The July 2023 KCNA curriculum path is best treated as a study outline for the earlier five-domain exam blueprint—not as the live exam outline. CNCF’s current KCNA page lists four domains with different weights, so check the official outline before you book. The July 2023 date identifies this study path; available official sources do not verify it as the publication date of a specific curriculum revision.

How the July 2023 KCNA path differs from the current outline

The earlier CNCF blueprint divided the Kubernetes and Cloud Native Associate (KCNA) curriculum into five domains. CNCF’s current certification page instead lists four domains, with updated weights and no separate Cloud Native Observability category. The two outlines are useful for different purposes: the earlier one explains the July 2023 study path, while the current one is the reference for preparing to take the exam now.

Domain Earlier five-domain outline Current CNCF outline
Kubernetes Fundamentals 46% 44%
Container Orchestration 22% 28%
Cloud Native Architecture 16% 12%
Cloud Native Observability 8% No separate weighted domain on the current page
Cloud Native Application Delivery 8% 16%

The earlier weights are from CNCF’s prior curriculum materials and its November 2021 KCNA announcement. The current weights appear on the official KCNA certification page. Don’t combine the two sets of percentages into a single exam plan: they describe different outlines.

What the earlier five domains cover

Kubernetes Fundamentals — 46%

This was the largest area in the earlier outline. Study Kubernetes resources, architecture, the API, containers, and scheduling. Focus on understanding the role of core components and how Kubernetes represents and places workloads, rather than treating KCNA as an advanced cluster-administration qualification.

Container Orchestration — 22%

The earlier domain covered orchestration fundamentals, container runtimes, security, networking, service mesh, and storage. Connect these concepts to the problems orchestration systems address: running workloads, enabling communication, managing persistent data, and applying security principles.

Cloud Native Architecture — 16%

Topics included architecture fundamentals, autoscaling, serverless, community and governance, personas, and open standards. Be ready to distinguish these concepts and understand how they fit into the cloud-native ecosystem.

Cloud Native Observability — 8%

The earlier outline gave observability its own weighted domain. It included telemetry and observability, Prometheus, and cost management. Keep it visible when following this historical path, even though the current certification page does not list it as a separate weighted domain.

Cloud Native Application Delivery — 8%

This domain covered application-delivery fundamentals, GitOps, and CI/CD. Learn the basic purpose of these practices and how they support delivering and updating applications.

How to use this path to prepare now

  1. Check the live outline first. Open the CNCF KCNA certification page and use its four-domain weights as the basis for a current exam plan.
  2. Build a foundation in Kubernetes. Review resources, architecture, the API, containers, and scheduling. The current outline still assigns Kubernetes Fundamentals the largest share, at 44%.
  3. Give orchestration more study time than the older path suggests. The current outline assigns Container Orchestration 28%, compared with 22% in the earlier blueprint. Review runtimes, security, networking, service mesh, and storage as foundational concepts.
  4. Study application delivery and architecture against the current weights. The current outline gives Application Delivery 16% and Architecture 12%. Review GitOps and CI/CD alongside architecture topics such as autoscaling, serverless, governance, personas, and standards.
  5. Retain observability as a useful topic, but map it carefully. The earlier path includes telemetry, Prometheus, and cost management. Since the current page has no separate observability weight, check the current curriculum materials to see how related topics are represented before allocating exam-preparation time.
  6. Use CNCF’s current curriculum resources. The CNCF curriculum repository provides the current curriculum and suggested learning resources. Match your study checklist to that outline rather than assuming every older domain retains its prior weight.

This ordering is a practical recommendation based on the published domain weights and topic lists, not a guarantee about the questions on a particular exam.

What the KCNA exam is—and is not

CNCF describes KCNA as an online, proctored, multiple-choice exam. Its stated scope includes Kubernetes architecture and core resources, basic deployment with kubectl, cloud-native projects, networking, storage, GitOps, service mesh, and security principles. This makes the credential a conceptual, foundational assessment: it can help learners demonstrate familiarity with cloud-native technologies, but it should not be mistaken for proof of hands-on administrator expertise.

CNCF positions KCNA as an entry point for learners and candidates interested in cloud-native technologies and as an onramp toward credentials such as CKA, CKAD, and CKS. The 2021 launch announcement quotes Linux Foundation training and certification executive Clyde Seepersad describing KCNA as a first step toward career paths in cloud administration, engineering, application development, security, and more.

Exam fee and retake terms

As listed on the CNCF certification page accessed September 28, 2026, the exam costs $250 and includes one free retake. These terms can change; confirm the live page before registering rather than treating the fee or retake policy as permanent.
