KDE Frameworks 6.12.0 was released on 14 March 2025. It is a collection of updates to KDE libraries and developer tools—not a standalone application or a sweeping redesign. Its changes include broader image metadata support, Kirigami accessibility and layout fixes, KIO search and navigation updates, and new commands and fixes in KTextEditor. KDE’s announcements index lists later releases, including 6.30.0 on 9 September 2026, so 6.12.0 is a historical version rather than the latest release.

What is KDE Frameworks 6.12.0?

KDE Frameworks is a set of libraries and supporting tools used by KDE software and other applications. Version 6.12.0 updates individual components in that set; what a user notices depends on which applications integrate those components and when those applications adopt the release. The version announcement is therefore a framework-level change list, not a promise that every KDE application received every change at once.

KDE described Frameworks releases as planned monthly updates intended to deliver improvements to developers on a predictable schedule. The 6.12.0 announcement is chiefly a record of incremental enhancements and maintenance across multiple modules.

What changed in KDE Frameworks 6.12?

Image formats and metadata

KImageFormats gained metadata support for several formats: resolution and EXIF/XMP metadata for HEIF, XMP/EXIF metadata for AVIF, and EXIF metadata plus rotation support for JXR. KDE also lists a pixel limit and fixes to image-format handling. These are library-level capabilities; whether they are exposed to you depends on the application using KImageFormats.

Kirigami pages, dialogs, and accessibility

Kirigami added a PageStack attached property and accessibility names for mnemonics. The release also fixes width and height binding loops in pages and dialogs, which can help avoid layout problems in applications built with the library.

KIO search and navigation

KIO added Fedora Packages search, KDE icons in web shortcuts, and a background for the URL navigator. The change list also includes fixes for local-host URLs and previews of empty files.

KTextEditor commands and fixes

Applications integrating KTextEditor may expose a “Copy as HTML” context-menu command and a Vim-style gc motion for toggling comments. KDE also lists navigation, tooltip, and scrolling fixes. These are framework changes, not a guarantee that every text editor or IDE using KTextEditor adopted them in its next update.

Build tools, archives, calendars, and metadata extraction

  • Extra CMake Modules: Android APK build support changes include generating a Gradle version include file and work to meet Google Play version-code constraints.
  • KArchive: The release includes archive error-handling and default-naming changes.
  • KCalendarCore: A recurrence fix addresses missing or invalid periods.
  • KFileMetaData: Changes include extractor metadata warnings and a dump utility that is built even when tests are disabled.

How to get KDE Frameworks 6.12.0

Linux users: check your distribution’s packages

KDE recommends that Linux users install Frameworks through packages supplied by their distribution. Package versions and availability vary by distribution and release, so check your distro’s package information to see whether it offers 6.12.0. If it does not, that does not mean the framework is unavailable everywhere; it means your distribution has not made that version available through the package source you checked.

Building from source

For a source build of Frameworks 6.12.0, KDE specifies Qt 6.5.0 as a requirement and provides source downloads and compilation instructions. KDE recommends kdesrc-build for people contributing to Frameworks or tracking development across the set of libraries. This route gives developers more control over the source version and fits a contributor workflow; it is not KDE’s recommended installation route for ordinary Linux users.

KDE’s Frameworks 6.12.0 version page lists individual source tarballs, file sizes, SHA-256 checksums, and identifies Nicolas Fella as the tarball signer. If you download a tarball to compile, compare its checksum with the value on that official page.

Is Frameworks 6.12.0 the latest release?

No. KDE’s announcements index, checked on 4 October 2026, lists Frameworks 6.30.0 dated 9 September 2026 among releases after 6.12.0. Use the KDE announcements index to check the latest published release rather than treating 6.12.0 as current.
