KB5044377 is the Windows 11 Insider Preview Beta build 22635.4435, announced by Microsoft on October 25, 2024. It is based on Windows 11 version 23H2. The release adds changes to Start and taskbar jump lists and Dynamic Lighting, restores Copilot-key configuration, and lists fixes for issues including Windows Hello PIN resets, USB printers, Outlook meeting reminders, and virtual switches. Some changes were gradual rollouts for eligible Insiders rather than features available to everyone immediately.
What changed in build 22635.4435?
Microsoft divided the announcement into gradual rollouts and changes rolling out to everyone in the Beta Channel. The distinction matters: the first group was limited to Insiders who had enabled the option to receive the latest updates, and Microsoft could expand availability over time. Microsoft’s October 25, 2024 announcement describes the rollout groups.
Gradual rollout: jump lists and Dynamic Lighting
- Run jump-list items as administrator: Shift+Ctrl-clicking an item in a Start menu or taskbar jump list now launches that item as administrator, matching the existing behavior for Shift+Ctrl-clicking the app icon.
- Dynamic Lighting without a compatible device: The settings page displays a placeholder, and Brightness and Effects controls are disabled when no compatible device is connected.
- More Dynamic Lighting effect directions: Wave adds Forward, Backward, Outward, and Inward directions; Gradient adds Forward.
These are changes Microsoft identified as gradual rollouts, not guarantees that every Beta Channel device received them at once. Microsoft’s release notes list the details.
Gradual fixes
- Fixed cases where the X button on the taskbar did not close an app window.
- Fixed cases where pressing WIN plus a number did not work as expected.
- Fixed a multi-monitor issue in which the mouse could unlock from a game window after Game Bar was opened and closed.
These fixes were also listed as gradual rollouts for Insiders with the latest-updates option enabled; the announcement does not promise that they address every occurrence on every Windows configuration.

What changed for everyone in the Beta Channel?
Copilot-key configuration returns
Microsoft re-enabled the option to configure the Copilot key, with refinements. Only apps that opt into the experience can be launched with the key; Microsoft says this is intended to ensure those apps understand how the key will be used and meet security and privacy requirements. The setting is at Settings > Personalization > Text input. The announcement describes this as a change rolling out to everyone in Beta.
Other fixes listed in the announcement
- Bluetooth: Fixed a memory leak that could cause an app to stop responding.
- Product activation: Added phone numbers for several regions.
- Performance Monitor: Fixed collector sets failing to close properly in specified exception, startup, or active-set conditions.
- Driver security: Added drivers at risk of bring-your-own-vulnerable-driver (BYOVD) attacks to the Windows Kernel Vulnerable Driver Blocklist.
- Windows Hello for Business: Fixed PIN reset failure when using “I forgot my PIN.”
- USB multifunction printers: Fixed an issue where a printer connected by USB could print network-command text. The release note concerns this specific behavior, not every printer or printing problem.
- Outlook and Teams: Fixed failure to join Teams meetings from Outlook reminders.
- Mobile operators: Updated profiles for certain operators.
- Virtual switches: Fixed a vmswitch stop error under a particular setup: a virtual machine using LBFO teaming, two virtual switches, and SR-IOV enabled on one switch.
- Controller input: Fixed WebView2 apps not detecting Xbox 360 or Bluetooth controller input.
These are fixes Microsoft listed for the Beta Channel build. Their descriptions do not establish that the same problems are fixed across all Windows releases, devices, or configurations. See the complete release announcement.

What does the 23H2 and Beta Channel label mean?
Microsoft describes Beta Channel updates as based on Windows 11 version 23H2 and delivered in the Build 22635.xxxx series through an enablement package. The company also says many features use Controlled Feature Rollout: they can begin with a subset of Insiders and expand later. Preview features may change, be removed, or never ship outside Insider builds. As Microsoft put it in the announcement, “Features and experiences included in these builds may never get released as we try out different concepts and get feedback.” Read Microsoft’s Beta Channel and preview-feature context.

The announcement is a historical record of the Beta Channel flight Microsoft announced on October 25, 2024. It does not establish whether KB5044377 is available today or whether installing it is suitable for a particular PC. It should not be treated as a current-build recommendation based on these release notes alone.
