to obtain the live image and follow its instructions. Docker is another test option, but it is distinct from installing Plasma as your system desktop.
